No Clutch on my "83"
Venturous Randy replied to lwinders's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The first thing I would try is bleeding the clutch again and make sure it is not over filled. I would then try not to load the clutch anymore than I had to, like staying out of traffic. Also, make sure your rear brakes are not dragging. RandyA -
The added air acts as additional spring pressure. Adding oil is like increasing the dampening effect and adding thicker oil will do that to some degree also.. RandyA

When I replaced the speedo with another one years ago, it was three or four miles per hour off. I recalibrated it and it is only off one mph at 70 according to a stopwatch and my GPS. RandyA

In my opinion, if you were going to put a radar detector on any vehicle, it should be on a motorcycle. The reason I say this is a motorcycle, especially a 1st gen seems to be pretty stealthy. The problem with this is radar is not discriminating enough and radar reads the strongest bounceback, not the fastest or slowest. Therefore, if you are going down the highway doing 55mph in a 55mph speed limit and you have a truck a half mile behind you doing 65mph, the cop is going to get a 65mph reading and unless he is well trained, you are going to get pulled over. If you know from a beep that you are in the vicinity of radar, it does give you a chance to see how fast you are going, not just to slow down, but to confirm to you that you are or not speeding. My problem is at one time those that used radar were fairly well trained, like State Troopers. Now we have deputies and Constables that I suspect know little more than how to turn their radar gun on. Occasionally when we have the units set up beside the road that constantly send out radar and have a big screen that posts speeds, my detector may go off a mile before I get to it and I have to be very close, less than 200 feet to get it to read me, and if I am in any traffic, even stretched out, it will not read me at all. Several years ago I heard of a State Trooper that was suing because he had testicular cancer and he said it was from laying the radar gun in his lap. This is the same kind of radar you get from automatic doors and some motion detectors. RandyA

Shift indicator switch
Venturous Randy replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It sounds like you have a 84 and up dash in an 83. If you look under the left side behind the clutch slave cylinder, you will see a round switch that either has one or five wires coming out of it. An 83 has one and 84 up has five. If you have an 84 up dash and want all the gear indicators to work, you will need to put the 84 up switch in and the wiring harness from an 84 up. RandyA -

My eye surgeon has decided he wants to do another surgery tomorrow. This time, due to more blood vessel problems, he wants to take the oil back out and fix the problem vessels and the do the air bubble thing again. At present I have virtually no usable vision out of my right eye and have found if I wear my eye patch, it seems to help with my headaches. I don't know if this will help my vision any, but we will see(no pun intended). RandyA

Have you got a code reader that you can put on it? RandyA

I was there last year and so wanted to go this year. Linda and I were talking just a while ago about how much we enjoyed it and need to figure how we can be there next year. RandyA

Thanks for the pics. I really wanted to be there this year, but just could not do it. It looks like it has been a lot cooler this year compared to last year. RandyA

I would like to have the link so I can send it to everyone I know. Thanks for posting this. RandyA

Your discription of running poorly at part throttle sounds like plugged pilot jets. These are the jets in the little manifold block that has the rubber plugs. RandyA

Starter Clutch Removal

Are you checking the oil with the bike level, as on the center stand? If you are checking it on the side stand, it will read low. RandyA -
Have you synced the carbs? If you have one carb not responding at idle, it may be completely closed off. RandyA

What do you recommend to Balance and Seal Tires?
Venturous Randy replied to GolfVenture's topic in Watering Hole
I agree with goose, it is not a difficult job to do a good balance with the axle and jack stands and am not comfortable putting anything in my tires for the long haul. I can see using Fix-a-Flat in an emergency, and I did put some Green Slime in my lawn tractor that fixed a slow leak. Glad to see you back Goose and I enjoy your carefully thought out and informative dissertations. RandyA -
It has been a long time since I took that first ride after getting it back together after doing the 2nd gear repair. But I still remember how I babied it for a short distance and then I could not wait any longer in doing a wide open throttle run throuigh 1st and 2nd gear. I remember it felt so very good. I am so glad that is coming together for you Lewis. RandyA

That would have been Jim's Motorcycle shop and they are good people. I got my first motorcycle there in 1964. It was a Ducati 125 Bronco. I may stop by there and mention your post. As far as houses for sale close by, both my sisters own real estate companies in Johnson City and I am sure they would love to help you. RandyA

The one I bought works really well and seems to be very repeatable. But, on mine the bike came with it as it is attached from the factory as I have a 1st gen before all the improvements were made when 2nd gens were produced......yeah. RandyA

It is interesting that Linda made a comment about how much different it is riding on a bike and people looking or stopping to talk compared to being in a car. What started the conversation was we were being passed by a couple in a cage and the woman in the passenger seat made a point to turn toward us and smile and wave. And, as we know, it is common for people to make comments and engage in conversation when we are parked. One of the things that really surprised Linda when she started riding with me was the waving. I personally feel it is important for the driving public to see us bikers waving and acknowledging each other. Whether they think we know each other or not, I feel that it is important that they think of us as a group that will help each other and that we also may come to the defense of each other if needed. I think of others looking at us as a positive and never considered otherwise. RandyA
