I run a can once in the spring and about once every other month after that. I run lots of so called straight gas (Ethanol 10% blend crap). Also, this bike never sits more than a day without riding. I've ridden it to work everyday since mid April. It gets ridden most every Saturday and sometimes on Sundays.

Oh great, now I'm thinking wrong thoughts about Rick and him making the butts of so many men happy. JUST WRONG!!!!!!

I read your write up and then I read Freebird's post about the hell he went through pulling his carbs. No way in hell am I trying that. I've been learning to work on as many aspects of this bike as I can. I've never been friends with carburetors and never has one survived me taking it apart. Even in small engine shop, those simple little carbs never worked right after I "fixed" them.

I should have mentioned the plugs are good. I replaced them last fall. The headers heat up evenly, I already thought of that. I should buy stock in seafoam as I use so much of it. I don't have a tach, but I did buy a meter that is supposed to measure RPM with a clamp over the #1 plug wire. 1000RPM?? Really that high? When I pulled the old plugs last fall at Pork in the Pines, they looked good. Nice tan color to them. No clue on the AIS. I bought this bike used a few years back. No popping on deceleration anymore. There used to be popping before I took it in for repair a few years ago. HOWEVER, I had amazing Howitzer like backfire almost on command during deceleration until I started adjusting the mixture screws. I have no clue how to adjust the float levels. That sounds like I have to pull the carbs off the bike. I grew up in my Dad's gas station garage working on cars. Carbs and transmissions are my demons. I'd rather rebuild a 318 than pull the carbs off this bike.

I forgot to mention that I changed them out at Pork in the Pines last fall also, so these plugs have about 4k miles on them.

This is something I've been dealing with ever since I took my 99 RSV into the dealer a few years ago to have them fix my carbs because gas was pouring out of my overflow tube on the left side. They fixed that problem, but ever since my gas mileage has been on the low 30's. Black Owl and I have carb tuned it and last year at Pork in the Pines I used the color tune to check the fuel air mixtures. The fuel air mix appeared to be ok with a nice blue flame in each cylinder. But I've had all winter and spring to get up the courage and start adjusting the mixture on each carb. So I started by turning each mixture screw in 1/4 turn then running a few tanks of gas to see if things improved. After the second time there was a little mpg increase to about 36mpg (up from 34) and the nasty gas smell was gone. So I tried a third time. Mileage went down a bit and the gas smell came back. By this time I had turned each screw in 3/4's of a turn total. I had read on these forums somewhere that you should start with the mixture screws at 2 1/2 turns out if say you were rebuilding your carbs and needed to start at a base line. So last night I carefully turned each screw all the way in while counting the turns and reset each one to 2.5 turns out. Here are the counts for each carb as I turned the mixture screws all the way in. carb #1 3+ turns in carb #2 3+ turns in carb #3 2 3/4 turns in carb #4 2 1/2 turns in This after I had already turned each in by 3/4 turns over the past month. Questions: 1. Were those mixture screws out way too far? 2. Did I do the right thing by adjusting them all to 2.5 turns out? It runs pretty good today. I have not ridden far enough to see if MPG changed. 3. Is there a better tool besides the colour tune to determine air fuel mixture? It is pretty subjective as to the correct color shade of the blue flame. If not, I may beg to borrow a colour tune again. 4. I know I should re-sync the carbs after all this. Black Owl, you got the time to help? 5. is there anything else I should check? ============================== Update I should have mentioned the plugs are good. I replaced them last fall. Only about 4k on them. The headers heat up evenly, I already thought of that. I should buy stock in seafoam as I use so much of it. (1 can about ever other month) I don't have a tach, but I did buy a meter that is supposed to measure RPM with a clamp over the #1 plug wire. 1000RPM?? Really that high? There used to be popping before I took it in for repair a few years ago. HOWEVER, I had amazing Howitzer like backfire almost on command during deceleration until I started adjusting the mixture screws. Update (again): I have K&N air filters and I take care of them routinely.

