the '96-'01 standard royal stars are de-tuned way more than the venture and 05- present rstd, they have a tendentic to carbon-up which can cause them to run ruff. http://forums.delphiforums.com/royalstar/start is a forum started by several of us off the isra site that has these models. you need to go over there and look on the start page and read the tech notes on doing the techron flush out to get rid of the carbon that might be cause your problem. these bike will run very well without out any mods done to them, but there is several mods you can do to help pep it up and run great. i'm taz, a1ammoniaman over there. after reading up feel free to ask Qs if you want. there is several of us "royal riders on this forum too, there's a lot of good folks and info on all the web sites.hope this helps don.

the ride up to mt. mitchell is a good ride to do along the blue ridge. we can also do another ride to the wheels thru time museum so those that didn't make it can go. there's a lot of roads to be ridden all over that area. looking foward to it.

A newbie with questions
tazmocycle replied to WIKD's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
welcome, thats want we are here for. if you can swing it aug 15-19 in north Ga we are having the tail of the dragon rally, you are quite welcome to come on up there and see a wide varity of ventures and other bikes. you can see all the differant modes of add-ons and acessories you can add to your bike. there will also be garage time where members will work on their bike and are willing to pass on their knowledge to others. some acessories and people to install them will also be there. ther was a post of some coming out of fla to the rally and asking if others was wanting to join them. click on search in toolbar and enter what you are looking for, set a time back for 3 months and click on search at bottom, and it should bring them up as a list. look in the rally section on left of page and then click on tail of the dragon for imfo. i think there are still rooms available, don -
Requesting Dyna 3000 advice
tazmocycle replied to bobo's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
the one for venture and tour deluxe is the same for all years 99-07 the only differant one is for the 96-01 royal stars standard bike. they don't have the cruise control, i think thats the differance in the 2 dyna. -
RMSportMax.com 1-610-509-VMAX(8629 check with john furber here and ask about help, they have some differant things to help out. they deal with mostly v-maxs. http://vmaxoutlaw.com/main.html lot of imfo here too. got a lot of wild pics of v-maxs.

the mufflers are a little shorter on the 96-01 std royals. the ventures are about 2" longer. i bought a set of sampson fishtail for mine and the mounting bracket was strait up and not bent over at a 90% angle like the venture's. i tried to put my sampson's on my 01 venture and they hit the saddlebags, they needed to be about 2" LONGER TO BE RIGHT. but as far as the inside diameter of the muffler, it's the same size. the header pipes on the 96-01 is about 7/8" id vs the venture is 1 1/8" id. bubs pipes that i have on mine is 1 3/4" id giving it a deeper rumble like h-pipes on a mustang if you've heard that. you can watch e-bay and find some slip-on there sometimes.

exhaust popping
tazmocycle replied to foundryratjim's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
the reason you are getting popback on these bike are because they are retarded timing. you have 2 set of coils, firing 4 cyls, 1&3- 2&4 fires together. one is at compression stroke and firing and the other is at exhaust stroke and firing. thus there is unburnt gas in the exhaust pipes while decellating which lites up causing the poping. you can install the dyna tech 3000 on them and it will take almost all of it out. back in the 70s, holly came out with a ecomomaster carb that shut off all gas to cylinders when you let off the throttle to save gas. i had one on my '75 monte carlo and the fuel ecom went from 15mpg to 19mpg. on the fuel injected bike i think it cut off the gas on decel. only if yamaha would inject the royalls!!!! -
they gave you the wrong bar, that probly fit the earlier models of td(96-01) or as don said a venture, the newer tds(05-now) has the welded-on nut to bolt the headlite to. parts guys are always getting it wrong. i bought a set of carb cover for my 01 rstd and they are for the newer one, ther's a differance. best thing i found, is to get the yamaha accessories catalog and look up what you want and point it out to them and double check it when they order and give it to you.

i was told by a bike mechanic that yamalube oil is half syn and half petrobase oil. i took my wife's bike to him for 500 mle service and he asked if i wanted reg or syn in it and i told him i was told not to put syn till at least 4,000 miles on the bike. so he put yamalube back in it, which i'm doing the oil change the next time and putting mobil syn like all my other bike, 50,000 miles on my 01 and no trouble yet.

some where i read that all foriegn made bikes are off by 8-10% in their readings. harley keeps their down to 2-3% of range. my bike has always been off, and it reads higher. when i've gone thru the roadside speed decters it always shows a lower speed than my spedo.around 60 on speedo the decter shows 55, so i always run about 5 mph faster on speedo and never got a ticket yet.

i got the best ride and wear out of the avons, had a lot of trouble out of the dunlops, front tire blowed(several people said same thing) up in the middle and got wobbley in about 6,000 miles. i got about 25,000 miles out of avon on front, 9k( did a lot of burnouts), 12k and 18k out of 3 back tires. ran a 180 on rear but it did rub with low air and heavy weight. ran a 170 with out any rubbing, but had a 170 metzler rub bad but stopped with more air pressure in it(just ran it used about 2k to get me thru riding season). it's differant for each person and their riding style.
