Only ten inches. That hardly counts at all.

Looking good. My 89 had almost exactly the same white/blue paint scheme, except the headlight bezel is white on mine too. Currently mine is undergoing body work in preparation for a new color.

The damping rod is not hex, it's 12 point. You can hold it with a 19mm hex. I don't have a 19mm hex. The way I do XJ forks is to take a short 12mm bolt from my bin (it has a 19mm head). I put two nuts on it and jam them together to lock them onto the bolt. I then drop that assembly down the tube and hold it with a 19mm socket and a couple extensions.

Colortune, I don't think I am impressed . . .

I use the color tune plugs, but not on the Venture so far. My observations: The 12mm plug is really hard to see. The throat of the thing is so narrow the flame isn't readily visible. Arcing to the head is a problem on water cooled machines in general. On air cooled machines the plug isn't buried so tight and it works better. The color range I've always observed was yellow-blue-blue-blue-blue-dark when it misses. I usually set them up by richening up until I have a yellow flame, then leaning out to where the yellow just disappears. This is a tad rich at idle, but helps out at higher speeds where everything built after 82 is inherently lean. -
Make sure you are checking oil level with the motorcycle on the center stand. Setting the window 1/2 full with the bike on the side stand is way too much oil.

I'll be going to Wadsworth, OH just after the first of the year. I could bring the trailer as far as Detroit.

There is also that "'til death do you part" thing. I'd like to rent your trailer after BEER30 is done with it.

Need help from electrical gurus

Sounds really similar to my 89. My charging system checks out. New battery made it less pronounced. If the cooling fan is on it'll drop even more. -
I got a deal on a 23 channel CB when I had just started driving, and there were only a few weeks remaining that the 23 channels could be sold. Because of the car I put it in I believe it was 1977. Before any Ventures were built all CBs had 40 channels. By law CB output is limited to 4 watts. As a practical matter, since they are being mass produced, the factory sets them low to be safe. Usually 3-3.5 watts I believe. I had that 23 channel CB peaked (power turned up to it's limit - I believe it was about 5 watts), aligned (frequencies fine tuned) and the modulation limiter removed. With an Astatic D-104 power mic it really rocked. I sold it a few years ago at a garage sale for $10.

It'll mess up receive too if it's really bad. Unless you live way out in the boonies you should have more than static on most channels, especially 19. With the squelch turned down you shouldn't hear static, it should be more of a din, like a large auditorium with everyone talking at the same time. There should be occasional whistles and screeches. If you turn the squelch up until the din just goes away, it should occasionally exceed the squelch and pop through. If you're just getting a hiss I'd suspect the antenna isn't connected. Don't transmit as this could damage the radio.

I got the HF trailer for the motorcycle, and then I had to buy a garden wagon because with the coupon it was half price. My coupon was 25% off entire purchase.

I just saw one in East Tawas, MI over Thanksgiving weekend. It was a Crest II, and I believe it was 18 or 20' long. Had a small outboard motor. I don't know much more as I was driving by and didn't stop. I noticed it because we bought a similar one this summer. This is the place I saw it: http://www.hawgsbaitandtackle.com/

I was fortunate enough to see a presentation by an Avon rep last month. During his presentation he stated that Avon is a premium tire, like Metzeler and Pirelli, and that like the other premium tires require a higher pressure than factory tires. On my 1st gen I have the 880s that the PO had on it. I run the Rear at 46PSI and the front at 36PSI which at lower than the Metzeler recommended pressure, especially since I sometimes ride 2 up HEAVY. Next season I'll probably go to 50/40. IMO the 880s stick like glue. I've never had the bike feel less than sure footed. Only problem I have with them is the noise they make when turning. When they need replacement I'll probably go with the Avon Venom just because of the noise. I check the tread on the rear frequently, and the pressure too. So far, no issues.

I just got a gas bill the other day. It looks like a February gas bill. I can't take too much more of this global warming.

Disclaimer: I don't have them yet. They're on my Santa list. Hopefully I'll have good things to say about them 12/26 http://www.carparts.com/Optilux-Elliptical-Dual-Fog-Driving-Light-Set/GP_2003770_N__10618.car

Might want to check it for a trap door at the end opposite the wheel chock. Those are real handy for getting the wheel off.

