Fuel Pump Problem 83 Venture Royale
MiCarl replied to donrigney's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Welcome aboard. Here is the link to your service manual (courtesy of Juggler): http://labs.trunkful.com/8385servicemanual.pdf -
Well, I re-upped for another Christmas at RadioShack. I'll be shovelling crap at the surging hordes. Until 2:30 when I'll stuff myself with left over turkey and take a nap!

Temp gauge too. That one seems willing to move backwards on the wrong side. I have a buddy that has one like that.- 13 replies

I mounted mine in the stock location. I fabbed up some angled brackets to replace the multi leafed ones on the stock horns. To keep them from sticking out too far I angled them back about 45 degrees. I made the brackets from the part that joins 2 sections of garage door opener together. My brother in law used to work for Genie and I ended up with a box of spare hardware. The relays are along the frame rails. The stock horn wires plug up to the relays. The power from the horns comes down the frame rail to the relay. I have a 30 amp in line fuse to the + bat terminal supplying them. They are grounded to whatever fastener happens to be there, might be a radiator mount.

global warming. It was 16 degrees when I got up this morning. Before global warming we never had weather like this until January.

Parts compatability
MiCarl replied to 83VR3711's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Doubt if there is a complete list of parts compatibility. You can check the fiches at the yamaha parts site (http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspx) and see if the part numbers are the same. Sometimes though the part numbers might be different, yet the parts are compatible. For instance, the fairing panels are interchangeable, but part numbers are often different. This is because they came from the factory painted, so different part numbers for different colors. The side covers are interchangeable, but different. The early ones had a vent, later ones had a larger vent with a louver in it. As far as the battery goes, I know someone who got a flooded battery for his 86 at Autozone for $43. The Autozone battery has a hole for the battery sensor, but not the sensor itself. He re-used his sensor. If you buy the battery from the dealer the sensor comes with it. It gets even more interesting on the driveline stuff. I have a 2nd gen final drive on my 89. While it's different, it can be made to work. -

Since the last two global warming conferences got snowed on they've renamed their issue "climate change". I guess the facts were becoming an inconvenient truth.

A lot of the problem is the excessive focus on short term results. When gas and money were cheap the SUVs kept them alive (barely). You can largely thank the big investors (especially mutual funds) for the short term focus. The only thing that matters is this quarter's numbers - the future be damned. As someone pointed out earlier the country has been on a borrowing binge. At some point the bill needs to be paid. Throwing around government money delays the inevitable, makes the problem larger and saddles the poor suckers that lived within their means with the bill.

I sure hope you're wrong about that.

Whatever colors you choose, pop the few extra $$ and get a good quality roller. Makes all the difference in the world!

I had a drill handy so I just drilled extra holes in the bead breaker arm to make it long enough. Worked real well too, until I got to the front tire on my 1st gen. That wheel really likes to hold onto the tire....

Geez. If the warden had a heart she'd let you use a couple of kitchen chairs, easier on the back.

I screwed my sheet of plywood on top of an old pallet - gives the set up some stiffness. Also lets the bolts point down so the ends aren't sticking up. Now, at the risk of causing some ridicule of myself. It was not apparent to me that the bead breaker should be used with the wheel laying on the ground in front of the changer. I was breaking beads with the wheel mounted in the changer. I eventually broke the neck off the changer and had to re-weld it. One day I needed to do a lawnmower wheel, which would not mount in the changer. I started to think about how I can get the bead broken. I realized the bead could be broken against the base - That's when the went on.

They carry several air horns. Most of the product manuals are available on their web site. http://search.harborfreight.com/cpisearch/web/search.do?keyword=air+horn&Submit=Go Click your horn, at the bottom of the page, below "add to basket" icon there are little green icons that are the links to to .pdf manual.

I just reviewed the schematic. Does the CMS shut down if you turn off the kill switch? If so check your turn signal fuse. The CMS is powered by the turn signal circuit. When the bike is not in neutral power can feed back from the safety relay, through the neutral light, to the CMS. The kill switch shuts off power to the safety relay. -
I just caused the exact same problem on mine. Had the CB out to work on the fairing and forgot to reattach the DIN cable that goes from the CB to the amp.

Assuming perfect friction with the road it's more like 87MPH. (I love the internet, you can research anything!) Glad you're safe. Don't do that anymore.

To make sure we understand what is going on: There are 2 displays. The upper is the computerized monitor system. The lower has the gear indicator and the clock. When you turn the key to on the monitor system should perform a scan. Each segment will light in turn. After the scan (and assuming the side stand is down) the LED should be flashing, the top right cell of the monitor should show the side stand indicator, the right three cells of the monitor show the fuel level, and all other cells should be off. The lower display should show the gear on the left and the clock on the right. As I understand your problem, it all appears normal with the bike in gear, but both displays and the LED die when you shift to neutral. Is this correct? -

Other trick is getting the computer module out. As you're looking at it from the rear there is a light pipe that goes to the right. You need to lift the left side up, then move it left as you rotate it out of it's hole.- 13 replies

The battery isn't so weak the neutral light pulls all the juice is it? I don't think the rotary gear selector switch is your problem. More likely you have a bad connection somewhere and the module is drawing it's power or ground (too early to read schematics!) from the neutral light circuit. When the neutral switch engages it turns on the light and messes up the free ride the module was getting. -
I've got one and I'm less than impressed. Bead breaker works OK. I've never used that long rod that comes with for mounting and dismounting tires. Too much trouble to set up and difficult to use. I saw someone pop the wheel loose from the machine trying to do one. I just use the machine to hold the wheel and use conventional irons. Before I had the Harbor Freight machine I used an old car rim, with a piece of hose over the edge to protect the motorcycle wheel. Car rim on bench, motorcycle wheel on rim, threaded rod down through the wheel, rim and bench with a big flat washer and nut on each end. Used tire irons. Worked great. For alloy wheels, I'd just get an inexpensive bead breaker and an old car rim. You cannot use the car rim for wire wheels.
