The factory service manual has a procedure in it, but as I recall it's not much help. To the best of my recollection I think you need to do this in the following order: - Fairing Stay - Instrument cluster - Headlamp assembly - Both fairing halves - Mirrors (they hold the top of the fairing in place - Scoop under nose of the fairing - Headlight trim - Body front lower Make sure all the cables are routed before putting the upper cowling on. - RH upper cowling - CB/CLASS panel - LH upper cowling - Windshield and trim Then you can reinstall the side covers and the top covers Good luck. It's tough enough when you're the one that took it apart.

You know, I just recently saw a picture of that record and brochure somewhere on the internet. I remember thinking how stupid a square record seemed.

Friesman, if you want the complete set I have a pinion that matches your output shaft. My pinion broke between the splines and the nut, just like your output shaft.

Anyone have a final drive for a 1300 1st gen you're willing to part with? My Pinion shaft is broken. Alternatively, I guess I could use a pinion, although I prefer a complete unit so I don't have to order shims etc. None currently on eBay. Thanks, Carl

I'm pretty proud of myself. I only clicked once!

New Tire, slow air leak, ain't one thing....
MiCarl replied to FutureVentures's topic in Watering Hole
I'll bet it's at the bead too, and those buggers are hard to detect because they are usually slow and often along a wide area. Wet the tire/wheel interface with slightly soapy water. Take a coffee break (don't have it in the sun). When you come back bead leaks will look like there is shaving cream on them. -
Lew, Welcome! My wife and I use the $59 J&M headsets from Sierra Electronics. We are very happy with them and they are way better than the Chatterbox that came with my Venture. You will find them at the bottom of this page http://www.sierra-mc.com/products.asp?cat=326 One caution on the full face model - You need to cut foam out of the chin bar for the mic which is rather deep. Not a problem on my Wife's HJC CL-15, but on my FX it's tough to find a spot deep enough. Make sure to mount the mike well up the chin bar. On my wife's I got it too low and it picks up some noise in a strong crosswind.

I've got a driver back rest that fits the 86-93. Not sure the brand, but it is black. I don't use it and will be pulling the mounting hardware this winter when I disassemble for body work and paint. If you don't find one by Jan. shoot me a PM. I'll probably have it available then.

Carb & vacuum question
MiCarl replied to Dano's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Sounds like you need to synchronize the carburetors. #1 has high vacuum (low pressure) because it's butterfly is too far closed relative to the others. It isn't getting fuel/air and the other three are dragging it along. Basically the other three cylinders are working hard to pump a vacuum on #1. When you open up the air flows and the engine isn't working as hard. Engine speeds up.- 2 replies

Bad Boy Horns Revisited
MiCarl replied to Schlepporello's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You can also mount your horn at the original location, but bend your bracket back at 45 deg. That tucks them in and looks very presentable. You can also shorten the bracket up too as you won't have to clear that radiator trim. -
We use J&M value headsets. They are $59 at wingstuff and sierra. Judging from the sound I hear from other bikes when I key up the CB the microphone is every bit as good as the earphones. They come in both open face and full face versions. Hands down better than the chatterbox headset I got with the Venture. They are at the bottom of this page: http://www.sierra-mc.com/products.asp?cat=326 Only downside to them is the mic on the full face model is rather deep, and requires cutting of the foam. On my FX helmet finding a spot in the chin bar deep enough was a challenge. On my wife's HJC CL-15 there is plenty of depth. They also want you to cut a hole in the foam for the headphones. In our helmets I removed the foam from the speaker and slipped them under the lining by our ears. Nice thing about the J&M 5 pin headsets is they include the hook up cord. Many other headsets require a separate cord purchase for your application.

The bottles make it too complicated. The fluid level in each bottle needs to be exactly the same, the connecting tube needs to be full. Easier to just use clear tubing bent into a U shape. If you want to hook up all 4 carbs you need two tees to make a 4 legged U. ATF makes a nice fluid because it is easy to see.

Rear wheel needle bearing
MiCarl replied to Gearhead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you replace the bearing there are 2 separate parts. The bearing and the "collar" which is the inner race (shown next to the bearing in okscooter's photo). Don't forget the oil seal. -
I got some keys for my XJ from Key Men http://www.key-men.com/. If I recall correctly they can reverse engineer a key code from a picture of your existing key.

Nope. Was the guy in TX. He used ITS also.

Maybe instead of the guy from TX in the XJ chat it was the guy from NM in the Venture chat..........

Aren't our customs and immigration people just wonderful? They jerk us Yanks around too. Once, a business colleague flew from London England (he's British) to Detroit for a trade show (pre 9-11). They turned him back because he didn't have a Visa. Now, you don't need a Visa to travel to the US from England, but he had one and hadn't brought it. That just pissed them off. Only problem I ever had with the Canadians was when they turned me back for having firewood. I felt pretty guilty too because they seemed to be really sad that they had to do that.

There is a guy I chat with in the XJ chat room. He's in Texas and had a similar problem. He used a service that got him a Maine title and plates. He fishes all weekend but I'll get the details from him tomorrow night.

Drivers head set cord for 89
MiCarl replied to Andrew's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I got a set too. If' I'd realized they're 2 identical cables I'd have shared an order with Andrew. The replacement cable from JM does not have the connector to tie into the attenuator on the driver remote. Not an issue for me, but anyone doing this should know they will lose that functionality.- 6 replies

That's a shame. In Michigan you can pretty much get a title for the asking if the motorcycle is over six years old. I've heard of companies that can get a title for you. Perfectly legal and have read a number of people who are happy with the service. Broadway Title is one of them. http://localbusinessreview.com/Display.aspx?ProductIds=102476009&CategoryId=51465&onlineAdGroupID=577103934&onlineKeywordID=3624709887&IsValid=1&orig_clicked_from=Google¤t_clicked_from=Google&clientIP=69.218.78.50&orig_cssID=0 Their price for a motorcycle is $200. Seems like a bargain compared to swapping a frame.......

Tahquamenon Falls is a must do! Well worth the side trip. http://www.gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/tahquamenon.shtml Despite what this article says I enjoyed the lower falls more. There is a rowboat rental and you can go to a small island that bisects the falls. The rapids are suitable for wading (take water shoes).

I pulled mine off because it's a passenger pelvis breaker for sure. Plus I didn't want to have to throw my leg that high. It'll be available this winter when I pull the brackets from under the seat.

Often fuel fouled plugs will mimic a completely dead ignition system. Don't hesitate to throw a new set in as your first check.