Any auxiliary lamps I've ever used were wired so they only came on with the headlights. This prevents accidentally leaving them on and returning to a dead battery. When I had them on cars/trucks (driving or fog) I always had an auxiliary switch to disable them. In Michigan you can only have two additional headlamps on a motorcycle. I'm going to put on a set of lamps that have both fog and driving lights in the single housing. My plan is to have the fog lamps on with the low beam (to fill in for low speed riding) and the driving lamps will come on with the high beam when I really need to see down the road. I haven't decided yet whether to add switches to disable them, I'm inclined not to. Of course the set I'm using aren't DOT approved:whistling:

Having a router isn't a bad idea even if you only have one computer. After I put one in my mother's house (1 computer) her problems decreased. Now, if I could just get her to quit clicking on attachments that end in .exe she'd be all set. I've known quite a few people who refuse to make an internet purchase because they're worried about credit card and identity theft. Those same people routinely go into restaurants and hand their credit cards to people (wait staff) who disappear with the card for 5-10 minutes. Want to bet which transaction is more likely to result in credit card theft?

Sitting around with any discharge is the worst thing you can do to a lead acid battery. I don't charge nightly, but everything being stored for an extended period gets the cells topped off with distilled water and a battery tender hooked up. The first battery on my lawn tractor lasted 8 years. The 2nd is only four years old.

I have to agree wholeheartedly. Normally I'm the loudest voice for personal responsibility. However, it's estimated that there were 2000 people in that crowd. Many of us have been in a crowd (sporting event, concert etc.) and know that when the crowd is moving you have little choice but to go with the flow. If someone goes down ahead of you you have 2 options: trample them or go down trying to stop and get trampled. The simple truth is that anyone near that employee had no choice other than to go or be crushed with him. I lived in Cincinnati when people were killed in the surge going into a concert at Riverfront Coliseum when they had festival (open) seating. The way they made sure that never happened again was to make sure every ticket holder had an assigned seat. The retailers create this nuisance, and need to be held responsible. It's a shame really. When I was a kid we started Thanksgiving with all the men and boys going hunting together. Then we had the huge midday family meal. Then the children would watch Wizard of Oz while the adults slept through football. Next day everyone would sleep late then put up the Christmas decorations. This year, when my brother in law arrived at 1:20PM for the 2 o'clock feast he complained that we had already set the huge table we have just for thanksgiving. By having it set we'd deprived him of a place to spread his ads and plan his shopping strategy. He couldn't strategize at home because he was already shopping at 7:00AM to get the early, early bird sales. And yes, we always make sure the table is set before the family arrives because we can't serve the meal for all the planning and plotting if we let the ads come out. Of course I was up early today since my employer opens at 6 am this day because they don't dare let people purchase their crap elsewhere. The really dumb thing is we don't make money on those door busters anyhow. Rant over.

My 89 has a receiver type hitch. The front attaches with the muffler mount bolt (between the muffler and frame). The rear hangs from the saddle bag frame. If you have a MKI the saddle bag frame will be different. I'll be tearing apart after Christmas for paint. I can get you detailed photos and dimensions then if you like.

What the slides do is keep the airflow more or less constant through the throat of the carburetor (constant velocity). As they open they also let extra fuel in through the needle jet. If the springs are too light the slides will open prematurely, resulting in slower air flow and a lean condition - particularly on acceleration. Whatever problem you're having, it's not likely the slide springs are the culprits (unless somebody damaged them).

which GPS is the best now???
MiCarl replied to Ga Dawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well, at the end of the day they all get you there. Mine has real time traffic, reality view (shows a 3d picture of the interchange and puts orange arrows down the lanes I should be in) and text to speech (says street names out loud). It's not water proof or water resistant. For my $0.02 traffic is not very valuable, reality view is cool but not usually necessary, text to speech is great. I find I primarily listen to it rather than look at it (good thing). I'm planning to adapt it to the Venture for next season. I think I can tie it into the intercom system to hear it talk. Like eazyduzzit I'll take it off in the rain. Although as I write this it occurs to me I could install it in the trunk where it would be dry and still listen through the intercom. Maybe a 2nd hook up. -
Greasing the shaft
MiCarl replied to MikeM8560's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
There is a dust cover on the drive shaft coupler at the "pumpkin". It's quite likely that will be destroyed during disassembly. You might want to make sure the mechanic has one on hand before he starts the job. I'd think an hour or less for extra labor.
