Lew, if you are talking about Yamabond between the cases, I think that is normal from the factory. I do think I remember seeing it on my engine and I am confident my engine had not been apart before. RnadyA

I need to put a rear tire on and check the tools in the bag and I would be ready to go. My 83 has 152,000 miles on and I would not hesitate to take off on it. RandyA

Wow Lew, it is amazing that you had that much metal loose in the engine without any ill effects. My biggest fear of damage would be a chunk going through the gears and causeing chipped teeth more than anything else. Good luck on the 86 trans change over as that is what I did and completed about 10 miles before I left for Vogal II with a 450 camper behind me. RandyA

Check the thread at the top. I got these several years ago and they have worked fine. RandyA http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32943&page=8

What is it?
Venturous Randy replied to venture83_98's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes, remove and plug. I did mine years ago and wish I had done it earlier. I have had one of the plugs come apart and am thinking that when ever I have the carbs off again, I will use a short piece of hose with a plug on the inside the hose. I think this would actually be stronger than the rubber caps, even heavy duty ones. RandyA -
The RSTD has a higher 5th gear than the RSV and both are higher than the 1st gen. This is one of the reasons the RSTD seems to be under powered if not revved up more. The RSTD really does need the FJR or V-Max rearend which also helps the RSV. When considering gas mileage and RPM's, if you are running in 5th gear and without changing the throttle setting while down shifting to 4th, if the bike increases in speed, then you would have to decrease the throttle to maintain the same speed. Therefore, you should get better mileage at that RPM and terrain in 4th than 5th. Conversely, if you shifted from 5th back to 4th and had to increase the throttle setting to maintain the same speed, then 5th should give you better gas mileage. As a comparison, 5th gear is as follows; RSTD is .750, RSV is .786 and 1st gen is .906. Also, 4th gear on a RSTD is .906, RSV is .960 and a 1st gen is 1.068. Therefore with the same stock rearend with a 3.30 ratio, 4th gear on a RSTD and 5th gear on a 1st gen would run the same RPM at the same speed. Keep in mind that the higher the numerical reading the lower the ratio with higher RPM's. This can get confusing when using the terms higher, lower and taller. General consensous is the example with a car. If it has a 3.30 rearend, it would be higher or taller geared than a car with a 4.11 rearend, which would be considered to be lower geared even though the numerical number is higher. The 4.11 rearend will be approximately 20% higher RPM's at the same speed as the 3.30 rearend. RandyA

Yes, you are right and they were refered to as the Venturer. I think they may have also had the same package in the 850 Tripple Special as I had one. RandyA

That came from "People of Walmart". When I get lonely, I go to that site and I feel right at home. RandyA

For the 81 what? What comes before a 1st gen? RandyA

91 Venture Royale project
Venturous Randy replied to Mike Mercury's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have had people that would almost argue about how old my 83 Venture is. One summer, I had gone up on Clingman's Knob, at the top of the Smokies. There were a lot of very expensive Harleys up there and I got to noticing that more people were stopping to look at my bike than most of the others. I got some nice compliments and it made me feel good. RandyA -
This is definitely not political, just controversial

I did not get a picture. RandyA -
I tend to disagree with you. The 3.27 gear is slightly higher that the stock 3.30 and if you go to a 3.08 gear you may have to drive with slighty more throttle to maintain the same speed and I can not imagine that the trike set up it not a lot more drag on the whole system. These engines were designed to run at a little more RPM's and you may not gain any gas milage improvement by lowering the operating RPM's. I believe your thinking is that with a taller gear, you will cover more ground with less RPM's, but you may end up using more throttle to do it. And, as far as your RPM reading on your tach, these things are pretty good but I would not bet that they are spot on. Just out of curosity, what is the difference in the height of the tires with the trike set up compared to the standard rear tire? RandyA

Wow, talk about a young looking blonde, looks like you have one. Do you know much history on the bike? Has it always been from the Arizona area? 5,400 miles in 28 years is averaging less than 200 miles per year. As far as the 2nd gear issue, I doubt that babying the trans makes much difference. For sure, shifting gentle may cause the dogs to drag more rather than a good firm shift which engages quicker. The part that wears to the point that it causes the second gear problem is a big spring that pushes against a thrust washer that was not made hard enough from Yamaha up until part way into the 1985 model. As the thrust washer wears, it reduces the amount of engagement and at some point it starts to jump. I recently changed to Rotella T oil that is made for diesel engines and believe it reduced the normal whine that comes with these engines. I wonder if it could also reduce the amount of wear on the thrust washer? My 83 now has about 152,000 miles on it and it still runs great and I can assure you that it has not been babied. Welcome to the crazy bunch here and you don't need to be shy. RandyA

Well, at least you are not brain dead, well.........at least not completely, anyway. RandyA

Yep, and I routinely use 5th at 30 mph. I also may use 2nd at about 70 mph. RandyA

Tom, with all that you have been through this past year, all I can say is stay tuff and you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. RandyA

I have put 130,000 miles on my 83 and have had two different transmissions in it so I feel I know it pretty well. The oil I have mostly used has been Valvoline 10-40 and have also run Amsoil for motorcycles and some Valvoline Synthetic. This past oil change I put in the Rotella and even though the gear whine has not been real noticeable in the past, I am positively convinced that the whine is even less noticeable than before. I know that this may not help the whine that is associated with the clutch basket, but it may help the straight cut gear whine that is normal in these bikes. I was also wondering if any others that went to the Rotella oil feel this way? I got this oil at O'Rilleys for about $13 a gallon. RandyA

I have already filed mine and got money back. I was to get about $2,300 back, but the Veterans Admistration took $1,660 of it first. RandyA

Heel toe shifter is loose
Venturous Randy replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Even though the stator cover bushing is probably worn, like most of ours are, I don't think that is what he is trying to address here. He is trying to get some of the slop out of where is heel toe shifter piviots. RandyA -
Unhook the linkage and see what is binding. Is the peddle itself working smoothly? I have seen brake peddles that simply need some lubrication. RandyA

Happy birthday Annie. Linda and I wish you the best and wish you could be here again in east Tennessee and to see how beautiful spring is. RandyA

Warning Light
Venturous Randy replied to lwinders's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Usually if the gas gauge is intermitten, it is the connection on the sending unit being loose. Usually, if you will just tighten the connector just a little, it will fix this. You will need to remove the seat to do this. RandyA -
Ron, I have not heard of side stand problems on 2nd gens, but on 1st gens, if we don't keep the side stand bolt tight to the point that it has very little play, it will break the bolt. It can also bend the plates that make the slot that the side stand fits into. This is a good reminder to check you side stand and make sure it is not loose. RandyA
