  1. That doesn't sound right. According to the parts fiche the same front disc was used from 83 to 85 on both the base Venture and the Royale. Looking up one color scheme of the 89 Royale wheel shows it was used back to '84. Looks like a similar story on the rear, the MKII rear is the same part as the MKI. I know the MKII rotor is slotted, where the MKI rotor is ventillated. I wonder though, if they aren't dimensionally equivalent. Anybody know for sure? If so, then a MKII front rotor should work on the rear of the MKI because the MKI used the same rotor front and rear.
  2. Nope. 650XS plugs have a 3/4" hex on them.
  3. We have one we used occasionally on the boat, didn't think it even got to 40 degrees below ambient. They have small space for the size of the overall package. They are heavy. Works ok to keep your sandwich from turning gray, but doesn't keep beverages refreshingly cool. Oh, and they won't ever chill anything, it has to be pre-cooled. I think you'd be much better off with a good cooler and a bag of ice.
  4. My family did a Disney cruise a number of years ago. I agree, I wouldn't get off the boat in Nasau again. Just a filthy town with t-shirt sellers and hair braiders. Castaway Cay is Disney's private island. It is outstanding. They have a pier for the cruise ship so you don't use a tender like a lot of island excursions. This makes for a more pleasant trip, however the weather has to allow the ship into the inlet. The time we went the wind and current were difficult and the Captain tried 3 times before aborting for two hours. Fourth try he got in but we missed half the day there. The Disney ships are smaller than most cruise ships, you can definitely feel the sea more. I like this, but for those inclined to motion sickness it can be an issue. They provide an outstanding experience for the children. It's a dream trip for the young-uns.
  5. The tachometer is electronic. Nothing really moves except the needle. I think it's unlikely that the noise is coming from there. What about parked, in neutral? The tachometer doesn't care if you are moving or not.
  6. Collapsed vacuum hoses will cause this problem. Also, these engines run pretty well on two cylinders. If you have a cylinder or two not firing it will cause extremely low vacuum. Also, valve lash too tight can cause vacuum problems.
  7. The only way I would see a problem is if you were using wheel chocks without tiedowns. So long as it's anchored properly there shouldn't be an issue.
  8. As part of the bailout each of us would receive a free DVD: "Taxpayers Screwed" starring Ben Dover.
  9. Yamaha uses a spur gear primary drive. It's indestructible and maintenance free. Unfortunately spur gears are noisy. Due to varying tolerances some are noisier than others. They also make noise at varying RPMs. Switching components (I basket) can sometimes quiet an excessively noisy one, or move the whine out of your cruising RPM. If you decide to purchase a Venture, ride your unit before signing. That way you can make sure it's sounds aren't an issue for you.
  10. Exactly our point. Keep both and get a parts bike (or 2) for them.
  11. Agreed. 2 Ventures isn't too many.
  12. Those should be great dogs! A warning though: Last month we got a lab mix (allegedly mostly lab) puppy to replace the lab we had to say goodbye to two years ago. We're finding puppies are A LOT busier than we rememberd!
  13. Gee, I guess I should have tried that:doh: Thanks!
  14. I need to order up some new grips for my 1st gen. Can anyone confirm or deny 7/8" diameter? Thanks!
  15. You'd think they'd replace that thing with an AUX jack. Not only is it more modern it'd be cheaper to produce.
  16. A clutch that disengages incompletely will make neutral hard to find with the bike running. Shut off it should be fine. Were you able to find neutral with the engine off? I'm unclear which housing you broke. Do you mean the side cover where the shaft passes through - right next to the shift lever? If so, did you have that cover off for some reason?
  17. That would be 8 or 9 Eastern.
  18. I'm a member. We do a lot of riding and eating with our chapter. We also do some charity work with them. Great bunch of people. We belong to the national organization because it's a requirement to be a member of the local chapter. There are activities at the state and national level, and when some occur reasonably close to home we might participate. STAR rules make sure that group rides are enjoyable and safe. Roles, rules and hand signals are all standardized. There is no riding bar to bar. To an outsider it might appear that we are riding from food to food, but that really isn't the case:hihi:. It's very much a family friendly organization, a number of whole families participate. My impression is that there is a lot of variation chapter to chapter in how active they are. Some might have rides and activities every weekend, others less so. If you're looking for a safe group, that doesn't ride drunk or speed, you might want to check it out. My suggestion would be that you check out a chapter (or two or more) in your area.
  19. There isn't even a shunt. It's just two screws. The left one should have a ground lead on it and the right should have a fused hot lead on it. They are just a connection point for a low current accessory.
  20. I just made one in the test zone. You need to post your message, then it brings up the poll options page. I cannot find a way to modify the poll, so it seems you need to get it right the first time.

    Noise

On many motorcycles the primary drive (from the crankshaft to the transmission) is chain. This design is quiet but generally requires maintenance. Yamaha tends to use gears for the primary drive. The gear driven primary is strong and zero maintenance. To eliminate side loads and reduce costs they use straight cut, or spur, gears. Spur gears are inherently noisy. Depending on the gear lash (which is not adjustable) of the individual machine there will be more or less noise. My 89 makes a whistling sound, but it's been so long since riding weather I don't remember at what RPM it is most pronounced:crying: At any rate, the gear noise is not an indication of a mechanical defect. It's purely an aesthetic issue.
  22. I just consulted some sheep entrails. They tell me you need a thorough carburetor cleaning, and possible valve lash adjustment. Oh, don't go back to a mechanic that can't diagnose a TCI from a faulty side stand relay.
  23. I think this is the link: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=95670
  24. I've been seeing a lot of posts of enclosed 3 wheeled vehicles that are technically motorcycles. Since they are motorcycles I suspect they get to avoid a lot of the regulations that encumber manufacturers of enclosed vehicles that have four wheels. I was wondering how long until the powers that be get their noose around these vehicles. Seems like your DMV is already moving that way.
  25. Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after:no-no-no:
