The Best Fuel
MiCarl replied to ManWithAVision's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I heard an argument on the radio a few weeks ago between someone from the marine industry and someone in one of the government agencies. Apparently there are moves afoot here in the U.S. to require 15% ethanol in the non-aviation gasoline. Basically the marine guy was complaining that the fuel had only been tested in a few brand new cars and not in any older vehicles or marine engines. The gov't position was "We think it'll be fine. Yeah, we ruined all the fiberglass tanks with the 10% but nobody uses them anymore so 15% will be ok." I suspect we can count on a 15% ethanol blend in the not too distant future. -
That cap is spot welded to the vent pipe and is very easy to break off. You'll need to replace the entire vent. They're not real expensive. Or, you might try to epoxy it on. Be sure you don't cover the vent hole.

You lose. Today it was Karl Malden.

So, there's a motorcycle rally in Newport Kentucky. What about Cincinnati? Nothing going on, as usual?

No Spark at the plugs.
MiCarl replied to Big Hack's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
We cross referenced it last night. Only the 90-93 Ventures and the V-Max (from around then) to 2007 have the same part number. -

Four ignition coils. It only has one pick up coil, and it's in by the alternator. The manual may refer to it as a pulse coil or pulse generator. Also, your manual is probably the 86 manual with addendums in the front for later changes. They're little short chapters and they don't repeat themselves. So you have to look at the '90 addendum to see the changes to the ignition system. -

The 93 does not use a TCI. 90-93 use a computerized ignition. It only has one pick up coil. So a bad connection or bad pick up coil will shut the whole thing down as opposed to the TCI which has four separate functional units. Hope for a bad connection because used parts for the 90+ system seem to be unobtanium. -
radio noise filter
MiCarl replied to Wizard765's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That sounds like it could be regulator/rectifier related. It regulates the voltage by shunting excess output from the alternator to ground. When there is more load there is less excess to bleed off. -
I don't have it in front of me (it's at the shop) but I believe the one I yanked out of an 88 yesterday has 41R-11 on the blue field of the label followed by a 4 or 5 digit number embossed in a silver box. I suspect the 82305 portion of the part number designates it as an igniter and is therefore irrelevant on the box itself. The digits in the silver box are probably a serial number for the box. I'd expect the 90-93 box to have 3JJ-11 in the blue field of the box. By the way, that part was superseded with the 3JJ-82305-12-00 unit. So if you find one labeled 3JJ-12 take it, it's the more gooder box.

In our chapter we've got people that ride Goldwings, Harleys, a Ural. Some of them have never owned a Yamaha. You do have to own a Yamaha to be Vice President of the chapter or any higher office.

Rear end noise
MiCarl replied to jasonm.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'd be tempted to unmount the brake caliper and see if the sound goes away. -
If you like it otherwise, offer them a ridiculously low price. Have the sales guy check with the service department on how much to fix it (A LOT!). Ride without cruise until the first rainy day and then fix it yourself.

I'm a member. I consider the international membership worthless. Belonging to STAR international is a requirement to belong to a local STAR chapter. Whether a local STAR chapter is worthwhile depends a lot on the individual chapter. I'd suggest you attend some local chapter meetings. Find out if their activities are worth $58/year ($48 international dues plus $10 local dues) to you.

Pre 1990 utilized a TCI (Transistor Controlled Ignition). It utilized analog electronics to control the advance curve. It's essentially 4 units in one, with 4 pick up coils and 4 sets of circuitry in the box to fire each of the four coils. This is why when the TCI fails it often only looses one cylinder - very few of the components are shared. From 1990 on Yamaha used a DCI (Digitally Controlled Ignition). There is one pick up coil which is watched by a microprocessor. The microprocessor then calculates itnition timing advance and position of the crankshaft and triggers each of the four coils based on it's calculations. There is very little difference in the wiring schematic - primarily the loss of the wires from the three pick up coils which were dropped in 1990. Of course Yamaha used the same connectors but moved the wires around in them so that putting in the wrong igniter blows fuses.

I've cross referenced the part and the 90-93 igniter is unique to the Venture. That's not to say a Vmax igniter won't plug up and run but I'd bet the advance curve is different.

Why do the ventures whine?
MiCarl replied to Red Rider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
CNC machining is slow (relatively speaking), and expensive. In volume I'm sure helical gears are cut on a specialized machine with specialized tooling that knocks them out in a few seconds. The machine for spur (straight cut) gears would be even simpler. -
Just keep them above the high water line and you should be fine.

Little late now, but what you should have done is gone out to the box and moved your line A connections onto line B. The satellite boxes would have been able to phone home on line B and you wouldn't have to pay for another line.

Russ, if there are any in those buses you should get them. Darn things are rather scarce. Anybody want to give Russ the number off one? I think it'll start with 3JJ-

Lean angle when parked.

Anything keeping you from running the suspension pressure up AFTER you get through the shed door? **EDIT** OOPS! Standard, isn't it? -
When it is first turned on all the lights should come on. Then the resume and set lights should go out. If it does all that the diagnostics think the electronics are all good. If the thing doesn't light up at all look for a bad fuse or switch. If it just won't set there is a very good chance it's the clutch lever pivot. Will it start in gear with the clutch out? That's another symptom of worn clutch lever pivot preventing it from depressing the switch. Does the auto cancel on the turn signals work? The cruise uses the same sensor the auto cancel does. If the auto cancel doesn't work that pickup behind the speedometer may be the problem. If you can press the set switch and the "set" light comes on but it doesn't hold there is a problem with the vacuum system. There is a hose that runs from the pump under the right fairing to the servo under the left fairing. At this age, it is suspect. I think I have 2 complete spare cruise systems, so I should be able to come up with whatever you need.

1st gen radio information
MiCarl replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
There are no dead 1st gen CBs. Good ones collect in piles and are a dime a dozen. I've got two working spares. Why don't I send you the one that is missing knobs. If that's not dead enough for you I suppose I could fry it before I send it.......- 76 replies

To elaborate: He needs a 90-93 ignition module.

MiCarl replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You 100% sure about those wires? They are above the oil level so they don't leak when parked. When the engine is running the alternator rotor throws oil up on them. Oh, for what it's worth, mine wasn't leaking along the wires. The grommets had shrunk and it was leaking between the grommet and the engine. -

MiCarl replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When oil leaks through the wire grommets in the stator cover it runs down the wires and ends up under the middle gear cover - right at the side stand pivot. Then it runs along the frame rail and makes it look like the oil pan is leaking. As far as your slides go - have you synced the carbs? If they're out of sync it's possible one doesn't have any air moving.
