I'm thinking of modifying the trailer so bike moves forward 1 foot in relation to the axle. Not sure if I can have axle moved back, or cut front of trailer & add a foot on there. So at 10%, I should probably see a tongue weight of 100# or so...which is 75#+ away from what I have now.

Looks like the Avon Cobra tires have replaced the Venoms I've been running. In comparing the Cobra 150/90B15 to Michelin Commanders, I see a number of people here run both on their RSVs. Is there any concern that the Michelin only has a load rating of 74 (827#), while the Avon has a load rating of 80 (992#)?

I hauled my RSV 300 miles last week during a storm (then rode it 2000 miles). It's the 1st time I've trailered the 2006 RSV on this trailer, but I previously trailered my 1989 VR many times with no problems. Apparently the RSV center of gravity is different than the VR. The RSV center of gravity is located exactly over the axle (at least the center stand holes are)...giving a tongue weight of only about 25# according to my scale. The trailer probably weights 400#, the bike is probably 850#...so 25# tongue weight seems way too low...which would explain why the trailer was weaving back & forth while driving unless I was either on the gas or on the brake. So my question is...does anyone know where the RSV center of gravity should reside in relation to the trailer axle? or what the tongue weight when loaded should be? I'm thinking of modifying trailer so the bike moves forward about a foot...but who knows if that's enough or too much? Any "good" advice? Attached is photo of the loaded bike/trailer...

Want to get an 8x20 toyhauler and haul my RSV. I'm looking for advice on a wheel chock for the front tire. I'd like something I can secure to the floor somehow to keep it from sliding, but when removed I don't want a big bracket sitting there that I constantly stub my toe on! Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...JR

Yea I'm using the power adapter on lower left of fairing to power my smartphone. If a guy adds one of these Radio Shack filters...where does it get installed?

Use smartphone for navigation & music. Previously split fairing & added cable to hook up xm radio. Since have ditched xm for galaxy s3. Has been working fine until today...day 1 of 2 wk trip. When phone is outputting (nav or music), I get no static or engine noise. When navigation is not speaking...get horrible static/engine noise. Unplug phone patch cable & no noise thru headsets...but plug back in & get same static/engine noise... Tried 2 patch cables & get same from both. Any ideas why im hearing that?

I drilled out the stock pipes...too quiet still... Then got some Road King pipes & drilled out...much better but still not what I wanted. Then I got some Barons Bag Slash pipes...way too loud for me. Then I got Khrome Werks pipes...right in the middle. They've got a good sound but not too loud...even my wife is ok with them!

I drained each carb & then flushed gas thru them. After putting all back together, the fuel pump doesn't run for 5 seconds every time I turn on the key, and it's not shooting fuel out of the exhaust pipe. The fuel pump does click once every time I turn the key on, which I don't think it did before, but it may have cuz I've never listened THAT close. If it's still ok tomorrow then can I try starting it & hope it's ok? What about all the fuel that ran thru the exhaust pipe?...do I need to be concerned with that???
-
Went to start the bike today & don't know why but I turned the key on/off multiple times. Each time I noticed the fuel pump kicking in. I did it a dozen times in a row & the pump ran each time. Then I smelled gas & found that the right front carb had gas leaking around it (overflow?). After awhile I hit the start button for a couple seconds & it didn't start luckily. But I got pretty concerned when I saw gas coming out of the right exhaust pipe back by the rear wheel. WTF?! Is that normal even if the float is stuck? What to do now?

Got home from trip & after washing bike, I noticed I have tiny yellow specks of paint on windshield and fairing. I remember going by a striping crew & wind was blowing...thought I stayed clear of em but apparently not. Is there any cleaner that'll remove the specks without damaging the plastics?

For pwr I used the clamp over wire type. They seem tight tho. I will try cleaning the fuse holder tho too. Today they're working fine...so far anyways! Thanks guys.

While on cycle trip, my mic mute is acting up. One day it works...the next it doesn't. When it does work, then it's been good for the day. when not working, neither ptt button has any affect...the mic is always live. I checked all connections under seat but don't have tools or desire to split fairing while on the road. Anyone ever had weird problem witn them before?

What's the function of these covers?
jryan replied to jryan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'll buy that. I'd have probably put a swooper piece over the rail on both sides just to make it look uniform on both sides. But I guess if they did that, they probably would've had to leave the casssette deck out to keep the costs down! HA! Thanks guys, just was curious...JR -
While changing plugs yesterday, I removed some of these covers. While doing so, I wondered what function they provide other than just being nice & shiny. On both left & right, the front covers are similar. But the back ones are different than the fronts...and different from each other. The back left is 3 pieces, with the top piece having a swoop in it. The back right is 2 pieces..no swooping 3rd piece. Why not? Am I supposed to have 3 pieces on both sides? What's the purpose of the back covers?...why not just a single piece like the front covers? They don't seem to serve any purpose that I can see...unless it's just to keep the plug wires elevated a bit. Any ideas?

