  1. I got a set of these passenger pegs from @RDawson today and installed them right away - here are some pics of them mounted! Good quality parts and very easy to install, everything lines up perfectly and both pegs just clear my rear crash bars that wrap around the luggage boxes! I used some blue loctite in the new passenger peg bolt as well as the bolt that holds together the new aluminum peg since that one seems the most likely to potentially loosen over time. My wife has some knee issues from a ballet background and its tough for her to ride more than 1-1.5hrs at a time without stretching her knees out so when we saw these on Dawson's bike at the Asheville 2022 meetup, she was excited to order a set next time Dawson had them available. Thank you Ronnie! She will appreciate these on our ride down to the Vogel meetup in August 2023!
  2. That was me... Drew & Liz. Actually messaged @Woody today to see of Asheville was on for this year. This Vogel trip sounds great tho and already spoke to my wife and we are planning to come. Reading thru this thread, looks like it may be tougher finding lodging but I will see what I can find and book it asap. If anyone knows of any places that still have room available, would be great to hear from you. We look forward to seeing you all again!
  3. Sorry for the late reply, work has been crazy lately and haven't logged on in a few weeks. You have probably already figured this out or gone with one of the other options given here but here are a couple pictures of when I did mine. I believe this cap in the pics is what you are referring too? I didn't see a way to separate it properly either so I just pulled it back as much as it would go and left it attached while I did the point re-build. Just gotta remove the screws that hold the points to the pump and use solder iron to separate the ground wire and then reverse it all to re-install. I hope replacing the points worked for you if thats the option you decided to use! I have torn my bike down pretty far the last 2 winters as I wanted to go thru everything to ensure it gives me reliable service for many years and so far the only thing I haven't been able to figure out is why my fuel meter will not work properly... when ignition on the fuel guage gives me the 8 blinks (doesnt read the current fuel level) which in the service manual means the fuel guage assemble (potimeter I think?) inside the tank is bad. I replaced everything inside the tank the 1st time with a new Yamaha OEM part and it did the same thing and still didnt work so I exchanged the part thinking I just got a bad part from Yamaha.... but the 2nd one did exactly the same thing so I guess there is something else somewhere causing the issue tho I havent personally been able to narrow down any other potential issues (When I ohm the wires that all tests good too)... so I just trip my mileage meter each time I fill up. I LOVE how easy this bike has been to work on/upgrade and having this group has been incredible since anything I cant figure out, someone here knows!
  4. Oh... here is the item# for the point set you would want to purchase if you decide to go that route. Believe I purchased mine from Ebay
  5. 20k miles, could definately be the contact points wearing out.... one thing to note is that I have seen fuel pump work fine at idle or just revving the engine but then stop working once you are at hwy speeds since its not able to keep up with the required fuel supply to the carbs. The only tricky part of replacing the points is having a solder iron, if you have one of those its a pretty simple job. If you open up the pump and look at the points you can typically tell what kind of shape they are in, they will start wearing really uneven. I changed out my contact points last summer to prevent an issue since my contacts had some pretty uneven wear. A pic attached showing worn contact points at 28k miles and here is a link from the Facebook Yamaha Royal Star Venture Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/135373523171973/search/?q=fuel pump points
  6. Liz & I have had a great time! Excellent riding in the mountains here and great meeting/talking with new like minded people. We are looking forward to the next one already. -Drew
  7. Wife & I will be there on Thursday sometime early afternoon - we are staying in the T-6 cabin on the river and will come over to T-24 in the early evening after people are back from riding. Safe travels, we look forward to meeting everyone! Drew & Liz
  8. If it was working well before then is sounds like maybe you have a clog? There is a small hole at the bottom that reservoir that can get clogged pretty easy with any piece of trash....it can be hard to see that hole too if the fluid is dirty, maybe a paperclip or needle to explore once you suck out the existing fluid? I use a syringe to remove old fluid. Usually a really good cleaning along with a full fluid flush will solve issues like that (DOT 4 fluid from a new unopened bottle). I use a vacuum pump to pull new fluid thru, just make sure you don't get any air bubbles in the system or it will take a lot longer to get it working properly. Good luck with it, nice that you were so close to home!
  9. Welcome, this is also my first large touring bike (2012 RSV) and I find it really comfortable compared to the many bikes I have had over the years. I have been riding street bikes my entire adult life and started racing motorcross when I was 11. I turn 45 this Dec & bought my first street bike (a new Yamaha FZR600) when I was 17 and have had an assortment of rockets as well as a few cruisers like vmax, shadow's, etc. I totally concur with Arizona that the highway pegs make a HUGE difference in comfort cause you can stretch out in multiple positions on longer rides and I also have the Utopia driver backrest which is also huge for me as I can use the hwy pegs to push back into the backrest and stretch my back periodically. All that said and having the factory pillowtop seats, I also do not like the way it feels like it pushes me into the tank and after a few hours I start getting restless, I have some old back injuries from my days of riding motorcross/supercross so that definately contributes. I plan to scoop out my driver seat some and replace the stock foam with something maybe like memory foam? Any recommendations from people who have already done something like this? I have seen a couple threads where people have changed the factory design of the seat and talked about how it help for comfort on longer rides. Maybe someone already has a rough template they could share for those of us who are looking to do a mod like this?
  10. Message @Heartbeat and he can make/send you keys. I have a 2012 RSV and last Sept I sent him some detailed pics of the keys and he sent me a few new ones since my bike only came with 1 key. They work great, believe they are factory blanks as well.
