  1. Yep, welcome aboard and don't be shy. You got a good looking bike and someone has put a lot of bling on it. Good to have another 1st genner on board. You should have ridden up the mountain to Asheville this past weekend. RandyA
  2. I just want to say a big thanks to Mark, Warrior/Honeybee, for all the effort and enthuasiam that he put into our Asheville Rally this year. He did a great job and made a great get together even better. I also want to thank Ron, Sylwoody, and his wife Katrina for also bringing a fantastic setup for us to gather and be able to get out of the rain and hangout. And, again this year, they brought some incrediblely good wine that Ron's father makes. They stayed over with us Sunday night and we had a great ride over the Blue Ridge Parkway Sunday to Cherokee and had a great meal at Grannie's Restaurant. I just can not believe the weekend is over with. RandyA
  3. I have to agree as Linda and I were talking about what a fun person she is and was glad to have spent the time with her and her husband at Asheville. My suggestion would have been "Hoot". RandyA
  4. I also took a couple of pictures this morning of the lake at the campground with the geese and the morning fog. RandyA
  5. Wow, what a great time. I am going to also post some pictures. RandyA
  6. I will go back and see who wanted a copy of the ICE list, but if you would send me a another PM on here with your E-mail address, it would help. I have received the ICE data on here and my e-mail. RandyA
  7. Mileage is directly related to how much you open the throttle, I believe, more than RPM. If you are running in 5th and without changing the throttle and downshift to 4th, and the bike speeds up, I believe at that point you would get better mileage in 4th. Conversely, if you are running in 4th and shift to 5th and have to give it less throttle to maintain the same speed, then 5th would be better. I recently took a ride going from 1,600 to over 6,000 feet and back down on several occasions two-up and got a little over 45 mpg. About a 1/4 of the ride was at about 65 mph. I may have gotten better, but most was on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and I tended to lug the bike a bit, running in 5th, when 4th would have been better pulling up the mountain. I have actually tried to pay attention to try to get better mileage by short shifting, not lugging, but just running easy and seemed to get a little worse. I have gotten as good as 49 mpg, but never reached the 50 mpg point. I tend to ride a bit spirited, but unless you are running WOT a lot, it does not seem to hurt much. I also put in new diaphragms and did the needle mod. I did it by going to Lowe's and getting washers and playing around to see what worked best. On my first try, I must have went too far as the bike had a little hesitation and was not as responsive. I went a little thinner on the washers and nailed it. If I remember correctly, I removed the little protrusion on the nylon washer and used about .093 thick washers, but I am not positive. I think the protrusion is supposed to center the needle better, but I am not sure. I also have less fuel smell at idle. It also does not have seem like it hurt power at all. RandyA
  8. I'm just glad I am getting old!!!
  9. Buddy, do you have any idea what could have caused this? Thanks for the response. RandyA
  10. I have been trying to help a friend that has had a starter problem and up to now, it has been related to blowing the starter solenoid like the engine is locked up like hydrolock. This is a 96 1500. Well, now it is worse. We pulled starter earlier and cleaned it and he just finished a 3,400 mile trip. He was at the Harley drags as part of CMA support and when he tried to start his bike it made a loud crunch and now the starter freewheels. I pulled the starter out and as you can see from the gears, it don't look so good. Anybody have any suggestions? This can be mover to the Goldwing section after it has been seen. RandyA
  11. PARTY TIME!!!!!!! RandyA
  12. You know that if you get anywhere near east Tennessee, you have a place to stay. RandyA
  13. We had an incident at Vogal years ago and even though it was not life threatening, it did require a hospital trip. But, it did not seem like anyone had access to those that were back at the campsite to come and get the bike. So, on our first Asheville Rally, I started the ICE list and if nothing else it does help each get in touch. I do not put the info on here and just try to give copies to those that contributed their information. One other thing is I carry an ICE list with me at all times that has several names that can be contacted if necessary. RandyA
