Ethanol Fuel issues!!
tazmocycle replied to af226's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
sta-bil has a new formula for the ethanol gas if you let it set up for anytime. i added the regular sta-bil to mine in 09 when i had surgery and after 5 month it wouldn't crank, when i broke down the carbs, they had a lot of white jelly looking gunk and real fine white sand look stuff in them. first time i've ever seen anything like it and i always run sea foam or techron thru them regularly. -
1998 BUB exhaust system
tazmocycle replied to vee4dfw's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
i have a 96, 97 and 01 royal star, 03 venture trike, 86 venture and 01 &06 v-star 1100s. i have always wanted a v-max! have rode several friends and the NEW one at star days last year. i love drag racing! did 9 years of street racing back in the 80s. raced my 01 venture in 04 at a harley drag day and was running 7thousanths of a secs behind 2 screaming eagle v-rod. won a $100 gift cert. after outrunning a friend's 05 royal star td. they took a pic of my bike and me in front of the sign with the time and speed but they told me later it didn't come out clear, i think they didn't want anybody see my times because i was 5th in all!!LOL!! there are several mods you can do to these motors to get the hp up and their not that costly. you can go to delphiforums.com and look up "royal star v-4 rocks" thats a forum that several of us started back several yrs ago when there wasn't much imfo on these bike. there's some good imfo on the start abd web page on differant mods to do. most of us wander between all these differant forums for more imfo to help us out. some have put the v-max cams and the 32mm carbs off the venture into their bikes for more power. i have the dyna tech 3000, rejetted 28mm carbs and opened up the airbox and it has enough power to do what i want. i do have a rearend with the v-max gears in it to put in it for when i tow my trailer behind it. i hgope to re-paint it this winter at's showing it age after 11 yrs and 75,000 miles. -
i just posted a thread in other meets section about barber's. i'm hoping to be there most of the 3 day's. pmelah from Ms is bringing his 99 royal star tues on his way to atlanta and coming back fri afternoon and staying the weekend and go to barber's. i'm going to try and fix his carbs or put a set i've got on it to get it running. let me know too if you are coming and i'll try to meet up somewhere. i'm also on vr assit if you need any help, there's a quility inn in vestavia hills about 8 miles from barber's that has been giving me a good rate on their rooms, last time it was $50 a night plus tax. if anybody want some rooms, i'll call the guy and see if i can get the same rate, he just sent me a message that they had done some upgrading. all my contact imfo is in my profile.

who synced the carbs? may need to check it again, you can add a dyna-tech 3000 to it and that may help out as you can set the timing up which helps out on the low end of power band.

1998 BUB exhaust system
tazmocycle replied to vee4dfw's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
the tips are alumium and they have always had the caps peels off, bub has replaced most sets, but seems like they never did any thing to fix it. i have a 01 royal and have the bub header pipes which is 1 7/8" od and 1 3/4" id in the 4x2 setup. i had samson fishtails on them for several years(i sold the bub mufflers out of the set, didn't want to deal with them) but now have barons nasty boys on it. i got the bub pipes because they are the biggest id of any pipes made, the stock pipes are 7/8"id on the 4x4s where they go into the mufflers on the 96-01 royals and 1 18" on the stock venture pipes. you can hear mine running with the bubs pipes and sampsom fishtails on youtube by typing in tazmocycle in the search box. they are a lot louder now with the nasty boys, than with the sampsons. you can sand off the tips and polish them with mother's polish till they look like chrome if you want to spend the time and elbow grease to do it. nobody makes the 4x4 setup for the 96-01 royals anymore, some come up for sale some times but you can use any pipes off of or for the ventures or 05 up tour deluxes, just have to make hangers for the back of mufflers or get the framing for the hard bags for the ventures. if you look at the youtube recording of tazmocycle you'll see where i have put the venture bags and framing on my blvd. i see you have a lot of billet chrome parts added to your bike, i do have several new parts for your bike if you don't have them or want to add them to it. i have the differential plug cover and the rear axle bolt covers and many something else, will have to look. hope you enjoy your ride, i have for the last 11 years and 75,000 miles, i'm hoping to get it re painted this winter and add a few more engine parts and a v-max rearend to it (11% lower gear ratio) for when i tow my trailer behind it. -
just read of larry's wreck, man hate to hear this. i thought a trike would be more visible, but if the other people aren't looking most of the time. susan and i are sending our thoughts and prayers for a good recovery for him. they can check their phone records to see if they were texting or talking on the phone. the mother shouldn't be on the phone, as she is responsible for what he does while driving! i watch a show on tv called people's law where lawers address differant section of law and court cases and they say that both sides can check the driving records, car and big rig's black box and camera's that's about everywhere now. it can change the outcome of most cases. when i had a wreck and the other truck kept going they were looking around the area for cameras that might have recorded it, but there weren't any. hope for a quick recovery and a return to riding if he wants to.

