  1. I repacked mine at 26k. It was a pain but there was also plenty of grease in there from the factory. I cleaned out the bearings and repacked them with black moly. Since the bearings only travel a small amount, not like a wheel bearing, I believe that one packing should be sufficient. If you feel play with the swingarm it may be time for a new bearing. As far as adding a grease fitting I believe this was also discussed years ago. It seems the bearing rides in the cavity of the cross tube of the swing arm, if memory serves me, and its not in an enclosed area. You would almost have to pack the whole inside of the swingarm with grease. Most likely you would have to weld in some stops with the races removed, but somehow I dont think that was feasable. One more thing: Make sure you have a good quality allen socket when you torque those swingarm bolts back to specs. I think they torque to 76 ft lbs and just as my torque wrench clicked the socket broke off in the hole.
  2. I went with the Barnett set-up 4 years ago, along with new carbon fiber discs. Havent had an issue yet. At 53k since you are already in there I would just go ahead and replace the discs too. If you see any burn marks on the steel discs or they are warped, replace them too.
  3. George, somehow I dont think thats what Bobbie had in mind when she asked you for a bigger rock...........
  4. I would certainely keep an eye on that rear tire for cracks, swells and lost rubber. Unless someone is running their tire 30 lbs less than it should be, or doing pit burnouts, then NO TIRE SHOULD LOSE RUBBER.
  5. Rear......
  6. I use my Sears jack raised all the way up to remove my tire. Before I had the Carbon One adapter I used the old tried and true method....hockey pucks! The adapter is much better though. once the jack is properly centered I raise it into position then set it down on its lock bar into the top notch. I then strap the bike to the jack. Remove both mufflers and I usually remove the frame that rides under the saddlebags. Caliper comes off and bungied to the side. I then take a car floor jack, coming in from the right side, raise it under the rear tire just till it touches. you can then pull the wheel off of the hub and onto the jack, rather than wrestling it down. Once it clears you can now lower it down. A little finagling and its clear of the bike. Just reverse the jack thing for installation. Sure beats humping that heavy rear wheel back into position. Nows the time to clean and lube the hub. I have had this bike raised so many times and it has always been stable. Both wheels off, swingarm off, etc with no issues. A little common sense applies here. I mean, dont plan on having a wrestling match on the raised bike. If your determined enough, you can knock it off the lift. One advantage of the Sears jack is that it has these stablizing bolts on either side and once raised you turn these down for ground contact.
  7. I have 2 pairs of HD boots and they fit nicely. My HD buddies were breaking my chops about riding a Jap bike and wearing HD stuff. I told them that since the main logo is on the sole, I can mash the logo into the ground anytime I choose.
  8. Squid, the ground end was melted on mine too. Maybe it was underinflated too:pushups:
  9. Metzler must think that we are all a bunch of ******* morons. Maybe when someone gets killed will they do something about it. Heck, ill be the first one on the witness stand for the plaintiff.
  10. Thanks Muffy.......By the way..Lisa Lampanelli put on an awesome show too..LOL As far as the plug goes, after we disassembled the plug, we found that yamaha did a very through job of "trying" to keep out the elements. The holes where the wires feed into the plug have a rubber seal on each one and the plug itself has a yellow insert that also has a rubber seal around it. Yet moisture and corrosion still found its way inside to wreak havoc. I couldnt believe what a poor fit the factory connections make on the blades. Every connection I tried was able to rock back and forth and had very little resistance when pulling the connector off of the blade. I wont even attribute this to being worn, considering that the regulator has only been off of the bike 3 times. Ill just say that this was/is a learning experience. You got to figure that a 10 year old bike is going to start to have some issues, especially living down here in FL where the humidity plus living a few miles from the ocean would corrode most components on a bike. You all gave me valuable advice and assistance with this. Had I just taken it to a dealer im sure the labor costs would have been astronomical. :mo money::mo money:Thanks everyone.
  11. That was the plug for the stator, not the rectifier.
  12. Got the problem down to a bad plug, the one that plugs into the rectifier. Took it apart and a connection is melted in there. Im now trying to locate another plug so if anyone here has one laying around let me know please.
  13. Spoke with GeorgeS for a while on the phone tonight. He gave me some direction to start with, along with a very thorough electronics lesson. When we were done I had a much better understanding about charging systems and their issues. Most likely its the plug, whether its corroded or loose. Ill run some DMM tests on it tomorrow am. LetHimRide will be over in the AM and we will go through it. One more question though...does anyone know where the main ground lug is located on the 2nd gens?
  14. Squidly who????
  15. Only thing extra is the driving lights and some led tail lights. Nothing big, but a 55W stator should handle it. Im gonna try this solution first tomorrow am and go from there. Thanks all for the ideas.
  16. I need someone whos very well versed in the RSV charging system to step in here. I have had this charging system issue on and off since last summer. A new rectifier last year solved the problem. I had also replaced the sidestand switch. This year the stator went and I replaced it with the higher output one from Buckeye Performance. Still had an issue so I went ahead and replaced the rectifier again. The bike ran fine for a few hundred miles then it began discharging again. I got it home and replaced the battery with a new, higher powered battery and still the bike is discharging. At 2500-3000 RPM's the DMM reads 12.10 V. I am at a total loss now. I will say that from the time I noticed the gauge flashing red I had about a 40 mile trip back home. A few times the bike began charging again then went back to flashing red. All connections are clean and tight and contact points are lubed with dielectric grease. So, anyone here got any ideas....Since I got the stator from Buckeye, RickH, you have any ideas? Squid, Muffy..Goose?? :bang head:
  17. This should solve your clamp problems.... http://www.chopperscycle.com/page/VTS/PROD/42-264/24032 I have them on mine and they look great. Just a tip: prior to assembly I coat the pipe and the inside of the muffler with some anti-seize compound, not a lot, just a schmere. It makes it slip on easier and removal is easier too. I also push it on as far as it goes then, protecting the back of the muffler with a wood block, I give it a few "love taps" with a dead blow hammer to seat it all the way.
  18. Just wait till Jeffy "Flies the Chair"............
  19. Your so right Dano..I should learn to respect those antiques........ Congrats, Adam. I wasnt sure if you went ahead with the purchase.
  20. Naaa, it wasnt a red/sand color..more like a 2000 model. So Adam, did you get the other one yet?
  21. You mean I did all that work for nothing???:rotfl: Actually, im finding the Signal Dynamics LED light a bit too touchy for my tastes. I like the way the Kisan works, especially the number readout. That Kisan sure is pricey, though.....
  22. Saw a red RSV being towed on a trailer (gasp!) behind a Chevy Tahoe or Surburban about 1030 AM yesterday heading south on I-95 in Jacksonville. Anyone from here and will he have the chutzpa to admit it???
  23. Patience is a virtue with the charging system......
  24. Be safe Thom and keep us updated......
  25. Whew..I thought Squid was going to mount.....er, nevermind...