  14. Check this out. RandyA http://www.dealsgap.com/store.htm
  15. HUH?
  16. For those coming to the Asheville Rally, I always like to do an "In Case of Emergency" list. Thankfully, we have not had to use the info for a crash situation, but it was used for coordinating of meet-ups. I would like to use this format so I can just do a cut & paste: It also helps if you keep it a simple font and no color. Your name(s), phone numbers, where staying, estimated arrival, emergency contact number with name or relationship. Randy Atkins 423-726-0431 , KOA, Thur afternoon, 423-335-1484, son Please forward it to my home email; rsatkins@comcast.net or PM me here. I will have copies for everyone who is on the list upon arrival and will be glad to e-mail you a copy before you leave if I have the info by Wednesday or I will see if Warrior can make copies for those that show up early. Thanks, RandyA
  17. In east Tennessee, we have had the wettest July on record. It did surprise me because the first part of the month was dry. RandyA
  18. It would be very difficult to be able to confirm whether you have a loose baffle in the collector by looking in the pipes. Maybe on some, but I had to cut mine open to fix it and confirm where the problem was. The slave cylinder can come out real easy, or it can be difficult. You have to take the middle gear cover off to be able to get to it and make sure you have an allen head wrench that fits real good. It may be very tight and you do not want to round out the hole. As far as rebuild or replace, I have done both and replacing with a new one is better, as the cylinder usually gets pitted. As far as greasing the driveshaft, the 86 and up should lube the rear splines from the rearend oil. The front splines are not as critical, but should be greased. You also need to grease the splines on the hub. RandyA
  19. I capped mine off several years ago and the bike ran better and my gas mileage is better. I have had a problem with the caps having the top come off, and it is always one of the two that are the hardest to get to. The next time I have good access to them, I am going to put a short piece of hose on and put a plug in the hose. I believe it will last a lot longer. RandyA
  20. I believe the difference is the plug is styled differently, but I am not sure when the change occured. I think the 86 is the same as the 83. RandyA
  21. A huge cost of manufacturing anything is tooling cost. As in the engine, there would be very expensive diecast tooling along with automated machining. With the amount of the V-4 engines that have been produced, I can not imagine there has been a lot of tooling wear. Given this and all the tooling involved in producing the rest of the components and the lack of extensive change, the Venture should not be that expensive to make. To give you an idea of what components cost, I was the Quality Manager for years for as company that produced the fan motors that go into appliances such as refrigerators, Coke machines, ice machines, etc. When I left there in 95, they were producing 65,000 motors per week. The motors that went into the Whirlpool refrigerators were sold to them at less than $7 each. If you ordered a replacement from Whirlpool, you can bet that it would cost a bit more than $7. An example of this is the plastic elbow that comes out of the water pump. Yamaha lists this part at close to $50. It does not take a rocket scientist to know that this part is produced at probably less than a buck, given the lack of necessary tooling and engineering upgrades. Can you imagine how cheap that Yamaha, or the supplier, actually has in producing carb diaphragms? To make changes as Richard noted, it would not be a big cost to do an update that would be enough to freshen up the Venture. As we know, Yamaha has built a great motorcycle, beginning in 1983 up until now. What we also know is Yamaha has done an extremely poor job marketing their top of the line bike. RandyA
  22. Yep, unless you live under a rock, you would be amazed at how much information there is out there about you, especially if you are involved with media like Facebook. The way I read this, the ACLU may be asking for accountability on this information and I don't see anything wrong with that. I am definitely not a fan of the ACLU, but sometimes they are looking out for our best interest. RandyA
  23. Do I understand that you are taking the oil fill cap out to check oil level? RandyA
  24. Check your spark plug caps, they have a built in resistor that can corrode. Just unscrew it from the wire and with a screw diver you can take it apart. Also, these bikes run poorly with the air box off. Also, welcome to the site and this will be the best $12 you will ever spend on your bike. RandyA
  25. First of all, you do not have a clutch cable as it is hydraulic. The usual problem is the spring that pushes the lever out has weakened. If you take the screw out that the lever pivots on, there is a rod that pushes the piston in. It will have a spring on it and you can usually stretch the spring some and put it back together. That will usually fix your problem. RandyA