many thanks to all for your good will to us. susan and i are doing ok as we have had a long time to get ready for this. her sister has been taking care of her mothr all this time with a few breaks when we went and stayed with her mother to give her a break. we are hoping she can deal with the enplanted rountine she was in providing care to her mother on a daily basis, her and susan did get up during the last few night to check on her, thats how entrenched it is. today we visited susan's son, his wife and our grandson most of the day on his father-in-law's large farm. her and her sister bonnie did enjoy treasure hunting for old farming relics and arrow-heads with metal detectors. drew, our granson even found a couple of shiny new quarters hiden in the dirt by "papa don"! we're going back this weekend, after having to return to work, to help clean out all that's left of her medical equiptment. her other sister lives just a few miles away and will keep a check on her for us till then. her mother is a lot better off now, we know, as her medical condition was at the very bottom for the last yr or so. so again, we want to thank you all for the thoughts and prayers on behalf of the family during this time.

starting in 1996 yamaha came out with the royal star, 1300cc motor,4-cyls, 4- 28mm carbs, single spring valves, 4th and 5th gears are higher ratio speed gears or overdrives. they made these bike till 2001. in 1999 yamaha took the 1300cc motor put a counter-balancer, larger cams, double valve springs, 4- 32mm carbs and put it into the venture touring bike, called it a royal star venture. in late 2004 they put the new venture motor into the royal star tour deluxe for 2005. they quit making the tour deluxe and keep saying they're going to redo their touring bike but hasn't done anything yet. the 1996- 2001 royal stars has about 76hp and the 99-present venture and td has 98hp. lot of us who's got the 96-01 royal stars has done a few mods on them to bring more power to these motors.

well i can tell you that all 96-2001 28mm carbs will work on your bike. as it happen i have a couple of set of 28mm carb and i have reworked a couple of set for guys needing. right now i just swap for a set that suppose to be in great shape andpaul is waiting to get his hand on them for his bike but if you can send me $300.00, i'll let you have them right now!!! LOL!! just kidding paul!!. i haven't had any time yet to go thru these yet but brad said he cleaned them up and put them in a ziploc bag. he didn't remember what jets are in them, so i'm needing to look into that, if they have been up-jetted may need to open up your airbox or i can put the oem jets back in. i think you would like the up-jetted as they give a little more power to the motor. joe, you can spray a lot of wd40 or rust buster on your screws and work them in and out till they get loosen up to work. there's a guy on delphiforums.com "royal star v-4 rocks" that has gotten stuck screws out of carbs, if you need to go that route. i'll try to help you out if possible on your carbs as i get time, just let me know, don.

well as some of you know, susan's mom has been fighting her bout with cancer for about 4 yrs, last 3 not having much of a life, gave up on friday morning. we knew it was coming but still a hard hit on her family. visitation is sun evening from 6-8pm and graveside service monday at 2pm. they've had all the services set up 4 yrs ago but just had to set the times, a great relief at this time for the family. looks like all the family will be here for the services. we thank all for their support thru these times.

sorry to hear you're in pain! susan stepped off her sister's back step and fractured her left angle. she keep putting off going to the dr for 3 weeks and now she having physical therphry to loosen it up as she's been walking on her toes. therphist said she also pulled some ligament and her toes are turned almost straight up with her foot on the floor. it's going to be a long road to get it back right. do what the doc says and get well soon.

