Modifications for LD Riding .... First Generation VR
friesman replied to twigg's topic in Watering Hole
I have never thought about adding real estate like that for more gadgets...good thinking outside the box. I dont know if you will get better mileage as now the dirty air will swirl around you but keep us posted. A vent in your windshield would also help cool you on those hot days. I have the goldwing vent in mine and it makes a huge difference. Brian -
what are your shift points? If youre reading the manual stop!! the shift points listed in there are way to low. IF youre coming from a vtwin mabbe youre shifting too soon and lugging the engine causing your mileage issues. Brian

Bad Ground or something else?
friesman replied to VentureBob's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Its ok Bob, ANYTIME i work on my 85 I am confused, so youre not alone. I do have a spare CMU if you would like to borrow to see if that is your issue. It is a used untested unit but if you would like to try it out, let me know. brian -
Engine overheated
friesman replied to camos's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
has somethng like wiring or anything wedged in the fan stopping it from running? Myfan motor made some squealing noises and the fan didnt want to spin early this spring but I sprayed some wd40 in there to clean things a bit and about a week later I oiled the bushing a bit as wd40 isnt really a lubricant. brian -
I would move your tci to the location on top of the air intake box. When you do this make sure all connectors are clean and dry and maybe use some dielectric grease to keep them dry and clean. Some people take the tci and put in on their oven door on low temps to dry it out, but if youre dry already, i might skip that step. Brian

they will be ok. they will fit right in with the rest of the nuts, makes em feel right at home in the asylum. Brian

Gas shooting out of carbs after storage
friesman replied to mtuckner's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
i would drain your tank down to very little fuel left, shut off the petcock and drain your bowls and get them empty, then, add a half can of Seafoam to your fuel tank, turn petcock back on and turn key on listen for pump clicks to fill carb bowls, and then start bike just to get the seafoam into everywhere into the carbs. then let it sit over night with the petcock closed so seafoam can clean while you sleep. Stabil is good for what it does- stabilizes fuel. but it doesnt have the cleaning properties of seafoam. here is their website on what seafoam is and what it can do, even a video. http://www.seafoamsales.com/how-to-use-sea-foam-motor-treatment.html Brian -
If you get to know Condor in the Sacramento area, he may be able to give you some local pointers on the bike and who is good or not good to deal with. He has several old bikes and also has a 99, but his is silver. Better yet, make the ride up to Cody WY at the end of July and let us all see your bike and we can all help you spend your money on safety chrome. Brian

Glad to see that you made the jump over from the Facebook page, I am sure some more gurus will be along shortly, but i just wanted to say welcome to the forum. while youre here have alook around and check out some posts in the tech section and see if there is any thing else that you might need on your bike. Brian -
I dont hear any unusual noises when i listen to that, it sounds like a typical, 1300cc 4 valve per cylinder yammie V-4. I cant see how you would need valves adjusted with such a small amount of mileage on that unit, but a carb Sync might be a good idea to even things out if its been sitting around. I would also give it a good dose of Seafoam (about 1/3 can in a tank of fuel) to clean carbs and get that varnish out. My bike always feels silky smooth after a carbs synch and feels a bit buzzy before. (if that makes sense) i can feel the vibrations in my footpegs if its out of sunch. brian

I just saw this about clearing the snow from the Going to the Sun Highway in Glacier Natl Park. The pic was taken 2 days ago, it looks like they have a long way to go to get the road passable, my ride through there less than a month might not happen..... Flikr seems to be having some issues allowing the preview pic to load, but just click the heading in the blue above the black video frame to have a look. There are several pics in there that make you realize just how much snow falls thathigh in the mountain passes, wow! Welcome to VR there arent many sources for our 85's because there arent many around and getting fewer every day. I have bought most of my stuff from watching ebay and checking out the classifieds in here at the top of the page. If your 85 is like mine was, one of your first purchases will probably be progressive spring for inside the fork tubes, to stop the forks from bottoming out on driveway bumps etc. they run about 80 bucks I think so its a fairly cheap mod and is a great bang for your buck. BUT it doesnt make the bike any shinier!!!!! Also check PInwall Cycles Ebay store from time to time if you need parts, they have stuff for our bikes and tend to run fairly expensive for used parts,....but if you need a part it is still cheaper than new and some parts arent even availble as new any more. brian

I am so glad youre ok, youre going to be sore for a few days, but glad thats all its going to be. I dont want to think about what would have happened if you had had the bike out for a ride. I am starting to think that forcing people to pick a check mark for what insurance company they want and include basic coverage in the cost of the license tags is the way to go to try to eliminate some of the uninsured drivers down there. Brian

Yep, have had the air pump out 3 times, fork caps off twice, fixed an collector rattle, and taking a tire off today or tomorrow to get the rear changed out before Cody trip. Brian

Welcome to the loonie bin, ....and I dont mean the Canadian dollar. lol! This a great spot to be and some Venture gurus that have info to help you out. I have an 85 as well that had around 32000kims on it when it was purchased, now it just turned 68000kms and most of the work done to this bike has been done because of this site. Some of the modes done to mine are SS brake lines(dropped my brake distance by at least 1/3), solid motor mounts, metal water pump impeller, new heavier battery and starter cables to avoid the hot start issue, progressive springs in fork tubes, Condor Brace to stiffen front forks, Steble air horn, new throttle cables (4), spark plugs and new wires, and the new thrust washer in the transmission on second gear to make sure 2nd gear stays good. I would consider changing front forks to the newer 86 and up as they dont use the braking system for the antidives, PLUS you can hang a R1 caliper on those forks to get you stopped quicker, and use the newer bigger rotors. a member from here, did the rebuild as I am mechanicall challenged, but have learned to do most of the lighter day to day maintenence items from everyone here. If you need some advice about your 85 just ask and Me or one of the real gurus will jump in and help you out. (or maybe just joke with you about something.....) PS there is a serial number on the 85's above which you shouldnt have the 2nd gear issue, but to be hionest i dont recall one being in the good side of that. I will try to look up that number when i get some time today and will post back here for you. Good luck with the rebuild, Brian

I am glad your son is gonna be ok, I hope the rash heals up quickly and that the itching doesnt drive him too crazy as its healing.... Brian

i really am saddened to read of fatalities of riders and passengers. I really dislike all the inevitable finger pointing......the big thing is that someone didnt make it through the ride, and their life is over too early. Brian

Sure! Walter, youre having Cake and youre not sharing again!!!! I am gonna have to get Jan to have a serious talk toyou!!!! Brian
