Emblem/badge adhesive
MiCarl replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I used a double sided tape for the Yamaha emblems. I believe it was a trim specific tape from the auto parts store. I stuck it to the emblem, trimmed off the excess, then removed the backing and put it on the bike. Been there several years with no problem. -
When the rear pinion broke on my 89 that's what it did - whined when coasting.

Oh, what have I done
MiCarl replied to Oldseadog's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The screws are not Phillips, they are JIS which is slightly different. You will only strip the heads trying to break them loose with a Phillips. The Craftsman hand impact driver has JIS bits (you can turn Phillips screws with a JIS driver). After breaking loose with the impact driver you can finish removal with a #3 Phillips. The screws are secured with thread lock compound and a bit of heat will help break it loose. You should use loctite when reinstalling the screws. But if your goal is to polish simply unplug the 2 wire sets from the harness and leave the guts in the cover. -
Some things I learned AFTER we purchased our last trailer: 1) Lay down on the bed. That queen is queen wide but only full long. Mattress is poor quality and a good replacement is big $$ because of the odd size. Feet hang off....... 2) Sit on the commode and stand in the shower. Because there is plumbing under both in our new trailer my feet don't comfortably reach the floor from the throne and the shower pain is raised enough my head touches the ceiling. Really think about how it'll be used long term. Young adult children that might visit may soon have families. Sleeping arrangements will need to be different if they visit later. Try and anticipate problems in use. If you're working in the galley can she get to the bathroom without dancing around each other? Gets old fast. Is there a convenient place to string a clothes line? What will you do with two wet bath towels? Wet clothes from being caught in the rain? Consider closet space. Is there enough for 2 weeks worth of clothes? Our first trailer was a 25 foot bunkhouse model. The current one is 27. The 27 has less usable space because a chunk is taken up for an actual bedroom. Nice for a couple and one child, but the 25 could comfortably sleep 5. Then after you buy put a large level on front and a smaller one sideways near the tongue jack. They make a variety of ramp devices to level side to side, you can back the trailer up the ramp watching the level. Then you can use the tongue jack to level front-back. Then the jacks at the corners are just used to stabilize it. (really though to level a trailer using four corner jacks). If you've never stayed in a travel trailer consider renting one for a weekend. See what you like and not. Maybe try a different model another weekend.

Carb slide needed
MiCarl replied to frankd's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you strike out, I sell new aftermarket slides (with diaphragm). Takes me about a week to get them. LINK TO MKII SLIDE IN MY STORE. Takes me about a week to get them. Remember to enter "VentureRider" in the coupon field at checkout to get your 15% VentureRider discount. -
Sounds like middle gears chewed up, or bad splines on the output shaft.. That's the one that changes the drive direction from cross ways (way engine turns) to long ways (drive shaft direction). If you pull the rear case cover on the left side you can see the shaft for the horizontal gear. If it's turning and the drive shaft isn't then you know the problem is at the middle gear/output shaft. I believe it can be serviced without splitting the cases, maybe even in frame. Someone here has done it, I've seen the pictures.

Where are you gong to find a key punch machine and card reader? Seriously though, you can get trojans and crap on a brand new computer too. If the current one is good enough just clean it up.

My 89 had ME880s on it when I purchased it used. After a weekend heavily loaded, high temps, couple hundred miles on the freeway plus another couple hundred on 55mph asphalt the rear tread started to separate. However I'm pretty confident the previous owner had neglected them and there may have been some unseen damage before I worked them hard. I replaced them with a set of Kenda Kruz. I didn't record mileage but I'd guess they have over 5,000 and they still look new. This past weekend I went on a 400 mile trip loaded heavy plus a trailer. First 150 was in the rain. No problems, still quite happy with them.

Your motorcycle should be listed as an XVZ13DW (or XVZ13DWC for the California emissions model). Unfortunately Yamaha doesn't show the 89 in their fiches. Other than painted parts the 88 is the same. It is shown in the parts fiches from the online vendors (XVZ13DU or XVZ13DUC).

front brake lever switch on new thread
MiCarl replied to pmelah's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I go back to my earlier question....... The housing for the switch (the part not shown in your pictures) snaps into the perch for the brake lever. You're sure it's not still attached to the motorcycle? I think Dingy is probably right. The clutch side switch could be made to work. -
front brake lever switch on new thread
MiCarl replied to pmelah's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I don't think that's the correct switch. The part you listed is from the base Venture, where the Royale used a different switch. I could be wrong, but I think the Royale had cruise....... The Royale switch is listed as discontinued. Is the rest of your switch still snapped into the brake lever perch? You might be able to salvage this one. -
If it's not loosing fluid it'll be the master cylinder. The fact that you can pump it up also points to the master cylinder.

Word on the street is that it's best to stay with the construction (bias or radial) that the OEM used. I think the Challenger has a lower load rating than the Kruz. Not an issue on the front but if you're heavily loaded the Kruz might be a better choice for the rear.

You don't say which Kenda.... I run the Kenda Kruz front and rear. Been quite happy with them.

The axle has a shoulder to keep it from being pulled through the caliper carrier and the bearings. I suspect the purpose of the spacer is to distribute the load across the face of the aluminum caliper carrier. Without it I can see the shoulder wearing away the caliper carrier over time and making things loose. If you're suggesting you need ammo because there might be permanent damage to the motorcycle I doubt you need be concerned. Even if there is some wear in the caliper carrier replacing the spacer will put things back right. Sounds like you cannot be 100% sure the spacer was there when you took it in. It's possible that wheel was off pre-delivery, by the previous owner or even got left out by Yamaha. Still, a competent mechanic should have noticed and taken action. Unfortunately, dealers put their most junior people on tire and oil changes.

Snaggletooth is correct: Replace the slave cylinder. Sounds like your time is worth way more than the $75 or so. I managed to clean mine up, but it was quite time consuming. I wouldn't do it again.

The cam has a hex shape made into it that engages the tool. You rotate the crankshaft to pull the tool around - depressing the buckets. It's not adjoining cylinders though. It's two valves on the same cylinder. The Venture has 2 intake and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder.

Carb mount thing
MiCarl replied to jimmyenglish's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The interior ages a lot slower than the exterior. I don't think they have a metal core. But surface cracking on the exterior isn't an issue. If they crack clear through they'll leak and need to be patched or replaced. -
Be even better if you chew.

We occasionally ride tighter than the 1&2 second rule when on the freeway. At those speeds the distance gets great enough it can be too tempting for a cager to take half a lane. You really need to be able to rely on your fellows if doing that.

Little bracket in front of fairing
MiCarl replied to diversity48's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The adjuster spring is fighting you. Remove the headlamp assembly and install the fairing halves and the bracket. Set the tabs on the bottom of the headlamp assembly into the grommets and push the top of the headlamp back until you can reinstall the screws.- 7 replies

If the rotor is vertical the motorcycle is level (assuming the motorcycle isn't bent). I agree with tx2sturgis: Not necessary. When riding the motorcycle spends little time level anyhow.
-
Place a small level against your rear brake rotor.

class compressor
MiCarl replied to rbig1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Know what? I read too fast and thought you were talking about Cruise compressor. E4 code is often set by cracked solder joints where the connector socked is soldered to the CLASS board. You might open that up and resolder them before doing anything else.- 23 replies