96 Royal Star carb plugs...
tazmocycle replied to SCBabyDuck's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
if they are tight be really careful screwing them. make sure the tip on the screwdriver is not too big as it will cut into the alumium and mess up the threads. put some wd40 on them to help. if you screw them in, count the turns and then take them all the way out ccw and use a hacksaw blade and cut a good deep slot in them to almost where the threads starts. put a little grease on the threads and turn them back in cw till the motor starts to miss and then turn back out 1/2 turn. that should be the best setting, i hadn't messed with mine for several yrs and had them set at 3 1/2 turns, after taking them out and doing this, i've got mine set at 1 1/2 turns now and it's running great. most of all the popping is gone and it runs a lot smoother. -
paul if you send the family up here put the carbs in the trunk!! i get them fixed for you while their here!. was going to eureka springs but looks like it's going up the middle. have to wait and see were it hits. may have to go east to Nc for weekend.

the reason the idle goes up and down while you are adjusting the screws is that you are pushng on the throttle shafts that the throttle cables pulls. it's best to wiggle the throttle after you adjust the screws so it sets back down after pushing on them, some problems i think is caused by getting in a hurry. i put josh's set back together after the bike shop warped them all up. put them on sunday and got his back running good, may need to recheck them after he runs them a few weeks. i shot a little video of checking the float heights after setting them a little over 9mms, itried to show my calipher and the reading but the camera wouldn't folcus on it. i'll try and put it on here, haven't put a video on here yet, see what i can do.

do you need new clutch plates or is it slipping? some have had trouble with slipping and put a second star clutch spring or go to barnett springs. most time the plates are still in good condition as well as the steel plates.

i usually shift out of 3rd at 100mph, use 4th sometimes and rarley use 5th gear.

RSTD Overdrive gearing
tazmocycle replied to Davo's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
4th and 5th is a big jump up from 3rd, i usually don't go to 4th unless i'm going over 70 mph. 5th i use less unless i'm on interstate, pretty level road and over 75mph. if i'm pulling my trailer, i stay out of 5th at any speed and use 3rd and 4th most of the time. the engine will start to feel like it's lugging if you get too low in speed. many of us put in a dyna-tech 3000 to pick up the power to get to use the higher gears. some also put in the v-max gears which is 11% lower gear ratio and picks the rpms up so you can use 4th and 5th gears at lower speeds. you can look at the history section of the forum and see the gear ratios on all the ventures and royal stars. when you are out riding, try winding out the gears a little more and you'll see where the power band kicks in and it don't hurt to hit the rev-limiter, that way you know where you can go before you have to shift out. the rev limiters are set pretty low(5800-6200) as what these motors can do around 8k( thats the top limit you can set on the dyna-tech 3000). -
motor could be from $50 to 125.$500 to$750, that about what our company get to install one. we give a 1yr warrenty on our work. the company tries tp get about 500% markup so if we have to go back and replace it during the 1 yr warranty we still make money. it's bad but most companies now-a-days goes by flat rate pricing, where a consulting company does a survey of the area and see what most companies charge and set a price for you. sometimes the tech will give a really high estermate so as to try and sell you a new furnace, they make sell bonusis. thats why they don't let me do service call because i try and help folk out by giving some discount or $50 gift card we use to help sell the jobs. i mostly do installing of job and some commercial job nobody else can't do. if you can do some repairs you can problly replace it yourself. look to see if there's a johnstone supply near you, they'll have the motor. you can call me if you think you might want to try and replace it and i'll talk you thru it. don my phone #s are in my member imfo.
