Speedo Calibration???
Venturous Randy replied to 86venturejay's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The odometer is a mechanical reading, but if you are interested, I can tell how you how to get the speedo part real close. RandyA -
Your Progressive Spring ABS Spacer Length/Fork Oil & Ride
Venturous Randy replied to GolfVenture's topic in Watering Hole
None for me worked perfect. The springs came to the top of the tubes and had slight preload with the caps screwed in. It did raise the bike a little and I did not want it any higher. If I were you, I would raise the front end, take the caps off and remove the spacer and put the caps back in. This could be done in a few minutes. To me it would be easier to start on the no preload end and add if I needed to. I also assume that you are not using any air pressure. RandyA -
I think they were Kawasakis, maybe 1000's. RandyA

At least I made post #600. RandyA

help with diagnosis, please
Venturous Randy replied to tz89's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Go to a bike shop and get four new caps and cut about a 1/4 inch off the wires and screw the caps back on. These caps have resistors in them that corrode and will kill the fire. RandyA -
Fortunately, I did not get hurt, but after loosing an eye already, I have gotten a lot more aware of how easy these things can happen. RandyA

I did not put any spacer preload on my 83 with Progressives and it worked the best for me. Any preload would have been too much for me. RandyA

It is getting that time of year when we are going to start using bungee cords and I just wanted to warn everyone to be cautious. When being stretched, they can pack a wallop if they come loose. Also, it just seems natural to pull them toward you when hooking them. These things can very quickly take out an eye or cause other injury. RandyA

Deldo model? Is that the new pink one? RandyA

Hey Tom, what is the latest on the Venture you got through me? RandyA

What do you mean you have to post pics? Yammer drug it out almost 600 posts before posting pics and he kept saying over and over that he was going to. The trick is to have some intrigue, like going 400 miles with someone else's girlfriend and dragging it out for two years, with just enough hint that something is going to happen. But, if you are going to go out with some else's girlfriend, you may want to check with your wife first. Then again, you can build a garage. RandyA

That's interesting, my first bike was a 125 Ducati Bronco. I beat the crap out of that bike. RandyA

Radar Detector - Best Choice?
Venturous Randy replied to alvald83's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yep, there have been times that it told me how miserable I was. RandyA -
Yeah, being near Atlanta is a lot cooler in the summertime. RandyA

Hey ddg1111, welcome to the site. Wow, a three year old RSTD still at the dealer? This sounds to me like linkage or something as this is not a known problem on these bikes. Please let us know what is going on. RandyA

Better get used to hot and humid. RandyA

Radar Detector - Best Choice?
Venturous Randy replied to alvald83's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I run a radar detector all the time on my bike. I have it mounted in the left vent reading thru the fairing and it works good. The reason I run a detector is not because I speed, but because radar does not read who is going fastest or slowest, it reads off the strongest bounce back signal. The problem with this is a motorcycle gives a very small bounce back compared to a car or especially a big SUV or truck. If you are going 45 in a 45 speed zone and you have a large truck going 55 a half mile behind you, the cops radar gun is going to be reading 55 and he is going to be looking at you. Years ago, I actually felt more comfortable with radar as it was usually used by city and State patrol. Now, we have deputies and even constables running radar and I feel they have very poor training and understanding on how they work. And, even with instant on, you will still have the cop shooting radar at anyone they see coming and you may still get a good warning. But, if you speed and depend on your radar detector to save you, you are going to get a ticket sooner or later. And remember, speed will get you killed quicker than about anything else. I have a Cobra 6band with lazar, but the way I have it mounted, the lazar will not work, but that is ok with me because if a cop is using lazar on you, he will know how fast YOU are going. I bought this detector at Sears several years ago for $29 on sale after the local LEO,s changed bands. I also have a rocker switch to turn it off when I want to. OK, I will get off my soapbox. Probably the luckiest one involved was the vehicle that was beside the 18 wheeler. Not sure what happened to him after the crash as it looked like he was coming toward the oncoming lane. RandyA

The order noted does not make sense to me. With reservoir fairly full, pump pedal and hold and then open bleeder. When pedal stops, close bleeder valve and repeat. Do not let pedal come up with bleeder valve open or it will suck air back in, unless he is using speed bleeders and that was not noted. Another thing you can do to fill the system a little faster is to open the bleeder and lightly hold your finger over it to act as a check valve while pumping. This is also the messiest way though. Just don't let the reservoir run dry nor have it too full when you finish for fluid heat expansion. RandyA

Not my 83. It is off only about one mph at 70 according to two different GPS's. That's a 2nd gen thing. RandyA

Just posted a local one in classifieds. RandyA

Are you sure you are running on all four cylinders? Start it up cold and let it run a minute and check the pipes and see if all are warm. You may also have stopped up pilot jets, but that usually affects low to midrange running the most. When you went thru the carbs, did you remove the block with the rubber plugs in the bottom and check those jets? You can get the carbs close enough to run by looking at how much gap you have on the throttle plates and making them similar. RandyA

The right lane was fine and the left looked ok also. With all the moving around on the SUV, he should have stayed in the right lane. He almost took out the box truck in front of him before he shot over in front of the 18 wheeler. RandyA

Neat video. I can not imagine riding one of those things on the rear wheel like that. RandyA
