About 84K. Barely broke in. I did a compression test on it a this winter when I was setting the valve lash. All four cylinders the same and right at spec (which I think is 172psi).

Carb Synch with new gauges
MiCarl replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I use the same set. I agree they need to flutter just a bit. If they ain't moving they're stuck. You're going to want to replace the vacuum hoses that came with them. By the 3rd use they'll start to split. Mine need to be re calibrated periodically. I hook them to a manifold and along with a vacuum pump from a mity vac type brake bleeder. I adjust them so they all match at 10" Hg. -
386 is what the owners and service manuals say. My last bike was a 650 Yamaha which was rated for close to 500. I think (nobody knows SWMBO's true weight) that we probably exceed 500 when we're two up with the required minimum female essentials in the luggage. I'm also quite confident that a previous owner had upgraded the rear spring - there is a Progressive Suspension sticker on the hitch and ours stands about 1" taller than a stock Venture. We ride with a couple that is probably 100 lbs. heavier than us. They had trouble with their 83 bottoming out until they put a Progressive spring on it. I'm mostly concerned about your length. When you go look again pay attention to how your legs are bent and make sure you'll be comfortable for long rides. If it doesn't have highway pegs you can rest your ankles on the case guards to get a feel for how you'd be spread if you add them later. Dan's right, no need to educate the dealer about the air suspension. When you look at it again turn the key to ACC and fiddle with the CB. The suspension control module is just ahead of it. When you first switch to ACC the display on the control module should light all its elements. Then it should just display the word AUTO and 0 psi. If it does that the stuff in the trunk is probably spares. If it shows E1 or E4 it is probably noticing that the compressor is in the trunk. If it shows E5 the control module has a fault.

A couple thoughts for you: 1 - You could very well find the foot position cramped. I'm 6'0 with a 32 inseam and it's pretty tight. Based on your height and spine problems this could be a problem. Highway pegs require you to spread your legs around the fairing lowers which I find gets old too. 2 - The listed maximum load (passenger, cargo, accessories) is only 386 lbs. Many of us go over that, the question is how much you can get away with. You're definitely going to want a rear tire with a high load rating.

It's not clear what you are asking. Are you buying a motorcycle here and riding home? If so, it appears you do not need a plate in Michigan Secretary of State Web Site. Michigan also offers a 30 day or 60 day tag. It is not clear to me if you can get one as a non resident. Looks like the temp tag would cost $30 which is more than the annual plate LINK.

Welcome. Most mechanical parts are pretty easy to come by. A lot of the plastic is only available used and can get into a lot of money. The engine/transmission is pretty durable so you're unlikely to ever get into anything major there. It's possible that what is in the trunk is spare parts. The suspension system only operates with the key in the "ACC" position. If you haven't tried that you might check to see. Depending on how it was stored your backfiring may mean that the carbs need to be gone through. $2500 is probably a reasonable price if the suspension air works and the motorcycle appearance is fair. If the suspension really doesn't work you could be getting into a can of worms. Good luck!

It's important to remember that while the devastation is huge it isn't the whole country. Apparently the quake did relatively little damage but the resulting Tsunami did lots of damage along the shore in the North East. Anything more than 50 feet or so above sea level wouldn't have been damaged by the Tsunami. I haven't seen any reports talking about damage to manufacturing capacity. It's quite possible that there wasn't a lot of damage to manufacturing plants. I also haven't heard any reports about shipping capacity. Any ports in the area or along rivers near the North East coast are probably severely damaged. Repair to the ports and near shore transportation infrastructure supporting them will take years. If there weren't a lot of major ports in the area the shipping can probably be moved to unaffected regions. It'd be inconvenient and cost some money but probably not be crippling. It's quite clear that three or more nuclear power plants have been destroyed. This is a lot of electrical generating capacity that will take years (decades?) to replace. Unless they had a lot of extra capacity (which I doubt) this is likely to be their major economic problem.

Rear end trouble...need advice HELP
MiCarl replied to CMIKE's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yamaha doesn't sell the ring or pinion as individual parts. If the pinion is bad they'll replace the whole final drive. If it's just the bearing they'll replace that. -

If you can feel slack it's too loose. -
Below the word Amplifier is one button. It's to the right up against the intercom volume/tone control knobs. On the left side toward the volume control knob is a noise sensor which is used by the auto volume sensor (the sensitivity control is around the volume knob. The noise sensor has a weatherproof cover that is often broken. That right hand button switches the radio and CB output between the speakers and headsets. If it's switched to headset (there is a LED above it that should light if it's switched to headset) nothing will come out the speakers. The intercom always goes to the headsets. If that headset light is lit it's likely your problem. Push the button to turn the light off. If the light won't turn off you'll need to clean the switch. If the amp thinks there is a tape in the deck it won't play the radio. The CB should override both the tape deck and the radio. Turn the squelch all the way down on the CB to make sure you are receiving noise to check for this condition. It's also possible the speakers are bad or unplugged. You can reach the speaker plugs by pulling the front turn signals. The amp is in the left fairing below the radio. That's about the last place you should look for the problem though.