Any Computer Guru's?
juggler replied to FROG MAN's topic in Computer help and tips for using this site.
I just setup Dos Box on my Mac. Wow, what a flash back to the 80's and early 90's. It's been that long since I worked in DOS on a regular basis. These days when I'm in a command line OS it's Linux or other *nix variant. It reports as Dos 5.0 so it should run older software as long as the software isn't to complex. They report that they are still working on getting it able to run all Dos software. The real trick may be getting Dos Box to recognize your USB port. This is difficult for many emulators. -

Any computer store should have the cable I use PuTTY for my terminal program when I'm forced to use Windows http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ I never heard of Dos Box. I just downloaded the Mac OS X version. Ask them about support. -
Congrats on the opportunity to leave Michigan. I'd say come on over to MN, we're not as bad as Michigan yet. We still have jobs. Sioux Falls, SD is always advertising about their jobs and the fact that the state does not have personal income taxes. Since your looking for Texas, you should make a huge effort to look down there. Texas is one of the few states were jobs are increasing.

I was but they cost money. I also have a pair of perfectly good Tour Master Venture Air mesh riding pants. I chose not to wear them. Actually I chose not to try to squeeze my backside into them.

We had a nice Saturday ride yesterday. We rode up to Superior, WI to have dinner. Total trip was 363 miles. Google Map of our trip The worst part was one the way up a hornet went up my left pant leg and stung me three times before I managed to kill the bugger. My left calf hurt for hours. It's really fun trying to kill it while trying not to crash! Other than that the weather was cool and breezy (heavy wind on the way up). I finally got to see how bright my new headlight is, it be bright!

That's about a 25% loss which is not that unusual. I did a quick Google search for HP loss due to the drive train and found many sports cars like the Camaro and Corvettes with 15% to 20% loos from engine to wheels. If the clutch is worn a bit or the gears are not as lubed as they could be your going to see a bit more loss. I also suspect the straight cut gears cause more loss than helical cut gears. It would be interesting to see a new RSV freshly lubed run on a Dyno. Then for the fun of it lets run one of the dinosours you first gener's ride. -
My wife heard such a clatter she threw open the window to what was the matter and then ran to get her camera to photograph what she saw http://elisabethviola.blogspot.com/2009/07/santa-rides-crotch-rocket.html

I've never been a fan of biscuits and gravy. Now biscuits and butter, biscuits and grape jelly, biscuits and honey, biscuits and peanut butter are in danger if near me.

I've been to Florida many times, I've also never ridden down there. I really want to ride down to Key West sometime. I just need to get a month off from work to get there and back and still have time to enjoy the trip.

Someone at work pointed this out to me today. Wireless LED helmet mount brake lights. I suppose it could also be used on a removable trunk for those with a RS Tour Deluxe. http://www.atlantispowersports.com/wirelesshelmetlight.htm

In that price range they are all pretty much junk and considered disposable. A new but increasingly common option for ultra portables are net books. These are tiny little buggers that could fit in most purses and cost only $200 - $400. They are good for web surfing, email and moderate work. Many people put Harley Road King stock pipes on the Venture. A few people make a custom bracket to hang them. Usually you can get almost new HD pipes really cheap since so many HD owners swap out the stock pipes for custom pipes. Maybe someone will speak up about their HD pipes.

I use this board I bought at Bikerhiway.com http://www.bikerhiway.com/radiantz-led-tail-light-for-yamaha-road-star-and-vstar-p-176.html The are on 32 LED's but not all LED's are equal. These are the super high intensity LED's and they are BRIGHT! Even in the day time sun. Plus they are only $53.

06 Venture with a BANG! and a shriek...
juggler replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That darn fan belt - I kept a spare one with me at all times. -
Heck - with dealer attitudes like that even Second Gens are getting too old. My 1999 is ten years old now. The longer I own it the better I get at doing my own service work. I just can't afford another dealer messing it up again. I'm still trying to get my carbs adjusted right after the last dealer hosed them up.

Last year when working on my bike with Black Owl I was able to compare my HF click type torque wrench with his fancy digital one. I saw no difference in performance and my HF did the job just the same as the digital one. We did one bolt with the digital one then I used my HF one and it click out right away meaning the bolt was torque equally with both tools. ALL torque wrenches can go out of calibration. The amount of use they get and the way they are stored affects life span and accuracy. Even the old bar types can get out of calibration with use or damage by banging or bending. The click types can not be stored with the adjust screw set to ANY weight. You have to unscrew the adjuster all the way when storing the wrench.
