does the sync tubes jump around a lot when you put the screwdriver on the screws to adjust them?if they do you may has some looseness in the springs or levers that holds the carb shafts together. if you screw them ccw too much the springs can come out. the single screw syncs the 1 &2 carbs together, the #2 screw which is the screw towards the back of motor, syncs the 3&4 carbs together and screw #3 towards the front of motor, syncs the 2 banks of carbs(1&2 to3&4) together. if you have them wayout of sync you can pull the carbs off so you can see the threaded ends of the #1 & #2, screw the screws ccw till the end of the screw is even with the bracket it's screwed in, then turn them back in 3 full turns cw. the #3 screw is around 1 turn cw from even with bracket. i've got this off a set of carbs that was synced just before taking them off, i think this will get you back close enough to start over.

http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=71010 this is the other thread that's about the same bike, hope it helps out others having the same problem. i think the worst thing for any gas engine is the ethonal they put in gas if it left standing for any long time over a few months. they have now come out with a new stabel for gas with ethonal, i ve also seen another that a lot of small engine shops sell thats supose do a great job but is around $15 a small bottle.

i took the carbs apart and they looked clean all thru. looked at the floats and they looked a little odd. got my gauge out and measured them and they were set about 8 to 9 mms and they should be 14-15mms. they were also crooked from one float to the other on 3 of the carbs. where there's a double set of floats in each bowl the one on the side away from the needle valve was about a mm lower than the other one. terry wants me to let him know if i find anything wrong with them, so i'm going to set them up right and take before abd after pics to show him the differant. i'll probly put them on my bike and run them for awhile to make sure they are ok!! i'll post them on here when i get them done. just hope i can finto do it as i'm still loaded up at work.

1996 RSTD ignition problem
tazmocycle replied to madmaxx2011's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
i would take the wire off the starter and hook 1 of a set of jumper cables from the postive side of the battery and touch the other end to the starter post and see if the starter turns over, you can do this without having the postive cable on the battery. this will let you know if the starter windingare good or not. problybe good to put a nut on the threads of the post on the starter to keep from messing them up. if that works ok, you may have a bad connection in ingition switch, they are a weak spot in the wiring of these bikes. there are some ways of rerouting some of the wiring from the ign switch with relays to get the load off the switch. is youir ign switch up on the front frame or behind the seat on the right? you can take the ign switch apart and see if the contacts are bad. hope this helps out. -
Well i went by terry's yesterday and they had put my set of carbs on the bike and ran it a bit. He said they leaked a little when they first started up but stopped. They had ran it several times and took it for about 30 minutes ride and said it ran great. They didn't sync the carbs, but they said it was running without any lugging or loss of power. After josh get back in town and get it back, i'll try to chech them oit and see if they are in-sync. I'm going to tear the old set down and see if i can find anything in them that was causing the problem. I'll post what i do or nor find. I hope this pick up josh's spirits and he gets to do some riding now.

A friend of mine's brother-in-law lost his right hand and rides 2 differant harlies. He got it set up with the throttle and clutch on the left handle bar. He has a hook on hios right hand and clamps it on the right grip to help steer. I've rode with him a few times and he handles it quit well. He has done several4-10k rides across the contry, last year he broke down out west and had to rent a truck and bring it back to be repaired. Has a ultralglide and a custom built bike. There has always been somebody that can always figure out how to get around even with some limitation. Back in the early 70's, i meet a guy who was parilized from the waist down and he took a honda cb350 twin and built a platform out of tubing and plywood floor on the right sdie of the bike and used a chaindrive to move the handlebars over to the platform and was able to drive it from his wheelchair. He rode it all over town all the time.

i went a few weeks ago to help a young member with his 96 royal star 28mm carbs. got it to run better, but while checking out the float levels the drains screws wouldn't stop leaking. i was going to help him out after i got back from ohio, but he took it to a shop where the guy who owns and does the work. he worked on it and got it running good but when josh took it home it started leaking gas out the overflow again. he took it back and they worked on it again and said the carbs are right, but the gas is boiling in the carbs at about 100 dregees and causing the carbs to overflow. i was wondering if anybody else had heard of this before. i have worked on about 30 of these bikes and never ran into this at all. terry is the guy working on it and i invited him to come on and post on here and see if anybody can help him out. terry's two wheels is the name of his shop and i have sent several friends there that has bmw's as he is really good on them. he also works on several other brands of bikes including a couple of police harlies, hondas and bmws. i'll keep an eye out on this and let him know what to look for when he comes on the site.

