Years ago I pulled a SB 400 out of a Suburban and replaced it with a 305. Way under powered.

No seat belts, No 5mph bumpers, No passive restraints. Probably not even legal to drive on a public road.

Oh yeah. Dry cold is great. When the lips crack wide open it takes our minds right off the shivering.
-
Yeah, cool here in Michigan too. At least it's not "Texas cold" yet.

According to Michigan: “Motorcycle” means every motor vehicle having a saddle or seat for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than 3 wheels in contact with the ground but excluding a tractor. I always wondered if the Voyager kits weren't vulnerable to over enthusiastic law enforcement.

This is an interesting angle. Your friend might want to look into that....... BTW, there isn't enough alcohol in the world to make liver and onions go in my pie hole.

overtaxing charging circuit?
MiCarl replied to dynodon's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm at the limit on my 89 with a few running lights on back, radio and a pair of 55w lights. Stop and go the battery draws down. If I keep above 3Krpm and off the brakes (anti-dives) it seems to be ok. -

Valve adjusting questions
MiCarl replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I think Yamaha uses the same specs on every shim/bucket cam they ever made. Means don't have to remember too many. -
Valve adjusting questions
MiCarl replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Gary, I don't have the book here at home but I believe the exhaust spec is 0.16-0.20. It's just the intakes that are 0.11-0.15. If I remember my numbers correctly that means only your #4 exhaust and the one #2 intake are in spec. The reason the exhaust valves have a looser spec is because the hot exhaust gas moves over the stem causing them to "stretch" more when the engine is warmed up. Intake valve stems have cold intake air on them so they don't expand as much. No need to worry about the different wear in rates. In fact, they probably aren't different. Remember the shims come in 0.05mm increments. This means they likely differed by 0.04 the day it was assembled. I believe they're all within that. The tightening is due to the valves wearing into the seat. This happens fastest when the engine is new. Once they settle in the wear slows down. That's why the initial check is at much lower mileage than the regular interval after that. If the initial service was never done it's not surprising that most of them are tight. -
I'm opening an online parts store in conjunction with my service business. Of course Venture stuff has been my first priority for the catalog. I really hadn't planned to open yet but saw this thread and decided to have a pre-opening sale. So through Monday Nov. 30 everything is 20% off. This is only advertised to VentureRider guinnea.....er, members. Please be aware that I do not yet have inventory of most items and it'll probably be 4 weeks or so until you receive your order. Here it is: http://www.thundervalleypower.com/store/

I saw some of that. The Lions weren't playing when I watched:bang head:

Too late! Ours is done and gone.

I've had them pull out or turn left in front of a group. I've had them pull out or turn left in front of my Yukon. I've seen them cut through a group to get to an exit ramp or passing lane. The best defense is between your ears. The only time I ever got hit was when that one wasn't turned on.

Fork oil Service manual 17mm hex drive socket Torque wrench ---- I'd put new bushings in while I was at it. They're inexpensive and you'll have brand new forks. Besides, nothing worse than starting the job and finding out it's gotta all lay around for a week because the bushings are shot and you had to order them.

Too bad they didn't fill the mold all the way before they broke it.....

Gotta watch those old tires. I sold a Maxim to a guy (as a project bike) with old tires. He got it fired up and the front tire came apart on him. Fortunately he wasn't hurt. Those narrow front tires are much more prone to follow road features than the wider tires on the Ventures. It was bad enough on my 650 that I would avoid lane changes to the inside on a curve, the expansion joints felt like they wanted to pull the bike away from me. Tar snakes would run it all over the road.

Current draw of brake circuit
MiCarl replied to Grisolm1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Mine does the same thing. I suspect the anti-dives pull a lot of juice. -
I agree. Insurance companies have to make a profit. That means they take in more in premiums than they pay out. Insurance is Risk Management. You buy insurance for risks you cannot manage on your own, and you pay a fee for that like any other service.

Some Venture Royale questions for you
MiCarl replied to Beau-Kat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Seems like I recall something in the parts fiche about a rev limiter but it points at the pick up coils if I recall correctly. No rev limiter that I know of. Your fuel tank does have a reserve - it's on the right side behind the passenger foot rest. It's got a fuel gauge, and if it's like mine it'll show empty long before you need to switch to RES. That warning light always annoys me into fueling when there's still a gallon and a half left. -
LED power requirements for you elecrical guru's
MiCarl replied to barend's topic in General Tech Talk
If I understand you you'll be pulling 2 1157 lamps and adding LEDs. Long before you get enough LEDs to draw more power than 2 1157 lamps the motorcycle will be too heavy to ride. -
All other things being equal stopping distance will be 100% dependent on the tire. Normally sliding friction is less than static friction so skidding = bad for both stopping and steering. Tires are a special case in that they provide the most friction at roughly 10% slip (depends on tire compound). On a 4 wheel vehicle if you start to skid you can let off the brakes and re-apply (that's what ABS is supposed to do automatically). On a motorcycle if you're in a lateral skid and let off the brakes you're almost certain to high side. It seems to me that ABS is an outstanding idea for motorcycles. Some regulation of motorcycle ABS is probably in order. Every Chinese street scooter I've seen has a gadget on the front brake caliper labeled ABS. It's not ABS, it's an expansion chamber to make the brakes less responsive - more correctly it'd be called Mushy Brake System.

That motorcycle has a vacuum petcock. In "ON" or "RES" fuel should only flow if there is intake vacuum. As Dan said "PRI" flows all the time, and is used for filling dry carburetors. Since it's a gravity feed system that is a safety to keep the fuel in the tank if the floats stick or leak. As someone else posted you need to get over to xjbikes.com. Lots of young folks over there that think they know everything but there are others that know what they're talking about. In particular there is a member on there (chacal) that sells and specializes in XJ parts. His prices are better than dealer prices and he stocks the stuff. I usually have parts from him the 2nd day after the order and I only pay for the slow shipping. Great bikes, but not sure I'd agree with you on being low. They stand pretty tall compated to some other 750s. Oh, the model of your bike is XJ750J. It'll come up.

CB (portable) Question......
MiCarl replied to Aussie Annie's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Annie, This article ([ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_Radio_Service[/ame]) might help you out. Looks like that UHF you mentioned may be the similar service there.