  11. I joined VentureRider last Fall shortly after buying my 1st RSV. Lot of value in being a member of a good forum like this and really appreciate all the knowledge I have gained from members here... spent the winter going down a rabbit hole and had the bike stripped down its underwear (OCD like that), I have bought parts from several members and did many upgrades over winter, been riding it anytime I can leave the truck at home :-). Took a little getting used to the size of this beast but I really enjoy riding this couch around, most comfortable motorcycle I have owned! Honestly I am hooked now and doubt I would own anything smaller in the future and thinking at some point down the line I will likely transition into a trike when the time is right. Anyway, the wife and I love Asheville and only live a couple hours away. I just booked a cabin for Aug 18 & 19 (on new map its DC-6, located on the river & on the old map its listed as T-6). Had to find a cabin with a bathroom if I wanted the wife to come, lol. We look forward to meeting everyone! -Drew
  12. I just happened to see this on ebay the other day... there are a few styles and the bar appears to have the correct bracket on it? https://www.ebay.com/itm/173006761061?_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item284801ac65:g:TcwAAOSw7WBe4eLF&amdata=enc%3AAQAGAAAA8Jh5QhczPe5mtwSYdpKdm70YNWnL0GmbHpiKJOU3CxZEbICxYUMdsMEr7Wz%2Fqc9Ddjq3F2l%2BnHeEB2Stdsh1IiHyob98%2BN55MevLG6b0qz84XYjWJBC5YyofP59DQg4xn5cvB9yNv%2B0SvbDQVU1qLWKGh%2F0x4MeQ%2B3W90PfsVVHm4%2Ff7DubrVNdY50omeSStTpD6FS%2FQC5f3%2BPLZu888DLahpCx9i3GomHSznkCZymPZSWCREVtraB4f9ggyWu%2BfqtG%2FcEkinvVlKnE9af3hJLbh%2BH9M4pykXvxyHI%2FWLEw7UaqlpfFSDy9DMOQ6Cx%2BGFg%3D%3D|tkp%3ABFBMgKLe0Idg
  13. Sorry I cant be of more help, electrical is not my strong suit. Couple links that may help? 1st link talks about how to check the coils using ohm meter.... https://www.justanswer.com/motorcycle/3vwfv-star-bike-wont-start-coil-there-type-crank-sensor.html Have you checked the electrical connections at the harness you have to disconnect to remove the tank? Guessing you have already checked all your fuses.... but behind the passenger foot peg cover on left side you have a fuse box with mostly 10 & 15 amp fuses (should be a couple spares in the box). Behind that cover is also the the starter fuses... and 1 of the 2 30 amp fuses is an extra fuse. Here is another link from this forum from back in 2014 - no spark issue with several good ideas to look into.... look at Post #9 for an idea on spark & then post #18+ (sounds like a bad ignition switch was his culprit?).
  14. The member I got the plug/play bypass relay is @djh3
  15. I am new here so could be off base.... but have you pulled the gas tank and checked your ignition wires? I have heard too much power is routed thru there and a member here sells a bypass relay (which I bought and installed as a preventative). May be worth pulling your gas tank to check, there is a bundle of wires/harnesses directly under the tank behind the ignition. Its the red/pink harness connector and I have attached 2 documents that came with my bypass so you know what to look for. Also a 3rd document on how to repair the actual ignition switch if that is what went bad. Good luck tracking down the issue! 16. I have the utopia backrest on my 2012 RSV. Love how easily it conforms to your riding position, moves with you as your re-position, etc... most comfortable backrest I have ever used.
  17. For what its worth, I recently bought a 2012 RSV and while doing pre-purchase inspection I noticed a bunch of oily substance coating the bottom of the carbs, some in that center twinkie area and a LOT coating basically the entire rear (bottom half) of the engine, I needed a flashlight shined up under the gas tank area to realize it was coming from the top of the engine area somewhere... I bought the bike anyway crossing my fingers that it wasnt a serious issue since I had a feeling it was related to the emissions since before I went to look at the bike I did a bit of digging on the RSV and found some bikes had this issue. 1st thing I did was rip down the top half of the bike and it ended up that 1 of the 2 small hoses that connect to the bottom of the airbox nipple on the left side had popped off some time ago and it had been dumping this for quite some time now. Believe its the motorcycle version of what a PCV valve does on a vehicle. I want to figure out a way to make some kind of a catch can or delete this completely since it made a huge oily mess, also no way the engine can be running optimally trying to process that much oil thru the airbox. Wondering if the valves being adjusted may reduce the amount of oil that gets dumped out? (I also know from reading here that making sure the oil is no higher than half way up the sight glass makes a big difference and the PO definately had too much oil in there). Different thread tho, not trying to take this off track. Anyway.... I mention this just in case you have something similar going on and its not related to the twinkie gasket. May be worth checking
  18. Thread revival here: I recently bought a 2012 RSVS - funny cause my wife also followed me home and told me I wasn't visible at all, big black bike with a large trunk and only the single stock brake light. I am looking to do exactly what you did (great looking job), been having trouble tracking down a new or used wing. If anyone can point me toward one, that would be great! I would like to light it up to be a lot more visible from the sides and the rear. Almost every close call I have had in the past 25yrs of riding has been related to cars moving into my space cause most people dont pay attention to their surroundings, bright lights may help increase awareness. This is my 1st touring bike, love how smooth it handles. So far I have converted all the bulbs to LED. Previous owner had already done an aftermarket LED headlight and the 2 running lights. I have bought a variety of LED's that I am going to wire in when I can figure out a tasteful way to do it but plan to have lights on the back & sides of the saddle bags and the trunk. Hopefully I can also track down a wing and copy you. Great job on the wing install!
