Stock rotors work just fine. Just remember that the R1 calipers eliminate those caliper brackets. Bolt them directly to the fork bosses. I also replaced the rear line with a SS one and rebuilt my rear caliper with fresh HH pads as well. Clutch SS line too. Flushed the whole system with Motul DOT 5.1 brake fluid, which has a higher boiling point then DOT4. (not to be confused with synthetic 5 fluid). Earl has a nice kit. You wont be disappointed.

I have the R1 upgrade on my 99 along with a Vmax splitter. So far im satisfied with it. Braking improved maybe 15-20% over stock but that also includes the addition of SS lines. Hard stopping improved overall compared to the stock brakes. Havent had them lock up either. Looks cool too!

Ignition switch question
1BigDog replied to wes0778's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Next best price was 160 at Seattle sports plaza. Last year I paid 124 from Part Shark so the 135 price is still in line. The 220 price is full MSRP. -

http://www.partshark.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=35185&category=Motorcycles&make=YAMAHA&year=1999&fveh=894 Wes, heres a link for part shark. At 135 bucks its probably the best price you will find for a new switch. Its #6 on the fiche. Those anti theft bolts are a real pain though. I used a dremel to cut a slot into the bolts then used an impact driver to loosen them. The bolts that hold your handlebar risers are the proper size replacement bolts for the ign switch. -
Guess im one of the lucky ones. Mine is working fine......so far...

Dead Clutch, second time.. argh

I recently did the Advanced Rider Course with no clutch issues, however I am running the Barnett conversion kit and carbon fiber discs in there since 2004. I also dont feel our bikes lend themselves well to the "Friction Zone" methods. As far as gaskets go, I make my own. I bought a sheet of rubber impregated gasket material for 4 bucks and since have made about 6 different gaskets which would have cost me well over 40 bucks if purchased from Yamaha. One more thing: you might consider buying a bottle of DOT 5.1 brake fluid for the next clutch fluid change since it has a higher boiling point then DOT4. (not to be confused with "5" fluid) -
Finally got around to installing the window regulator today. I compared the replacement part with the original. Mounting brackets, cables, tracks all looked the same, not some close imitation. Im very happy with Rock Auto and will use them again.

Those end tabs are a common breakage issue. Dealer replaced my outer on my 99 back in 03 due to it. He wasnt happy but once he confirmed it with Yamaha he had to do it. As long as it wasnt obviously in an accident there should be no reason for the dealer NOT to replace it. If he balks and tries to say that since you took it apart its your fault, stand your ground or find another dealer. Splitting the fairing isnt rocket science but obviously the tech (and I use that term loosly) never got past the paper plane stage when he assembled it the first time. Windshield should not have been loose either, obviously. Make sure he, or yourself notifies Yamaha if he refuses to do so. Its still under warranty, so........

No way!!! NY Pizza is the best. From the properly rolled thin crust, with a nice slightly burnt underbelly, the sauce, not too sweet, with the right amount of spices, to the layer of cheese, and most important....when you fold that slice and the olive oil drips off the point in a nice even drip then you just know that all's well with the world again.

I had to order DOT 5.1 online since none of the local stores carried it. A bit pricey too. I used Motul 5.1 not to be confused with DOT 5. 5.1 has a higher boiling point and so far here in the heat of Florida it seems to work better then the DOT 4. Or maybe the heat is just playing tricks with my mind....

Im saying the original thin diaphragms found on the 83-85 models were no good. The replacement ones, which were thicker, were better. I believe that the thicker ones also required that a different spring be used as well. Keep in mind that when I refer to them as thicker, what im saying is the newer diaphrams are made slightly heavier to keep them from tearing. Im not saying that your are bad and since your bike is alrealy 27 years old its possible that those original diaphragms were already replaced at some point. Just giving you something to look at though.
