Nothing cheap at K&L, but some stuff (XVZ valve shim tool) cannot be found anywhere else. I use the HF lift Don is considering in the shop. One of its big advantages is it's low which is easier to load a bike on, especially backwards (which is how you change a front tire!). I like the hydraulic and find it easier to control than the air lifts I've used. You do get a lot of leg exercise running I bike up - it's not hard but takes about 60 pumps of the pedal. One of the big drawbacks is that there is a support at the rear edge of the table that runs under the trap door. So when the trap door is pulled the wheel has to go straight down (or even forward a bit) rather than swinging out the rear. I know I've had a 2nd gen on the lift, but I can't remember doing tires. I don't recall it being so far rearward that I wouldn't be able to do a tire. I have tires sitting there waiting for a 2nd gen to come in so if I can't I'm going to be in trouble. I have done 1st gen tires on it. The front wheel stop is adjustable and I have mine in the farthest forward position. If it's not all the way forward you're not going to get a large bike on. The holes for the tie down U bolts are at the center of the table. If you tie one down there you're not going to change tires. I re-drilled for the U bolts up by the clamp. At $300 I think it's a good value (I think I had a coupon +20% and got mine for closer to $200). At $500 I'd pop the extra $175 for THIS.

I thought about adding one for the shop. Be very handy for tire and oil changes. Take up lots less space than a lift. Problem I see though is most bikes are either wrapped in plastic or have the pipes below the frame. That's why Carbon One makes lift adapters for the Venture. Thought about making sliding saddles for it to reach up past pipes to the frame but in the end decided it was getting too impractical.

Yeah, use the shade tree method. You'll spend all day adding and subtracting angles and never get it right trying to follow the manual. It is possible for it to be too tight to take a gauge (even a thin one). If it's too tight to get a gauge in (you should try at least a .002" gauge) with the lobe pointing away from the valve they you'll need to replace with a thinner shim and re-measure. -
I know somebody that has an official state issued motorcycle plate with the handicap symbol........... As Randy said, people here go into other states and surely don't carry a permit for each one. I'd think that if the permit is issued by the same government as the plates you'd be all set.

Be interesting to see a comparison to 2006. 2010 was a dismal year. Looks like scooters are selling well.

If it's a problem in the final the sound should change under load (acceleration) vs. coasting. If it's constant independent of accel/decel it's more likely to be a wheel bearing. The input shaft on these finals (actually the shaft on the pinion gear) is prone to breakage. When mine broke it was right at the nut that holds the coupler to the pinion shaft and preloads the pinion bearing. That is outside the oil seal so there was no debris in the oil, just noise from the extra lash created by the looseness in the assembly. That noise will change depending on acceleration or coasting.

Yeah, just cut it off the harness (leave about an inch of wire on the plug) and take it to the auto parts store. They'll have one. Use the old plug as your guide to which wire connects where (that's why you leave an inch of wire on it)

If you start now you can push it to Oberlin in time for MD. I wonder if it wouldn't have been easier to just bolt luggage onto a V-Max. -
Cruise problem with 89 VR

It's unclear from your post if the resume light turns on when you power the cruise up or when you press the "SET/DECEL" button. When you power the unit up all the lights should come on. Then SET and RESUME lights should turn off after a few seconds. If the RESUME light is staying on at power up there is probably a fault in the controller. If the unit powers up normally and the RESUME light comes on immediately when you press the "SET/DECEL" button then you probably have a problem with the clutch or brake switch (or connections to them). All those switches will disengage the cruise and turn on the RESUME light. -
What the last two guys said. I use brake clean to get the oil off. That grommet we're speaking of goes into a U shaped cut out in the alternator cover. The open end of the U faces the engine case. On my Venture that grommet had shrunk to where it didn't fill the open end of the U and still leaked along the case. Make sure you look for that. The way I fixed mine was to put a bead of RTV on the flat face of the grommet and install the cover finger tight, then torqued it after an hour. This all will be pretty obvious after you get in there.

You should leave the diaphragm covers on, you problem isn't the diaphragm. Back vibrator sounds like a good idea to rattle any stuck floats loose though...... Not a bad idea. Be easier to do in 5th gear. Don't forget the proper application of profanity either!

Ideally you'd tap on the float bowls. They're kind of hard to get to with the carburetors installed though. I'd just rap on the diaphragm covers - it'll vibrate the whole carb.

I agree that it is difficult to find something in the member vendor section unless you know who is selling and where to look. For that matter, I'd have to to some hunting and clicking to find my own ads. Organizationally I think it'd be better if it was organized by make -> model -> year -> part type than by vendor. I think part of the problem is you're trying to use the classified ad software to support what is in actuality a marketplace. I use Zen Cart for my stores. My hosting provider offers it and several similar applications as part of the hosting package. Organizationally it would work better than your classified software. A draw back is it doesn't support payments to multiple vendors in the stock configuration. It does have a showcase mode where you can't actually purchase anything, just see the items. The item descriptions could include a link to make the actual purchase... Another problem is someone would have to administer it or we'd have to let all the vendors administrate and trust them not to mess up each others' stuff. I'd be willing to administrate it, but couldn't work on it until after the season here is over (November or so). I could also host it, but it wouldn't have a Venturerider.org domain name.

I've got a V-Max here that had a similar problem. Draining the offending carburetor and refilling cleared it up. In the case of the V-Max it had dumped enough fuel into the cylinder to hydro-lock the engine. If it had fired one of the other cylinders it could have led to severe engine damage. I'd pull all the plugs and ground the plug leads first time I cranked it. That way any fuel in the cylinders will be pushed out the plug holes. Put a rag over each plug hole so it doesn't throw gasoline everywhere.

It's not as simple as you might think. The load rating is the amount of weight it'll carry at the rated speed (H=130MPH) for some amount of time (amount of time is unspecified, but is probably not indefinite). Of course there are other elements on the motorcycle that also have maximum capacities. Those capacities may be lower than the tire capacities. Your owners manual will have the maximum load rating for your motorcycle. -

Carb/jet cleaning without pulling carbs

I suggest you keep the tank full. If there is air in it you can get condensation that will cause rust. I'm also not sure it's a good idea to mix chemicals. Personally I put Sta-bil in everything that is going to sit for more than a couple weeks. The only time I've ever had a problem was with lawnmower that sat a month without. -
