We had an incident at Vogal years ago and even though it was not life threatening, it did require a hospital trip. But, it did not seem like anyone had access to those that were back at the campsite to come and get the bike. So, on our first Asheville Rally, I started the ICE list and if nothing else it does help each get in touch. I do not put the info on here and just try to give copies to those that contributed their information. One other thing is I carry an ICE list with me at all times that has several names that can be contacted if necessary. RandyA

For those coming to the Asheville Rally, I always like to do an "In Case of Emergency" list. Thankfully, we have not had to use the info for a crash situation, but it was used for coordinating of meet-ups. I would like to use this format so I can just do a cut & paste: It also helps if you keep it a simple font and no color. Your name(s), phone numbers, where staying, estimated arrival, emergency contact number with name or relationship. Randy Atkins 423-726-0431 , KOA, Thur afternoon, 423-335-1484, son Please forward it to my home email; rsatkins@comcast.net or PM me here. I will have copies for everyone who is on the list upon arrival and will be glad to e-mail you a copy before you leave if I have the info by Wednesday or I will see if Warrior can make copies for those that show up early. Thanks, RandyA

2nd Gen speedometer off - Warranty claim?
Venturous Randy replied to XV1100SE's topic in Watering Hole
Nope, don't need a bicycle speedometer, as my 1st gen is spot on. We never had the problems like the 2nd gen have. RandyA -
It would be very difficult to be able to confirm whether you have a loose baffle in the collector by looking in the pipes. Maybe on some, but I had to cut mine open to fix it and confirm where the problem was. The slave cylinder can come out real easy, or it can be difficult. You have to take the middle gear cover off to be able to get to it and make sure you have an allen head wrench that fits real good. It may be very tight and you do not want to round out the hole. As far as rebuild or replace, I have done both and replacing with a new one is better, as the cylinder usually gets pitted. As far as greasing the driveshaft, the 86 and up should lube the rear splines from the rearend oil. The front splines are not as critical, but should be greased. You also need to grease the splines on the hub. RandyA

disable YICS???
Venturous Randy replied to Tkosanic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I capped mine off several years ago and the bike ran better and my gas mileage is better. I have had a problem with the caps having the top come off, and it is always one of the two that are the hardest to get to. The next time I have good access to them, I am going to put a short piece of hose on and put a plug in the hose. I believe it will last a lot longer. RandyA -
I believe the difference is the plug is styled differently, but I am not sure when the change occured. I think the 86 is the same as the 83. RandyA

A huge cost of manufacturing anything is tooling cost. As in the engine, there would be very expensive diecast tooling along with automated machining. With the amount of the V-4 engines that have been produced, I can not imagine there has been a lot of tooling wear. Given this and all the tooling involved in producing the rest of the components and the lack of extensive change, the Venture should not be that expensive to make. To give you an idea of what components cost, I was the Quality Manager for years for as company that produced the fan motors that go into appliances such as refrigerators, Coke machines, ice machines, etc. When I left there in 95, they were producing 65,000 motors per week. The motors that went into the Whirlpool refrigerators were sold to them at less than $7 each. If you ordered a replacement from Whirlpool, you can bet that it would cost a bit more than $7. An example of this is the plastic elbow that comes out of the water pump. Yamaha lists this part at close to $50. It does not take a rocket scientist to know that this part is produced at probably less than a buck, given the lack of necessary tooling and engineering upgrades. Can you imagine how cheap that Yamaha, or the supplier, actually has in producing carb diaphragms? To make changes as Richard noted, it would not be a big cost to do an update that would be enough to freshen up the Venture. As we know, Yamaha has built a great motorcycle, beginning in 1983 up until now. What we also know is Yamaha has done an extremely poor job marketing their top of the line bike. RandyA

Yep, unless you live under a rock, you would be amazed at how much information there is out there about you, especially if you are involved with media like Facebook. The way I read this, the ACLU may be asking for accountability on this information and I don't see anything wrong with that. I am definitely not a fan of the ACLU, but sometimes they are looking out for our best interest. RandyA

Not running well
Venturous Randy replied to Tkosanic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Check your spark plug caps, they have a built in resistor that can corrode. Just unscrew it from the wire and with a screw diver you can take it apart. Also, these bikes run poorly with the air box off. Also, welcome to the site and this will be the best $12 you will ever spend on your bike. RandyA -
First of all, you do not have a clutch cable as it is hydraulic. The usual problem is the spring that pushes the lever out has weakened. If you take the screw out that the lever pivots on, there is a rod that pushes the piston in. It will have a spring on it and you can usually stretch the spring some and put it back together. That will usually fix your problem. RandyA

Well, when you run it into a tree out in the woods and it busts your head wide open, make sure they examine your head real good. RandyA

I have a Megellan I bought cheap off the daily deal places and it works good. The volume is louder than the last one and that is better. I call it Gipsy and the only time I have been misdirected is when I put in "shortest route". I figure that is the "As the crow flies" route because it usually will end at some farmer's pasture. About the only thing I would wish was better is if I take a different route, it tells me way too long to "make a legal U turn", before it finally gets on track. I keep waiting for her to say, "OK, if this the way you want to go, I can deal with it." I do have to say that if I am going some place I have never been before, it is neat getting there. RandyA

The thing is, this is going to get worse. How many 10 to 15 years old do you see texting constantly? Unless something is done, these same kids are going to be driving soon and we will see even more people on the road texting. To some of these kids, it is as necessary as breathing and this is the way their parents are raising them. As long as the kids are quiet and not bothering them, thats great. I guess we will have to let Darwin take care of it and we will just be the collateral damage. RandyA

Baffle removal
Venturous Randy replied to jeremy_abfalter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Jemery, one thing you need to do before you go screaming down the road is the tires. With these being 15+ years old, I would be scared of them. When you do replace the rear tire, make sure you take the rearend off and remove the driveshaft and grease both ends and the splines inside the rear hub. RandyA -

Anytime I try to respond to anything on Craigs List or other things, my computer automatically goes to Windows Live Mail and I have never set it up and don't even know how to get into it. I use Comcast mail and Yahoo. I need to either set it up or change it to go to an account I now use. Any suggestions? If giving suggestions, please make it basic. I am somewhat computer challenged. Thanks, RandyA

I suspect caps also. When you replace the caps, cut a 1/4 inch or so off the wire and it will probably work fine. We hope you will join us and it will be the best $12 you will ever spend on your bike. And, you will get some entertainment too. RandyA

Baffle removal
Venturous Randy replied to jeremy_abfalter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Mine has 153,000 miles and runs great. Are you sure your's is not 142,000 miles? Do you know any history on the bike? 42K is less than 1,500 miles per year and 142,000 is less than 5,000 miles a year. For many of us, 5,000 miles would be a slow year. I have had years where I put 10,000 to 12,000 miles on my bike and I am not a big rider compared to some of these guys. We hope you join and it will be the best $12 you will ever spend on your bike.