I measured across 2 connector pins. I then bypassed pump & connected fuel tank direct to carbs...fired right up like it used to. Will order new pump tomorrow. Glad it happened before leaving on trip in 2 wks!

I pulled the fuel pump connector and did verify I get 12v for about 5 seconds after turning key on. I also hear the relay click once when it first turns on and sends power to the fuel pump. So since the fuel pump is getting 12v and not running, it must be that fuel pump right? No need to check any further is there? I am gonna try bypassing the fuel pump just so I know how to do it if I ever breakdown somewhere besides my garage!

Tonight I tried to go for a ride on my 06RSV. It started, but was hardly running...then would stop after 15 seconds of chugging. I kept trying & almost ran the battery out. It would try to start, and sometimes did, but then seemed like it was only running on 1 cylinder. When I quit trying, I felt the pipes & 1 was hot (left rear) but the other 3 were just barely warm. I pulled all the plugs & they looked ok. Noticed that I wasn't hearing the fuel pump click when turning key on. I drained fuel from 2 carbs & turned on key...still no clicking. I rapped on the fuel pump...still nothing. I didn't check the fuel filter...it's fairly new...but if the pump isn't clicking I didn't see a reason to. Is there more checking I should do or is it definitely a dead pump?

Anyone using these tire pressure monitors? These are only $30...I was looking at the Big Bike Parts wireless tire monitor but not ready to blow $228 for that. But would be nice to know the pressure's ok without getting under the bike with a gauge. If anyone is using these, how do you like them??? Thanks for the info...JR

I think Modulator might have saved me today...
jryan replied to frogmaster's topic in Safety and Education
I ran one on my 1st gen for the last few years before I sold it...worked great! I moved it to my 2nd gen prior to the sale. Very simple install & no problems that I saw...JR -
I'm looking for a cargo trailer to haul my RSV in and just looking for some tips from people that have bought them. Things like "if I was to buy another one, I'd make sure it had..." I'd like it as light as possible, but also want something that's good quality as I plan on having it for a long time. Looks like Featherlight, Wells Cargo, and USCargo are out there...not sure which others. I'm sure I'll get flamed from people saying I should just ride the bike. But there are times when it'd be nice to haul the bike from ND to the south and then explore from there (like January when it's -30 degf)!

Not sure exactly what the cause is, but the screech goes away when the IC is set below 17. At 17, 18, 19, & 20 it screeches. At 16 & below it's ok. Normally I run it about 10-12 so I'm hoping it stays in that upper range. I checked/greased/reseated all the connectors but didn't make a difference. So for now I'm somewhat happy, although I don't think it used to screech even at 20, so I'm still curious! Oh well...

After replacing my broken fairing & putting everything back together, all works fine except when I plugged in my helmet headset cable tonight to the bike when going for a ride & got a super loud high pitched constant screeching sound. It happens with different helmets, different cables, and when connected to either the front or rear connectors...so I must've missed something when reconnecting all the radio wiring. I have mic-mutes installed too. Radio & XM work fine thru speakers though. Anyone know what I might've missed before I split the fairing again & go hunting for things?

Leaking Barons V4 Water Pump Cover
jryan replied to jryan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I put the stock piece back on today & no leaks, so I'll leave that on for now as I'm getting ready for a cycle vacation. I found the problem though. The stock piece has a wider groove for the o-ring so it has a little bit of wiggle room for movement. On the Barons piece, the groove is sized exactly to the size of the o-ring so if it's not in there perfectly you can have problems. So even though it looked & felt good, when I started tightening the bolts, the o-ring wanted to move slightly to seat good but since there was absolutely no room for movement, the o-ring split. Both the o-rings I used on the Barons had splits in them. Maybe I'll try again later this summer but for now I'll leave well enough alone! Thanks everyone...JR -
I bought a new Barons V4 Water Pump Cover and replaced the stock cover, using a new o-ring, and it leaked when starting. I tightened it down more but still leaked. So I got another new o-ring and reinstalled again today, making sure I got it seated properly. After torquing per the book (7.2 ft/lb) and refilling radiator, it leaked again. I tightened the screws down a bit more (10 ft/lb) & it still weeps. I've got 1 more o-ring left so am thinking of putting the stock piece back on again. Just wondering if anyone else with this V4 cover had any leaks? And wondering how tight do I dare torque those bolts in? Also, what's the normal water temp if the bike's been sitting at idle for 5 minutes?
