i really am saddened to read of fatalities of riders and passengers. I really dislike all the inevitable finger pointing......the big thing is that someone didnt make it through the ride, and their life is over too early. Brian

Very noise clutch I believe
friesman replied to smcgillis's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I have the same intermittent clutch noise in my 85 too, but its not really a rattle its deeper than that, but if it was under warranty you can bet it would be in getting looked at. -
There arent too many Ventures anywhere. But they do seem to attract attention whereever you go with it. Ive only ever seen 2 G1 ventures and 3 G2 ventures here in a city of over 210,000 so I dont think you can ever call them common. I do see a lot more vmaxes around though. Brian

Minor Brake Rub on Rear
friesman replied to utadventure's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Mine does that too, and I think it is probably a slightly warped brake rotor. I only notice mine when backing out of a prking stall or out of my trailer. I never hear it at speed and dont feel any pulsing when stopping so Im not too worried about it. My brakes stop fine and i dont think there is a stuck piston in the caliper as it looks like the pads squish against the rotor when I push the lever down. i was going to have a bit better look while the tire is out next week just to confirm before taking down to Cody. brian -
If ur invisible when youre riding at least Nina wouldnt be able to see the speedo, so you shouldnt get those whacks upside the helmet anymore. Brian

I may still be on vacation making my way home from Cody WY thru Kelowna as well and take the Transcanada highway home so we will probably be on the same highway same time. My Cell is listed, if I dont answer, leave a message and Ill get back to you. If we can meet up along the road, if you guys would like another tagalong I would be happy to ride with you. If I am home in Regina mabbe we can grab a coffee and an ice cream. I have a long sofa and a fold out if you want a break from a hotel room fo a night. My numbers are in my profile or send me a msg in here and Ill get it and see what we can set up. While around Calgary there are some good rides as youre only a short ride to Banff , the Rockies, and the Cowboy highway running north south along the foothills is supposed to be a great ride too Brian

I finally think i have an issue thats been bugging me on my 85 for about 2 years. It has been a very intermittent starting issue that would happen 2 or 3 times a season, usually when the bike was hot and/or sitting in sun. Checked over everything everytime and found nothing wrong, wait for a cool down and it would start......until in a moment of complete frustration:whistling: as it was making me late for work I just started pressing all buttons and switches, and when i sounded the horn, the bike started! http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif as I was still holding the starter!........this set me to checking grounding points and reseating all connections I could think of, but the bike still very occasionally would still not start except by hitting the horn button while holding the starter engaged. Things changed while in Drumheller a couple of weeks ago as I had 3 incidents that day where the bike didnt start, but, the horn trick did its thing, but it was unusual as it never happened that often before. Anyway on the way home we rode thru about an hour of steady rain and the highways were wet for a large chunk of the 8 hour ride home, but the bike ran fine. The next morning after getting home, the bike wouldnt start at all (even with the horn), so I tried to reseat every connection i could think of and liberally sprayed wd40 into the sidestand switch and any connector I could see thinking it would force the water out. The bike started right after that, so I thought i was good and figured it had to be side stand even though my dash showed the stand engaged or not. Anyway bike continued to be undependable starting but now the horn doesnt start it, and its happening much more frequently. Finally, while stranded with a bike that didnt start a couple of days ago I noticed that my clutch switch wiring harness looked like it was twisted and the was loose on the handlebar and the weather boot wasnt covering the connection point totally, so I pulled it apart and cleaned it right there and the bike immediatly fired right up and hasnt given me any issues since.(and I have tried about 50 starts or more) My working theory is that the horn switch wire is in that part of the wiring harness and somehow I had a bad connection inside there and sounding the horn somehow allowed enough current through to complete a circuit. I dont know why i hadnt thought to check that area before, but i was so sure it had to be a ground or my side switch. It works now, and I am fairly sure that Ive fixed the issue, but I am still keeping my fingers crossed. Brian

When is it full?
friesman replied to OldGazer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I want to check mileage I always fill when on the centre stand as you can fill fit to the top and actually see the level on the filler neck that way. when youre on the side stand it seems you have to stand the bike upright to get the fuel down the neck for the last 10% of tank. Any method will work for figuring out mileage as long as you consistently fill it to the same height every time. The reason I like this way is because I can actually see the gas level and it doesnt burp and disappear like it does when on the side stand. As discussed earlier, i wouldnt fill this way unless leaving immedatily on a ride as you will spill out the overflow as the gas heats up if you dont. Brian- 10 replies

Probably not, our lawyers arent quite as sharp as the US ones, and our laws are a bit different. brian

What part of Canada are you headed too? We have quite a good sized group up here that can scare up a donut, ice cream and coffee once in a while if youre interested, just post where youre at and if someone is in the area they can meet you. (some of us scare up those Tim's donuts too often apparently....lol) Enjoy the trip!! Brian

you may be able to find a cheap battery charger, and then ride for a couple of hours until its time for coffee and recharge again, it would be slower travelling, but it would get you home until you can get things apart where you have time and tools. Brian

Depending on price and shipping I would be in for one. Brian

ive used the Mr Moto quick detailer stuff, I like it, and it does work very well, but I still like plain ol Pledge better than anything else ive tried. Brian

Thinking about new audio technology
friesman replied to Dragonslayer's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
I didnt rip any of mine out, i left the bike as it is. I bought the Scala headsets that are wirelss FM, and will allow me to connect to Bluetooth to get my cell phone, gps directions and if you have a gps with mp3 player, even your mp3 music. (I use my MP3 player but it doesnt have blue tooth so it needs a small cord to attach to the scala set) With 2 headsets you also get intercomm and each person can listen to their own music and answer their own phone. I like that they have no cables attaching you to the bike or each other so nothing to get tangled or ripped out. You can also pair up other riders in your pack up to 4 I think and according to book you have about a half mile of connection range. I bought the Scala q2 from motorcyclegear.com for 169 bucks for 2 headsets complete a couple of months back, to me that was cheaper than trying to upgrade the bikes componenets and then possibly still not having what I want for sound. Here is link at MotorcycleGear http://www.motorcyclegear.com/parts/accessories/intercom__communication_systems/cardo_systems/scala_rider_q2_multiset_pro_bluetooth_intercom_boom_mic.html THere is a new version of the scala out now that has even more features but the price also went up when they brought in the new model -