i have 2 sets of carbs for the 96-01 royal stars. 1 set is stock and the other has been rejetted for more air and fuel by opening up the airbox which i have a couple of airboxs too. really didn't want to sell but another guy needs 1 carb as he broke the mount for the float off his. i live near birmingham, al and may have a maintance day a little later in year. i had 1 a couple of years ago at columbus, ms and had about 10 guys show up and did a couple of carb tune-up and syncs. i have another member i went to his house last sunday and helped him on his but he still has crap in the carbs and need to reclean them. he's about ready to give up but the bike wasn't taken care of and left setting up for awhile. we stopped the gas from coming out of the overflow but when we was checking the float level the gas was coming out of the stop screws on the bottom of bowl. lot of folks forget about them when cleaning them up. if you can soak them in some cleaner for a day it'll help get the gunk off. sea foam will do a good job too just cover it up with a plastic bag to keep it from evoperate, use a still or tooth brush to clean them. if you don't think you can do it, you can wait after don's md and i'll try to get over and help you.

looking to buy a royal star
tazmocycle replied to Jski5669's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
the 96-01 royal star has smaller 28mm carbs on them and single valve springs and they have about 78 hp as the newer 99-present venture and 05-present td's has double springs, larger 32mm carbs and larger intake cams and has 98hp. the 96-01 can still outrun most hardlies and nomads. i opened up the airbox, rjetted the carbs and put a dyna-tech ign box on it about $400 and added about 15hp to it. i've had it for 11yrs and just rolled over 74k on it. i run it wide-open most of the time. i was looking at a 01 nomad which had the fuel-injection on it, but after i rode the royal, it was the bike for me. the motor sets lower down as the weight and makes the handling, best of all the bikes. you ned to keep the rpms up as you ride it or it'll lug and shake like it has no power. it has a rev-limiter on it which is factory set at around 5800rpms, but i have mine dyna-tech set at 7250 rpms, which allows me to get more power on top-end. on the newer royal star ventures and tds has a lot more power when you do a few mods to them. going from the 250 hysong to the royal it'll be like going from a 4cylinder to a hemi!! both bikes will last if maintance on them, i have friends with nomads that has over 100k on them and several have royals with 100k to 200k on them and still running good. there's a lot of imfo and help from these folks here in dealing with them. good luck on your choice and you can still be a member if you get the nomad too. i also have a wrecked 96 with 5700 miles and a 97 with around 100k, but a couple of other guys who owned it decided to tear into it because they thought it had a blown head gasket, but i'm sure it's the little mixer between the heads. i'm going to put the motor out of the 96 into the other and have 1 for around town and the other for touring and pulling my trailer. -
Hard bags anyone?
tazmocycle replied to MSTour's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
the bags on the 96-01 royals are differant from the 99-present venture and 05-present tds, the lids are latched on both ends. lots of guys has lost a lid if they don't fasten them down right. you can go to a set of newer bags off the others but you need to change both bags, thats what i did on my 01 royal blvd, i put the whole frames and bags from a 03 midnight venture. the muffler mount is differant also, the 96-01 is vertical and newer is 90 degree mount. pinwall store on e-bay has a couple of setson there last time i looked. -

i use to use tetchron all the time, every 3 tank or so and full can before oil change, run it hard for most of the tank and stay out of 5th gear, then change oil and you'll see small flakes of carbon in the oil. i use sea foam or techron as which is cheapest, both works same for me. i just meet a guy and his 98 royal star was running rough and not much power. i checked his carbs for sync and 1 was off about 4 bars. they were all jumping around a lot, so i checked all for leaks, none found. i got him to go to walmark and get some sea foam and put the can in it. i think he was a little leary of putting it in as the can don't say that, so he asked me a couple more times, which i told him he could put what it said and it would help but he needed the can full. when we go to the bike, he said he was going to put gas in before he added it so i told him that was fine but if he put some in now it would get into the carbs and start working and not hurt. he started put it in and stopped and then dumped the can in and said "we'll see". ocourse the gas station was on the other side of the building. we ran down the interstate about 20 miles, during which i went to 3rd gear and ran up to 110mph a couple of times. when we were getting off to go back i could hear it was running a lot smoother. i pulled into the gas station there just to talk with him about it and he was smilling and saying "it's running alot better". after we got back to his house it was running awhole lot better. these motors are upto being ran at higher-revs and speeds than some think, but i haven't heard of many going bad or wrecking. my 01 royal star has the smaller 28mm carbs and single valve springs and i have my dyna-tech set at 7250 rpm and wring it out and still hit the rev-limit from time to time, o'course several has told me i was going to float a valve or wreck it, but at 73600 miles it'll still run right up there with any other bike around. even out run a built harley while towing my trailer!!.

