  1. One second at 45 mph is 66 feet and that would be the distance behind a bike in the lane beside you and about 130 feet from the one in front of you. Theoretically that is about 2,000 feet for 30 bikes. I remember a ride to Dillard house several years ago at Vogal and we must have been strung out for way over a half mile. I think we were around 30 bikes on that ride. RandyA
  2. To go along with Eck's question about blockers, I have a question about group rider spacing. I am not a fan of everyone bunched up real close, but I have been on several group rides that got very strung out, even without any cages mixed in. It has appeared to me that the first three or four bike tends to set the trend, even if there are 30 or more bikes in the group. If the lead bikes run closer, the rest seem to ride closer. I know that when I am riding where there is good scenery, I am not comfortable looking around while in a group. But it also irritates me for the group to get strung out when there is 200 to 300 feet between bikes. I think this also irritates cagers when they would prefer not to pull out into the group, but being so strung out makes them inpatient. When riding 40 to 50 mph on a nice two lane, is there a preference for spacing? RandyA
  3. Is a 2nd gen headlight not adjustable as you are riding down the road like a 1st gen? RandyA
  4. K&N filter(S)? Are you using the stock air box? As far as the carbs from Pinwall, I would definate go though the carbs and clean them, especially the pilot jets in the little manifold under the rubber plugs. RandyA
  5. My 83 runs fine at 40 to 50 mph in 5th and is not lugging. In fact, unless I am going up an incline, my bike will accellerate fine from 25 mph in 5th. I have put 132,000 miles on my bike and if I had a buck for everytime it has seen 8,000 rpm's, I could probably buy a 2nd gen, so it has been ridden at a lot of different rpm's. As far as tire pressure, I run Elite 3's and 40 psi on the back would be low. Also, how good is your pressure gauge? RandyA
  6. I have had an overflow one time and I took the inlet line loose from the carb and used compressed air and blew into the fuel bowl. It immediately solved my problem and has not occured again. It appears I had something in the float valve. RandyA
  7. If your 1st gen is running right, you will not feel it is holding back, you will be holding on. What brand of tires do you have and what pressure are you running? My bike, and a lot of other 1st gens tended to have a tail wag at 70mph and up with an Avon Venom rear tire. If you stick around here, we can help you with most anything. I also wish I was closer to you and I would be glad to help you out and have you ride my 83. RandyA
  8. Just like a Hardley wannabe with parts falling off. RandyA
  9. With so many systems going at once, I would suspect a loose ground wire, as that is the common link. RandyA
  10. No matter how you still feel about it, you did the right thing. RandyA
  11. I have an 85 that I need to put some plastic back on that I need to sell. It is serial # 5000+ so it is after the factory 2nd gear fix. I am in Johnson City. RandyA
  12. Also, check for vacuum leaks. RandyA
  13. I just reserved D-21 for the weekend starting on Thursday. We ususally stay between D-21 to about D-25 or so for the group. This is going to come together and be great, as it always is.:cool10: RandyA
  14. I did mine years ago and like it just fine. I even think it is cooler on my legs and I ride with shorts on all the time. I cut the lower part a bit in front of the point where it connects and used a heat gun to soften the ABS plastic and rolled it to a point. I then used some plastic epoxy to shape the point and sanded it down. I also removed some material at the upper part to get the side panel to align with the upper fairing. I have some pictures on my PC that has not been on in a long time and can try pulling them up if you want. They show the backside of the panels. I call them "bikini side panels" RandyA
  15. I have about $60 in it, not counting my work and a new ball. When I received it there was some surface rust on the chrome and I sanded it all down and painted it silver. It looks pretty good and these Markland hitches for the MK1's are getting rare. Like I said, I would have it on my bike if it did not interfere with the lightbar. You all make me an offer if you are interested and we will talk. I am not sure what shipping costs will be. RandyA
  16. When you filled up at 3.25 gallons, you had about 2 gallons left. When my fuel light comes on, I know I have about 50 miles left if I push it. RandyA
  17. What I did was to take the "C" shaped bar and put it in a big vise and make the length shorter. That has the same effect as making the spring shorter. Did it help you in getting the bike on the centerstand. Did it go from almost impossible to just very difficult? RandyA
  18. Hey Mike, did you ever out that centerstand on your bike that I shortened for you? RandyA
  19. I have put 133,000 miles on my 83 in 16 years and it has always been on reserve. My gas gauge works fine and I also tend to notice my odometer when it gets low. I have run it low and have never run out of gas. To me, it works just like my car. I can not understand why anyone would need to run their bike with it not on reserve if it has a working, repeatable gas gauge. RandyA
  20. Wow, is that the bike you did the rebuild on 2nd gear? I have a Markland hitch that I got a couple of years ago that I was going to put on my 83, but it interfered with the light bar, so I just left the homemade one on it. If you are interested in it, let me know. RandyA
  21. Do you mean cubic feet? You can have an area dimension with square feet, but that will not show volume. RandyA
  22. If the problem is very big, I can not imagine there is not a class action law suit on this already. The statement the dealer made about worn tooling is absolutely stupid and I would ask him to put that statement in writing for you. RandyA
  23. Last Friday Linda and I took a ride over the mountains to between Burnsville, NC and the Blue Ridge Parkway on highway 80. There is a state park and campground called Carolina Hemlocks Park. It has some wonderful swimming in the river that has several deep pools and is a great place to snorkle and the water is very cold and clear. After we swam for a while, we rode up on The BRP and went up on MT Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi. We had a picnic and the temperature was 74 degrees. It was a great ride as it was 101 degrees at home. RandyA
  24. Rearend clutches indicate a posi traction type rear end. One of the biggest problems is using a differential lube that is not made for a clutch type rear end. But, I can not imagine the dealer not putting the correct lube in the rearend. RandyA
  25. Yes, I do use a radar detector and no, it does not have a cover on it as it is mounted in the vent hole. When one of you guys get a ticket because an SUV a quarter mile behind you was speeding, you will wish you had a detector so you could be absolutely sure how fast you were going, not that it will matter to most cops or judges. I may run five or so over and mine has warned me many times when I needed to know. RandyA
