They're both the same. I could have worded mine more clearly: I agree with Tearless Tom. It should be turned so it rotates the correct direction. His reason for doing so is correct. I thought the question was whether it would separate if it was run the correct direction after a period of running backward. I would take it back and have them make it right.

It shouldn't hurt it to turn it around. The problem with changing rotation direction on passenger car tires is specific to radials. Way back in the old days when cars had bias ply tires (which the D404 is) we rotated them side to side too. I'd take it back to the clowns that put it on backwards and throw a hissy fit.

Glad you stayed dry. We got into rain just a few miles South of Don's. We were following a thundershower East toward Akron watching lots of cloud to ground lightning. After the hay wagon pulled off the road we were forced to catch up with it. Decided to pull off for a 20 minute break and let it get past our final destination West of Akron. If I'd known there was Ice Cream left we would have lingered a bit longer.... As always great to see everyone!

I suppose you could but you'd have to remove or drain the tank, pull the battery, drain the oil and probably do something about the coolant overflow. Then there is worrying about the fairings, mirrors etc. By the time you go through the hassle you'd probably wish you'd taken it to someone with a lift or jack.

Looks like we'll be riding alone then...... Just as well. Probably be really hungover from all the beer I'm having by proxy Friday night. -
Venture Royale carburetor questions
MiCarl replied to unwind80's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You also might try a bit of heat on the jet block. The brass has a similar coefficient of thermal expansion to the aluminum but the heat might soften any varnish gluing them together. -
Many of the things on that list don't apply to the 86 and later. In particular the frame cracking, 2nd gear and stator overheating should not be of concern. Some additions: Plastic pieces are getting scarce and expensive when they can be had. There is occasionally a problem with the pinion gear and middle gear. The nut that holds the bearing pre-load can snap off the respective shafts. The motorcycle will still go though so it may not be apparent. I had a pinion snap and the bearing made a groan when coasting. The middle gear should be similar, but it might be under load rather than coasting. Listen for any change in drivetrain sound between accelerating and coasting. These are major fixes. There is a whistle sound from the primary gear set. If you poke around here you'll see some 2nd gen (96+) owners find it very bothersome. The sound is inherent in the straight cut gears used and is entirely normal. Listen for it though and make sure it isn't going to annoy you. Mine sounds like crickets at about 3K RPM, other people call it a whine. Other than those things it's just like any other older bike. You need to have a close look at maintenance items (tires, brake and clutch fluid, etc.). The plug between the stator and the bike wiring harness often overheats and fails. It's an easy fix. If you buy you might ask here how to check/maintain/repair it.

The better half and I will depart the Western 'burbs of Detroit 8:00AM Saturday for Maintenance Day. We'll leave Stony Ridge Ohio about 9:30 and travel across Ohio 20 to Oberlin. Anyone from SE Michigan or NW Ohio going Saturday AM that wants to ride together?

I was selling a minivan for my Father-in-law and wasn't having much luck with Craigslist. I decided to look and see what eBay would charge. Turns out eBay Motors has something called a "local classified" that will show your ad in a 200 mile radius for no fees whatsoever. It also shows potential buyers the CarFax for free. I sold it in about a day to a guy well outside the normal craigslist area. Got a premium price for it too. You might check and see if you can list a motorcycle that way.

I give you ladies a lot of credit for riding pillion (anybody want to tell me how to pronounce that word?). I don't think there is anybody I trust enough to do that myself.