1000 must just be one city. There are four trains flat out missing. My impression is that trains in Japan do not run empty. CNN Impossible to even comprehend how much energy must be involved in moving a piece of real estate the size of Japan 8 feet.

this made me sick.....glad Im not close ....

Absolutely. It's about the attention. If everyone would ignore them they'd crawl back under their rocks. -
You live "up North" in Canada. Your winter is supposed to be long!

and clearly the groundhog was/is on crack. This would make a gorgeous Christmas morning though. Please folks, be careful what you give to the prognosticating rodent.

You can put it in 5th gear and stand on the rear brake. Save the price of the tool.

Valve adjustment kit
MiCarl replied to hi-plainsdrifter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
As Dingy said, it's be darn tough to do on a Venture engine. It's often used on the 2 valve inline fours where you can actually see all the valves through the spark plug hole, which is also usually easier to get your fingers to than a Venture. One problem people have is with the valve cutting the zip tie and you end up with a piece of it in the cylinder. What seems to work better is a piece of 12GA insulated wire, it holds its shape and doesn't get cut. It does need to be trimmed after a few valves because the insulation gets chewed up.- 21 replies

If you go to the tech library you can find the wiring diagrams Dingy did for the 1st gen. From that you can get the wire colors for the tail, brake and turn signal lights. All the wires pass under the seat above the gas tank. You'll need to make a pigtail to go down near your hitch. To run the separate brake/turn signals you will need a 5 wire connector. I assume since your trailer has amber signals it has a five wire connector on it. You'll need to match that connector at a trailer supply place. I recommend you use relays to control the trailer lights - powering them by a separate fused lead from the battery. This will make sure you don't overload the motorcycle circuits and prevent the load from interfering with the diagnostic functions on the CMS. I put all my relays in a project box from RadioShack, filled it with epoxy to protect them and placed it on top of the fender behind the seat, below the passenger back rest.

It doesn't have to be cold for that to happen. I think it's from the thing being stored on its side. You can usually get the beads to grab air by tightening a ratchet strap around the circumference of the tire. Inflating without the valve in also can help move enough air to get it started. Guys in shop should know these tricks.

antenna rapair and a ??
MiCarl replied to painterman67's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Likely won't burn up the CB but will probably give you a goofy SWR and poor performance. It's been a long time since I've been into the CB stuff but I seem to recall that they need to be at least 1/4 wave length apart (about 8 feet) to work properly. If you want the twin antenna look either run the radio to the extra or leave it unattached. Of course you could fab up some really long mounting brackets...... -
Where to get proper feller guages
MiCarl replied to muaymendez1's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Most metric gauges I've seen don't go small enough to do Venture valves. I did just recently see a set that went small enough - I think in the Snap-On catalog. Gonna be pricey. I use an inch set that has 0.0015, 0.001 then increments of 1/1000". It's got the metric values marked on it too. I've had it forever and there is no brand on it so I probably picked it up at an auto parts store. -
Hello, Little help needed with my 83
MiCarl replied to Reddog170's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Welcome, $1,000 is about right with new slides, floats etc. It appears you're doing it yourself so you should be less than half that. From your pictures it's clear you got the air box out so you're halfway there. Pretty much all that's left is to disconnect the cables, remove the clamps at the carb holders and lift the set out. You're going to have to split the rack into left and right halves to get the float bowls off. After that they're pretty much just like any other carburetor. When I had my carburetors off I set the float levels before reassembling the full rack. Have a look at the carburetor holders to make sure there are no leaks. Also check the slide diaphragms for pin holes. That breather hose that goes up to the air box is a real bear to get on. You might want to put a new stretchier one in there when you put it back together. I sell aftermarket parts - Thunder Valley. If you pay your $12 and become a supporting member I'll give you a coupon code that will knock 15% off the order. Better get busy. Riding season is soon (we hope).- 47 replies

Why is a relay necessary for driving lights
MiCarl replied to fwbpastor's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well said. In summary - Your switch will last a lot longer if you use a relay. -
I think that's so the green line tech doesn't have an excuse for putting the tire on the wrong way.
-
One of the earlier posts quoted Metzeler as saying it's not permissible to mount a front tire in the rear position. Typically, front tires have a much lower load rating than rear. I wonder if that is the issue.....
