  1. Yep, and I routinely use 5th at 30 mph. I also may use 2nd at about 70 mph. RandyA
  2. Tom, with all that you have been through this past year, all I can say is stay tuff and you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. RandyA
  3. I have put 130,000 miles on my 83 and have had two different transmissions in it so I feel I know it pretty well. The oil I have mostly used has been Valvoline 10-40 and have also run Amsoil for motorcycles and some Valvoline Synthetic. This past oil change I put in the Rotella and even though the gear whine has not been real noticeable in the past, I am positively convinced that the whine is even less noticeable than before. I know that this may not help the whine that is associated with the clutch basket, but it may help the straight cut gear whine that is normal in these bikes. I was also wondering if any others that went to the Rotella oil feel this way? I got this oil at O'Rilleys for about $13 a gallon. RandyA
  4. I have already filed mine and got money back. I was to get about $2,300 back, but the Veterans Admistration took $1,660 of it first. RandyA
  5. Even though the stator cover bushing is probably worn, like most of ours are, I don't think that is what he is trying to address here. He is trying to get some of the slop out of where is heel toe shifter piviots. RandyA
  6. Unhook the linkage and see what is binding. Is the peddle itself working smoothly? I have seen brake peddles that simply need some lubrication. RandyA
  7. Happy birthday Annie. Linda and I wish you the best and wish you could be here again in east Tennessee and to see how beautiful spring is. RandyA
  8. Usually if the gas gauge is intermitten, it is the connection on the sending unit being loose. Usually, if you will just tighten the connector just a little, it will fix this. You will need to remove the seat to do this. RandyA
  9. The wires are screwed into the spark plug caps if that is what you are asking. RandyA
  10. Ron, I have not heard of side stand problems on 2nd gens, but on 1st gens, if we don't keep the side stand bolt tight to the point that it has very little play, it will break the bolt. It can also bend the plates that make the slot that the side stand fits into. This is a good reminder to check you side stand and make sure it is not loose. RandyA
  11. I was getting ready to post the same thing. RandyA
  12. Probably the most common way to move the pistons back in is with a "C" clamp. You will need one big enough that you can put the push pad of the clamp up inside the piston in the center so it will push it in straight. You will need to have someplace for the brake fluid to go, either from taking the cap bolt out of the master cylinder or loosening the brake bleeder valve. This would also be a good time to bleed the whole system if it has not been done in a year or so. Edit: I may have led you astray here because when I do anything to the calipers, I split them and I have more room to get to the pistons. Not sure how much you know about your brake system, but the rear caliper and the left front are tied together and will both need to be bled. Once you have the brakes bled, make sure you have room for the brake fluid to expand when it warms up or it will cause the pads to drag to the point that it will stop the bike. Make sure that you take an 8mm box wrench with you if this happens. Also, if you do need to let a little brake fluid out, you can do this on the left front caliper, you don't have to do it on the back. RandyA
  13. I did the ground wire mod on an 86 starter that I had after my original was dragging a little. It seemed to really help the starter and it cranks over good. A couple of weeks ago, I picked up an 09 RSV starter and as I understand it, it should be a 4 brush starter. It came off a bike with 40K miles and looks very clean. I was the only bidder on ebay and got it for $29.95 plus about $13 shipping from Pinwall. I am getting ready to remove the exhaust collector on the bike and replace it with one that I cut open and repaired that rattled before. I was thinking about putting the 09 starter on the bike since I was going to have the exhaust headers off on the front. My question is; does the newer 4 brush starter also need the ground wire mod or should it be ok the way it is? RandyA
  14. I would seriously consider having a talk with the owner of the shop that charged you $1,400 to screw up your bike. In any motorcycle shop, doing a carb sync should be one of the most basic routines. This is why I do not have anything done to a bike or car at a shop. I know that I am fortunate to have tools and basic mechanical skills. My son, Lil Venturous, and my grandson all learned to work on stuff at a young age. I even do my own front end alignment on cars and get great tire wear and they don't pull on flat roads. I have also rebuilt my own automatic transmissions. RandyA
  15. Steve, good attitude, because we want you back. We wish you the best and please keep us posted. RandyA
  16. Well, it's good to hear from you George. We have some ham radio enthusiasts around here as they like to go up on the local mountain that is about 6,000 feet up and talk to the world. Oh, did not realize there was an E-4 available. RandyA
  17. When I opened this post up, I did happen to barely notice the word APPLE, but I did not associate it with Apple computers. I got so involved in your concern about him getting in trouble, that at first I thought you were going to tell us about him getting out with his buddies and they were throwing apples out of the car at people and he was caught and charged with.............. A Drive by Fruiting. RandyA
  18. Good for you. And to think, I was just ribbing you a little. RandyA
  19. Hope everyone is ok down there. RandyA
  20. Speaking of GeorgeS, it shows he was on here today, but has not posted since 8-28-11. What is with you George? RandyA
  21. Was the surging problem the rear brakes sticking? RandyA
  22. That is funny and there are a whole bunch of those. Yep, that's me. RandyA:backinmyday:
  23. Thanks for the update on Ponch. Many of us have struggled this last year and this really does put our challenges into perspective. I hope Ponch will get better and better. RandyA
  24. The video of the dissappearing dots example has been posted twice and I can not find it. I have looked at about the last 25 pages of watering hole and in the safty and video threads and still cannot find it. Not sure the best word or phrase to search. RandyA Just found it. http://www.msf-usa.org/motion.html
  25. It sounds to me like the clutch is not disengaging very well and you are having to force it from one gear to another without you being able to stop it between 1st and 2nd. Put the bike up on the center stand and with the engine off, rock the rear wheel back and forth putting slight pressure on the shifter. See if it will shift between the gears. Also, you may need to bleed your clutch if it feels mushy. Where is the clutch catching at when you let the clutch out? You are not giving us enough information to work with. You say you see the green neutral light, so I suspect there is a neutral. Just try this and let us know what it does. RandyA
