I and my wife swear by full face helmets. Your chin is one of the most common places that hits the ground IF you ever go down. I know that does not help your fears, but realizing that crashing can happen and preparing for it with the proper equipment is the smart thing to do. My wife was also afraid of wearing as full face helmet. She still can't even put some of them on her head. She did find that she can wear a flip face helmet. We have the HJC Symax helmets. They are full face helmets but the front flips up (chin bar and all). This allows my wife to put the helmet on with out panicking and then close the face when she is ready. Other brands allow the filp face to fold all the way over the back so it can be worn as a 3/4 helmet if desired. I really believe in the full face helmets and I will never use anything else. As for the rest of the passenger experience, once you get over the helmet fears your ride will improve with practice. Then you will enjoy the ride. "Cornering/leaning was especially frightening. Right hand turns were worse than left for some reason." If your left handed this makes sense. People seem to naturally lean better on corners the same as their primary hand. Cheers and safe riding,

We're leaving on Saturday September 27th and arriving in Mackinaw, MI on the 28th. On the way out we will stop in Iron Mountain, MI. We will be leaving on October 3rd and we'll be staying in Marinette, WI. The rest of the time we'll be staying in Mackinaw City itself doing day trips and sight seeing.

Yamaha did not fail in it marketing of the Royal Star Venture, they failed to market it at all. I do not ever recall seeing one ad for the bike, but it almost always sells well at the dealerships and very well in the used bike world. Brand new they have more for less and a 5 year warranty. I bought my '99 used 4 years ago with 53k miles on it. It now has over 76k miles on it and there is nothing wrong with the bike. All it needs is normal maintenance and tune ups. I find the 1300cc water cooled V-4 to be very powerful. You need to remember that it love to produce power at high RPM's and the engine is built for it. This weekend I pulled a trailer for the first time and I really did not feel the trailer behind me while at speed. When stopping I did not feel any noticeable pushing. The only time I felt the trailer was at low RPM's in first or second gear or when I hit a real big dip or bump in the road. I weighed my trailer fully loaded and it came in at 370 pounds. When I was looking to buy a touring bike I looked at wings and said "Yuk" and I test road a Harley Ultra and thought "This is all there is for how much $$$$$$$$$$$$" Yikes! Then my wife and I saw an ad for a used 99 Royal Star Venture. We had never heard of one so we went to test drive it and found it was great. We love the size of the big beast. It's physically bigger than any Harley and it had more than enough power for us. We said we would buy it so the dealer prepped it for us and we started researching the RSV that week. We took final deliver the next weekend and we've been happy ever since. Go test ride one. Actually I always say test ride them all and buy the one YOU like best. Cheers,

We just landed back at home about an hour ago. This years Pork in the Pines was a great success. Black Owl cooked up vats of his famous chili. The pig cooker performed perfectly, the pig (all 115 pounds) turned out great and it was fun eating. Cooking commenced early Saturday morning and wasn't finished until about 6pm. I ate several pounds of it myself. This year more people than ever camped at Gary's place turning his farm into a biker campground. A special thanks to Gary for providing his place for the rally. However, I think next year many people may camp on the other side of the farm AWAY from the ROOSTERS!!! They sure like to wake up early and cock-a-doodle-doo. We had rides on Saturday and Sunday as well as a maintenance day on Sunday. Saturday we had about a 170 mile ride on the backroads of Northern MN. Part of Saturday's ride was a quick stop at the Mississippi headwaters for those that had never been there. It's always great to walk across the mighty Mississippi. I am told Sunday's ride was also a great success. I was helping with maintenance day, but most of the crew went ona full days ride through more backroads which many of the Canadians tell me are better than their primary roads. On Sunday we set a record for us at Pork in the Pines. We successfully completed work on five bikes. That is four more than we've ever done in past years. (There was usually too much drinking and goofing off for any serious work to get completed. This year we did several carb syncs, plug changes and color tunes. Also a special thanks to Freebird for providing us with the Colortune. We successfully used it on three bikes on Sunday then we raffled it off. I forget who won it, but they are happy to have their own color tune now. Thanks Don!!! My wife is processing photos and I have a few hours of video from Saturday's ride to process and get posted. That should make it way here and to the Pork in the Pines website. Those in attendance were: Myself and Tigeress Black Owl GrandpaGak and GrandmaGak, Sarges46 (Rick) and Marilyn Red1 minnmac and wife Renate wild hair 39 krispy and wife Denise Rocket Norm and wife Kim noddy (Gord) and wife Laura Bubber and wife Luanne tessa c2 Lennie RedRider and son Grant Crowsnest (Brandi) and her man Crow Bigbob was in attandence via our thoughts and prayers. Those that have met him have always found him to be a great man. We pray for his recovery and look forward to seeing him again. Thanks to all for attending and making this years Pork in the Pines another successful VentureRider.org rally!!!

Ignore them - Staying away from the edge is "overrated", bring a barrel and have fun! The one time we were there (1998) We stayed on the Canadian side. There is more to do there than on our side.

It compares very well. It can read/write office 2003 and older docs. It handles power point stuff very well. I'm not sure how well the database translates to MS Access. But I never use that anyways. Plus: you can convert any document, spreadsheet, or slide show into a PDF with a single click. If your into Wiki then you can export your word doc as a wiki article. Like I said, I gave up on MS Office and have been using Open Office for years. The last version of MS Office I have is from 2000. It's free so it does not hurt to try it out. It won't interfere with MS Office. (I have both on my computer at work.)

Sounds like a donor bike for maintenance day. Put the parts on a trailer and bring it with. I'm sure it will get mostly put together by the end of the weekend.

I may finally have a reason to setup a Wiki account. We should get that page loaded with pictures of the various years and links to our history page or duplicate the history page on Wiki.

I've been using OpenOffice exclusively for a few years at home. If you have an Intel based Mac you can now get the OpenOffice 3.0 Beta 2 that runs native on OSX. Of course there is a Linux version, but I'm sure the Linux users here already know that.

All you need to do now is black powder coat the exhaust and other remaining chrome and you have your self a two wheel moonshine runner.

He looks a bit like the German Shepherd pups ours had back in the 70's. The markings are not always clear as a pup.

We saw her up close in St. Paul a few years ago. She and the Mississippi Queen and a few others made it up here for a big week celebration on St. Paul's river front. We've always wanted to take a vacation on her, but it's pretty darn expensive. I hope they are planning a replacement for her.

The Mississippi river is right outside my window at work and just down the hill from home. Which side do I have to be on to BBQ?
-
Not all of us northerners are confused by BBQ. I have a BBQ pit and a gas grill. I really love doing BBQ pulled pork and pork ribs. Personally I'm a dry rub BBQ'r but I use a vinegar based mop sauce that has brown sugar and crushed red chili peppers. Hmm, that adds some tang.

I know that in certain neighborhoods my bike's backfiring can cause gang wars. Darn thing sounds like a gun being fired. Once in a tunnel I was decelerating and it backfired. It sounded like a howitzer cannon being fired.

Yes, but too bad those were computer generated also. So much of these Olympics was faked in an attempt to make the rest of the world believe that China is a superior nation with a superior way of life. However, in order to pull the wool over our eyes our news media has to play along. Most did so dutifully, but other sources of the news showed the truth. What the mainstream media failed to report was the lip-synced performance of the young Chinese girl, because the young girl that did really sing the song was in their terms 'ugly' or that the fireworks shown on TV during the opening ceremony were computer generated. Then there are the serious itmes, like the continued arrests of Christians on the grounds of violating the Chinese official religion. Or just imprisoning anyone that does not agree with the official Government line. I could not support the Communist China Olympics.
