50 psi.

Agreed. How much aggravation is it worth to transmit another 6 feet? When riding with a group I always set the CB to LO power anyhow so I don't over drive their receivers or interfere with someone using the frequency farther away. By the way, the stock cable has about 1 foot of slack.

Carb Overhaul Costs & Jetting
MiCarl replied to Greeny's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The warranty book for the remove/install and clean says 5.6 hours. That's what Yamaha will pay for under warranty. So 5.6 X labor rate is what Yamaha would pay. As a retail customer it would probably be more. Jetting is an entirely different proposition. To do it properly you're looking at 2.6 hours (warranty book) plus a dynomometer run for each iteration. -
Here's what I figure the load on the tire was the last 300 miles: Motorcycle is about 800 lbs. A bit more with fuel - call it 500 lbs on the rear tire. My svelt self is 235 lbs. Put 150 of it on the rear wheel. SWMBO claims to be 150. Right over the axle call it 150. Add another 100 pounds for gear and crap in the bags. That puts the total load on the tire at 900 lbs, right at it's limit of 908lbs. The tire is a 77H, which means it's rated to carry those 908lbs. for an extended period of 130mph riding. Since I watch my speed pretty carefully it probably hasn't seen more than 80, and then only for a very short distance.

Since I've owned the bike the rear tire has been kept above 40psi. Since we were 2 up heavy for Maintenance Day it was at 50PSI when it started to let go. I have not idea what the PO might have done to it though. You are right that it's been mostly straight line riding recently - almost all of the recent riding has been 2 up on the freeway. The tire is at the shop, but I believe they were only 1 1/2 years old when I got the motorcycle. That would make them about 3 years old now.

I have been watching them like a hawk, gave it a thorough going over before leaving for Maintenance Day. I replaced it with a Kenda Kruz.

Well, my trailer isn't even assembled yet and the problem is on both sides of the tire. Perhaps you are confusing me with MARCARL who is the better looking one?

My rear tire, a Metzeler ME880. 8 or so of the lugs are starting to lift. The damage is visible inside the carcass as raised lumps, but they are too slight to photograph. These tires were on the motorcycle when I bought it so I don't know if they were abused or the mileage. They have about half the tread left.

89VR Exhaust Question
MiCarl replied to rmcclain's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The moisture that drains out the hole comes from the exhaust, which has a lot of water in it. You can see this at the tailpipe of your car on a cold day. So, since it's open to the exhaust passages some exhaust will come through it. Not normally noticeable unless it's a cold day or you load up on the Sea Foam. -
My Metzelers came on the bike too. I don't know what abuse the PO did to them. Considering how they were mounted abuse seems likely.......

I found the exact same thing on a Metzeler ME880 yesterday. I ordered a set of the Kenda Kruz. I figure if I'm going to be throwing them away I might as well throw away the cheap ones.

Tire Question-
MiCarl replied to Mark Koontz's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I loved my Metzelers. Yesterday I found three tread blocks on the rear lifting relative to their neighbors. I've ordered Kendas to replace the Metzelers. My reasoning for the Kendas is that we have a short season here, and we don't do a lot of long trips so tires always die of old age before they wear out. Also, one piece of crap in the road and any tire is junk. I figure I'll just treat them like filters - regular replacement. -
Tongue should be strong enough to hold it. I'd be tempted to mount a ball to the wall, ez on, ez off.

A Bargain at twice the price!

I'm not sure why you're embarrassed, this incident was clearly caused by the wife. It's amazing how easy they are to pick up when the adrenaline's pumping.

Which antifreeze to use?
MiCarl replied to safetyguy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Actually pure antifreeze will freeze at a higher temp than the 50-50 mix. Not sure about the boiling side. I don't exactly remember my high school chemistry, but it has something to do with water being a polar molecule. It's freezing point and boiling point are very close together. The antifreeze interferes with the crystilization of the water, lowering the freezing point.- 17 replies

Any tips for cutting into helmet to fit speakers
MiCarl replied to dogman's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
Well, every idea so far is better than what I did:thumbdown: Good idea to ask..... -
I sprayed mine out good with electrical contact cleaner and they've been fine ever since.

I like it. Just wouldn't want anyone grabbing on to it. How'd you identify that:think:

The forks look to be 86 or 87. Rottdoglover has a blond 87 which isn't supposed to happen..... I never saw a handle like that on the trunk before. You'll want to grease that to keep hitchhikers off. Nice looking bike.

If you're going to ride it home you need to have a really close look at tires, brake fluid, all the lights and horn work etc. By 89 Yamaha had most of the kinks worked out of what started out as a very good machine. They do seem to be a bit prone to pinion gear failures at both ends of the drive shaft - the machine will still go but there will be bearing noise that changes on accel and decel. Otherwise, they have the standard 80s Yamaha fuse block and stator plug that will fail. Easy fixes but not good on a 3 hour ride.

The YouTube videos I've seen of car tires show them going up on edge during turns too. In fact, I can't imagine the bike would turn if it didn't.

Tach and lights
MiCarl replied to Chuckles's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Normally yes. These circuits are backwards - they ground through their respective switches/sensors. The common here is the hot (brown lead) -
Tach and lights
MiCarl replied to Chuckles's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The following are all powered through the SIGNAL fuse: Neutral light Brake lights Horn Tachometer Voltmeter Temp gauge If none of them are working I'd look at the fuse. If I recall correctly there are 3 connectors at the instrument panel, 2 plug into the CMS and the third is on a pigtail and carries all the other stuff. You didn't forget to plug it in did you? Finally, if everything else is ok check for +12V on the Brown wire the instrument panel plugs into (key on). If you've got 12V there the problem is somewhere in the panel