gregg, in talking to my friend, who is a very good yamaha mechanic, all bikes in us are missed tuned to meet epa standards and some are more restricted by CA with more rules. most countries around the world don't have the strict rules we have so your bike is setup a little differant. in the old days before epa rules, you would see most cars with a cream or white colored exhaust pipe and you knew it was set right as air/fuel mixture. the only car i've seen in recent yrs with a cream colored pipes are the pontiac sst's.

the 96-01 standard royals has 28mm carbs on them and do suffer from restrictions. most of us who has these bikes has opened up the filter box and k&n filters to increase the power of them. our bikes only has 1 air filter on it sitting on top of the motor under the tank, and we open the stock opening to 2 1/8 ' and drill a second 2 1/8" hole thru the box and filter( which i did), some guys cut between the 2 holes and make like a foot -shaped opening as we call it "the big-foot air mod", but i don't see any differants in it( cutting out between the 2 holes. but with all said and done, you can only put a certian amout of fuel/air mixture into a certian measured area without forcing it into it. BLOWER OR TURBO CHARGER ANYONE?? i have seen on 2 royals with a blower or turbo. one had a turbo from mr turbo in tx and costed around $4k to pipe up and the guy who owns modesto customs in ca has a standard royal with a blower and side-draft carb on it, i asked him how fast he had it and he siad he had never opened it wide open but it was fast enough for him.

it was having a canipsion fit like a little child, but you did the right thing and made him get on the trailer. it'll get better as it gets older!!LOL!!

1/4 Mile?
tazmocycle replied to TimRobertson06's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
several yrs back when i had my 01 venture with only a dyna tech 3000 set at 7,000rpms and curve 3 and my friend's 05 td with k&n, dyna 3000 set the same and kromewerks muffler's ran about 6 or 7 runs at 1/8th mile track and both ran 8.7s at 78mph. 2 screaming eagle v-rods was running 8.0 around 90mph. there was also 2 other harley dyna glides i think 1 with nitrous and other with blower was running 8.4s little over 80mph. i haven't been on a 1/4 mile track but would like to. i did outrun 3 times a 103 big dog chopper withthe same venture, he was a little pissed off because of it. lol!! -
Honest advice needed
tazmocycle replied to csf's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
there's a lot of good advice here for you but one thing you need to know before you ride the v-4. it get it power in the upper revs and it has a rev-limiter on it thats set low and you can't hurt it by hitting the rev-limiter. when you ride it whine out the gears and you'll feel the upper end power as it gets into it. i had 3 royals and only have some whine in my 01 around 50-55 mph but it's not loud. i had an 82 goldwing that had more whine in it. you can also checkout www.lakehillmotors.com which is in MS and they have really good prices which is out-the-door. you maybe able to print out their ads and see if you can use it to talk down your dealer. i've put over 100,000 miles on my bikes all together and haven't had any problem with any of them. good luck on your hunt for your bike, don. -
the efficencity is the same don't matter which way it's installed. you can slow down the blower speeds to get hotter air out of it, but you may overheat it and the high limits will start tripping out. if it has a 3 on the end of model # then on high speed in a/c mod is whats recommended. you put it on medium high for 2.5, medium low for 2 and low for 1.5 ton a/c. you set the heat on the next lower speed as hot air is easier to move than a/c heavier air. if you put it on lp gas you need to derate the btu's input by 10% so the gas/air mixture is the proper mix to burn right without sooting up. when they came out with the exhaust vent fan assited, you don't has as much problems with this as they use to when it was a natural draft system. also make sure you set the gas pressure on it as needed as this will effect how is burns. 3.5""wc for nat. and 11"wc on lp or propane. most of the gas companies has a manometer to set the pressure with and usually will if you ask while they are there setting up the tank. make sure they set the regulator on the tank when they set it up because a lot of times they assume it already set but i have seen a lot of them wayoff from the factory. i noticed i pic#3 the control and the blower speed wire are in the top right of it, one should say "cool", another says heat and the other 2 says spare or park. the 2 that say park is for the wire not being used. looks like lack is high, blue is med. high, yellow is med. low and red is low. hope this help you out, don.
