Which shop manual is the one to use?
MiCarl replied to slickster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'll second getting a paper book if you're doing your own work. Rarely are the pages in a service manual used sequentially. It takes a long time to "flip" through a PDF where a paper book is pretty simple. -
I prefer a close nipple. To each his own.

Whatever they're paid, it isn't enough.

Interestingly they aren't that far off. The "electronic correspondence machine" is a bit redundant though. I noticed that when the husband reviews his banking it sure looks like a picture of a printed statement.

What headset you get will depend on your helmet. J&M makes a couple almost reasonably priced headsets. They're at the bottom of THIS page. My wife and I use the full face style which currently sells for $70. We're very happy with them. I do need to warn you that the microphone is rather large and finding a place in our chin bars deep enough for it was a challenge. The link is to Sierra Electronics. We bought ours there. While we didn't need to contact them I've heard from others that they are very helpful if you have questions etc.

High Hot Idle
MiCarl replied to Prairiehammer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You are probably lean. Lean mixture burns better hot than cold so idle climbs as engine warms up. If you have no air leaks it'll be the carburetors. The fact that the mixture screws have no effect is an indicator here. Likely the idle jets or passages are plugged and you've compensated by having the idle stop screw in too far thus "idling" on the main jets - which the mixture screws do not affect. You need to use carburetor cleaner (spray can) and compressed air to make sure every last passage and jet is open. Also, the air holes in the side of the pilot jet need to be clear. While you have them off fix the float level. -
I think it has to do with the fact that there aren't many "Service Stations" anymore. Those places had a compressor for use by the mechanics and simply hung a hose on the side of the building. Now that we buy gasoline at a "Convenience Store" the only compressor on the premises is that slow coin operated contraption.

1984 Venture Royale Radio Control.
MiCarl replied to BreezyCricket's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
It's been awhile since I had one open, but I believe it's all soldered to 1 or 2 boards (boards connected by ribbon cable). You should have that plus a button or knob for each hole in the housing. -
Hey mlew, glad to see you finally made it here. For OEM parts I like Cycle Parts Nation. I get all my OEM parts from them and it usually takes about a week. They're here in Michigan so it might be a couple days longer to NC. For aftermarket parts try Thunder Valley Powersports. Use the coupon code VentureRider at checkout to get 15% off. (shameless self promotion:whistling:)

As cecdoo stated - it's not water cooled so it's not an X. I'm not sure motoverse will distinguish as they're both XJ700s The model (if it's an 86) will be XJ700S.

I have to put my .02 on something cutting it. That's a good size gap all by itself. Every cracked tire I've seen was more like Earl's - the cracks stay small until there are a lot of them.

Didn't realize you were thinking about bringing it home........ The internet community for them is at xjbikes.com. In particular, there is a guy there that specializes in new and used parts for them.

In 85 the Maxim was only available in the U.S. in 700 cc models. Is this a Canadian bike or is the year wrong? The 85 XJ700 Maxim was air cooled. There was also a water cooled version, the XJ700 Maxim X. Two years ago I sold a very good 82 Maxim 650 for $1300. Took me a long time to get it. I'd say 1,000 - 1,200 for a 700 Maxim. Add 2-300 for a Maxim X. If he can dig in and wait for the right buyer he might get a bit more.

If the Chevron is pure gasoline and the Maverick has ethanol blended in you'd expect fewer miles/gallon on the "gasohol". Don't know about there, but here in Michigan they apparently can go to 10% ethanol without labeling it.

I wouldn't ride it. I wouldn't take it up the hill anymore to the guy that seemed competent either. -

What are you basing the fan not working on? Is the motorcycle overheating? The fan on mine does not kick on until the temp gauge is almost in the red. I believe this is normal. I don't think mine has ever come on when my speed was above 5mph. -
The one here is very poorly run. At any time half the slots for oil are empty. Sometimes though they've pulled all the Rotella T (conventional or synthetic) to make a big display in the isle or on an end cap. I always double check for that. FWIW I use the SuperTech 15w40 in the 89. So far real happy with it ($9/gallon).

Clean the hole real good and get some gasoline resistant epoxy in there. Won't be pretty but it'll be usable. Enjoy the weekend then pursue a permanent fix at your leisure.

Next time use the "good" profanity right away, instead of taking two days to get the job done. It just doesn't pay to be stingy with the four letter words.

I always thought that spring was just an extra part. Glad to know it has a purpose!
