If you dont have any coolant or a very weak mixture when the temp drops you will freeze up and break any cast iron or aluminum block . IF you have a mixture thats about 35% or more( I am guessin here on the exact percentages) You should get a tester so you KNOW what temps your antifreeze is good for. The coolant/antifreeze will gel and start popping out frost plugs in some cases but it also stops coolant from flowing at all. Ive seen lots of engines seized as the owner overheated the engine in -35 weather because the coolant wont flow. the only way to get the coolant to a liquid again is to move it to a heated area and let the whole rig sit until it warms up and then inspect for leaks. the thaw can sometimes take a couple of days if has a cast block. Ive seen antifreeze testing good for -35 gel right close to that temp, and Ive seen -35 antifreez gel while travelling on the highway due to the effects of windchill, leaving people stranded. The car was warm when they left town but the highway speeds just cooled everything down so much it gelled, and the main indicator that that is gonna happen is that your heater stops throwing heat and start blowing cold. Recovering a seat.........geesh!
friesman replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 85 had the sticky seat and passenger backrest, so I replaced the seat, but a buddy conviced me to try Fibrenew as they clean and fix screwed up upholstery, vinyl and leather. Anyway they dyed my passenger backrest black to match the new seat and got rid of the stickiness and fixed a couple of small cracks for their minimum charge of 50 bucks if I remember right. It was done a year ago and the backrest looks good, i am thinking I shoulda saved my money and had them redo the seat instead of buying a new seat. I think you can find a Fibrenew business in almost any city in north america if you want to check them out. Here is the website http://www.fibrenew.com/index.php?option=com_easygallery&act=photos&cid=34&Itemid=106 Brian -
I am sorry that you had the episode with your hitch. Ive always had exactly that fear when i ride my bike into the trailer so Ive always put the jack stands under the back everytime i ride the bike in or out. Sometimes i feel kinda finicky for doing that, but I feel better now, so I gotta thank you for being a stand up guy for posting this,. ..A lot of guys wouldnt....I hope the repairs dont cost too much and I am so glad youre ok. I just saved them both to my computer where i could find them, opened up the paint program on my computer, copied both maps into the open paint window, arranged them how I wanted and then clicked save as and named it a name i would remember. Then went into VR and selected that image to upload into the signature. Brian

I think the moral of the story is READ THE LABEL! Use the recommended mix as theyre the guys who have done the tests on their products. Also CHange your antifreeze every 3 years or so because it adds lubricant to your waterpump and the corrosion inhibitors break down over time as well. It wont freeze if you dont change it but clogged water jackets and rads are a PITA. (dont ask) Brian

I went thru the Klamath Falls , Crater Lake area last summer after I left Venture West Iv and would highly recommend taking a route to get to see it if you havnt already seen Crater Lake. I would however recommend taking a warm jacket and and good rain gear, if you go . Last year it was 35f at the outlook areas and raining but it felt like snow, but at the base of the mountain it was 75 or 80f and sunny, so be prepared it can change in 5 minutes with that altitude change. Have Fun!!! Brian

Hey it just dawned on me that no one has mentioned doing a backup as soon as you can and keep doing one regularly so you dont lose those pics and documents. One of my favourites to use is www.mozy.com its a free online backup system thats encrypted and easy to use. You get 2GB of free personal backup space and you can totally select what you want to back up and schedule it, and it works on mac and PC's. If you do run out of backup space you can rent more space from them for 5 bucks a month, but I have found that most people really only have 500mgs to 1gb of really important stuff that needs to be kept secure. Mozy is because you can get at it even if you house burns down, your documents arent lost, and its all automatic once you have it set up. Brian

If youre not going to use it very often, maybe you would be better to rent for a week or 2. I used a rental from uhaul to move mine when I bought it. The cost was around 25 bucks a day, but the caveat is that you already have the proper hitch and wiring on your vehicle and you dont have a Ford Explorer. (they wont rent if you want to tow behind an Explorer for some strange reason:confused24:) Heres the link to the pics I took when my 1st gen was in the uhaul trailer http://picasaweb.google.com/friesman1/MooseJawSaskatchewan Brian

It sounds like you need a good antivirus program and a antispyware program to go with it. I would go to www.snapfiles.com click on freeware on the top right corner, go to Security/privacy section, antivirus tools and I would suggest you download AVG or Avast from their list of free antivirus programs. Then go into the adware and spyware removal section just up the list a bit, and download Spyware terminator or Windows defender as both of these do scanning in real time so stuff doesnt have a chance to get into your system. A lot of spyware scanners only scan once in a while, there is no real time scan when youre on you puter. There are others I am sure but I wanted to keep this fairly short. The only real way to keep a windows machine running quickly is to format the drive every once in a while and do a fresh install to clean up all the stuff and loose files that windows leaves hanging around... Rear trunk fix????
friesman replied to KickStand's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 85 was fixed before I got it , the PO got some fibreglass tape to hold things together, lined the inside of the box with it and then spread a good epoxy over the tape holding the crack together. It seems to have been done quite a while back but it seems to hold very well. Brian -
Yes it is an old update, but somehow that little voice in head was saying you gotta double check just in case someone missed something..........dont worry I dont listen to the voice on too many other things.... brian:rotfl:

It seems like such a waste of time. i spent a big part of the day checking 60 servers in town to double check on the updates and sophos A/v status. If jerks wouldnt write this stuff I could concentrate on real work. Plus it would save my school division about 35k a year on the Antivirus yearly contract renewal. Brian:mo money:

we had about 30 students bring it in on their flash drives I guess. Our Sophos A/V picked it up right away and cleaned everything up. The kids are only sposed to use the flash drive at school,,,,,,,,yeah,,,,like thats gonna happen, LOL brian

I used to have a roof shovel it was a light plastic smooth edge shovel with a long aluminum handle that allowed me to get just about to the peak of my roof while I stood on the ground. I think it was only about 20 bucks or so. I just wont get on a roof with snow on it. I think I bought mine at Canadian tire, but am sure someone in the states must sell them

I am sure its a posed pic as theres no way you could be moving very fast in the cold like that. Here we do have a helmet law, and you notice those little pieces of cardboard trying to block wind...good luck with that!!! Even with heated clothing at -30 most of the day yesterday and colder than that at night its still gonna be cold! On an up side when its that cold the roads arent very slippery even with alll the ice on them. But today we hit 0c (32f)so its gonna get awfully greasy for him, the TC #1 highway theres no snow build up, but the frost will collect on the pavement as the cold pavement will will freeze any moisture in the now warmer air. SO just how do you know what the DOT code means? Is it just a month/year combo, or what? Brian