Venture Royale carburetor questions
MiCarl replied to unwind80's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On the 83 that jet is a 42.5, so don't panic when you read it and it's not 37.5. It's got air bleed holes in the sides. It's gotta come out. A good fitting screwdriver is important. Let it soak with penetrating oil for awhile. That's the guy. It's not an air or fuel screw, although it behaves similarly to a fuel screw - out is richer. I remove the caps by drilling them with a 1/8" drill then screwing a drywall screw into them. I use pliers to wiggle and pull on the drywall screw. You have to use a light touch when drilling because the screws are brass and if you're laying into it you can ruin the screw slot. A nice sharp bit with little pressure is the way to go, and let go of the trigger the instant it breaks through. I use an automatic center punch to put a mark on the carburetor body in line with the screw slot. A scribe or needle file will also work. You cannot use a pencil or marker because the carb cleaner will remove them. Then you screw in gently noting how many turns until it bottoms and record the number. When you reinstall you bottom lightly and back out the number of turns you counted (WRITE IT DOWN AND KEEP IT) and align the screw slot with your mark. The end of that screw is a needle. If you over tighten it it will wedge on the sides and snap off. If that happens the carburetor is junk. I use just 2 fingers on the screwdriver to run them down. If you are using your wrist you can over torque them without realizing it. Under that screw is a spring, then a very small flat washer, then a small o-ring. The spring is easy to get out but the washer and o-ring are probably stuck. I made a small hook by soldering a bristle from a wire brush to a piece of electrical wire. Then I put a 90 degree bend about 1mm from the end of the bristle. It takes some digging. When you reassemble put the spring, washer and o-ring on the screw. The o-ring will hold it all together while you put the screw back in. If you just drop the pieces down the hole they'll never line up properly. You also need to set the float levels. Your service manual will detail how to do that. If you don't have a service manual stop until you get one. -
What greese for the front axel?

It's hard to get off everything. Somehow I've got a permanent dab of it centered on the back of my leather riding jacket. -
Venture Royale carburetor questions
MiCarl replied to unwind80's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
A carb soak won't do the trick. You need to completely disassemble and spray cleaner and compressed air through every passage. The emulsion tubes need to be removed and cleaned and make sure that every orifice is open. The rubber plugs for the jet block are still available, I just had to replace a set of them. The pilot screws need to be gently turned in, counting how many turns and fractions of turns, until they bottom. Then they need to be removed, the spring washer and o-ring under them need to come out, and those passages need to be blown with spray carb cleaner and compressed air. Upon reassembly you lightly seat the pilot screws and back them out to the count you made previously. A carb soak is a very bad idea because it ruins rubber. There are rubber seals on the butterfly shafts that are not supposed to be removable. If they get damaged you are in a world of hurt. -
What greese for the front axel?
MiCarl replied to BigD's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I usually put a little anti seize compound on them. Any general purpose grease should also be fine. As pointed out, it's only to ensure you can remove the axle next time. -
Carb Synch Cold Hot Weather...
MiCarl replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Temperature shouldn't affect the sync. If you're rich it'll show up more in warm temps than cooler. Ever mess with the mixture screws? Air filter clean? -
Something I heard on the radio today reminded me: A local attorney sued one of the municipalities about their roundabouts. Apparently they are death traps for the blind (crossing the street).

Unplugging the electrical connector is guaranteed not to cause any future oil leaks at the anti-dive. If the seals are leaking there is a good chance the bushings are shot. If they are new seals won't last long. You'll be well ahead if you separate the tubes and replace the bushings.

1st Gen was made 1983 - 1993 and is a "sport tourer". It's styled a lot like GoldWings from the same era. The rider foot position is below the hips to improve control (the sport part). The fairing is mounted to the frame and does not move with the bars. The 2nd gen is the redesigned model (1999 + I think) that has cruiser styling and a more forward rider foot location. The fairing is mounted to the triple tree and turns with the bars. The drive line on the two are very similar. It's the same basic engine. The 2nd gen has higher gearing which is somewhat offset by a smaller (15" vs. 16" on 1st gen) rear wheel.

Yep, gotta mix your own. In some places there will be restrictions on purchasing Canadian Club. In some counties in Kentucky, Tennessee and other states there is no alcohol (at least hard liquor) sold. There are also many places where there are restrictions or prohibitions of Sunday alcohol sales. Unless it's changed, in Ohio package liquor (not by the glass) can only be purchased at the State Liquor Store. This means you need to plan ahead for Sundays, holidays, evenings etc. There's no popping out at 10:00 Friday night because your party needs another 5th. Schweppes is available, but you won't necessarily find it in every store. Canada Dry is easier to find I think. If you come to Michigan do not let the natives talk you into drinking Vernors ginger ale. The stuff is just plain nasty. It's almost, but not exactly, unlike ginger ale. For some reason though people raised here think it's the nectar of the Gods.
