black sooty build up.....
big mike replied to big mike's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks guys. I'll give it a closer look this weekend I guess. Hope it's not the valve cover, looks like a job!!! Anyhow I appreciate the feedback. Big Mike -
I have a black sooty build up on my left front cooling fin on the engine.(while sitting on bike.) It is on the upper part of the fins........well I guess the best way to describe it is a picture. Has anyone seen this before, and if so does anyone know what it is? Thanks for any help, Big Mike

Hey jfoster, You need to get your factory seat modified by Rick Butler....it's called the butt Butler seat mod. I have a 99 Venture and until I got a backrest like you I had a hard time riding for more than 250 miles. However when I got the seat mod at M.D. this year I was able to do 4-500 miles in a day. Dont get me wrong I was tired after those rides, but my rear was much much better. Rick shaves your seat foam to allow for more relief in your hind end and also cuts out a v for your tailbone to set into. He then puts on a memory foam that he contact cements to your original foam and recovers it with your cover. Trust me when I say your arse will love you. Try it You'll like it!!!! Big Mike

Well M.D. was a great time this year.(my first ever) My uncle and brother only had good things to say about how awesome this group was, and how they felt like insiders not outcasts. We had a mini vacation planned so we pulled into Dons around 2200 on Friday and TRIED to set up MY TENT!!! That was a joke in itself all weekend. Thanks to several onlookers it only took us 6 people to get it set up. (thanks Squidley, Lonna, and others) We then talked to several of the members that I have only met on this forum. In the a.m. we went to town for breakfast and gas and came back to start M.D. My uncle would like to insert here that having never met or talked to Squidley, he was very impressed that he had no problem looking at and trying to tune the carbs on his 1984 goldwing. P.S. Squidley, he said it improved the performance on the rest of the trip and said to thank you. I had the Butler mod done to my seat on my 99 Venture, and the rest of the trip I was the one trying to get the other two to quit stopping! What an awesome improvement for the seat, Thank You Rick!!! We then ate lunch and I was pushed to leave early since we had a long trip ahead of us. Half way out of Ohio I wanted to turn around because I had forgotten to find Lonna and get a piece of the strawberry rhubarb cheesecake she had made at my request:( I am so sorry I missed that Lonna, i'm sure it had to have been awesome. We finished our four day weekend with riding Red River Gorge, Nada Tunnel, Natural bridge, and then rode to southwestern Indiana for a night. On Monday we rode back to Michigan. In all we rode four states in four days and had a total of just under 1500 miles. Oh and did I mention it was sunny for the whole trip, with the exception of the last day, when we rolled back into Michigan. We did have some sun peaking through the clouds on several occations Monday, but a half hour from home we rode through the only rain we seen the whole trip and it made up for it. We ended up riding through a tornado warning area where they were evidently told to take cover. We rode through without injury fortuanatly, and have memories to share for a lifetime. So I figured I would share some pictures of this great time. Big Mike P.S. thanks to Eck for my cover and manuals. P.P.S. The blasting zone pictures have a special meaning.....My brother works with a guy who calls sh...ing, BLASTING!!! He says he feels it is a nicer way of saying it, I couldn't stop laughing when I heard that. So we thought we would get these pictures and install one on the inside of the bathroom door and one on the outside of the bathroom door as a practical joke!

Yea..... Squidley warned me of that today as a matter of fact, but this is the first sighting I have seen in picture form. It is a scary sight I must say!!! Have you tried turning this in at the local newspaper? I hear they pay big for that sort of thing.....as long as they haven't been altered....say, the one I heard about was a little more hairy than that!!!! right Squid??? Oh well, maybe he'll show his face again this year and we'll get some more pics to share:) Big Mike

Hi Guys. I have a big 10'x18' tent that sleeps 7. I will only have 3 people in it for M.D. I would be willing to have 2 more share it if they would like. That would probably be the comfortable limit for adults. It will have me, my brother and my uncle sleeping in it on friday night, and then we will be departing after saturdays events are over, so it's a one night free hotel thanks to Don. Any takers? First two people to post will have dibs!!! Big Mike

I just got back from a 250 mile round trip to visit with Brad and Lonna, and have brad help me tune my carbs. (well...Brad did all the work, and this was the true reason for the visit!!) Mind you I have never met either of them in person. They invite me to their house. From the time I roll in I felt like we were old friends. They both were happy to meet me and help me make the bike tip top. Well I must say....Brad YOU ROCK my friend. When I pulled into your drive my hands were almost numb from the vibration in my hand grips. I atributed that to my pipes, as that is when I started to notice the vibration. When you were tuning them you said they were not too far off, I must say they must have been farther off then they should have been because I had next to nothing for vibration on the way home. The bike is way more responsive than it had been and now I see more of a need for the clutch kit that is coming. I think I burned more fuel......it's not your fault though.....I couldn't keep my throttle in a steady place due to the new improved performance. I'm sure I must have put a dent in the bug population since I couldn't keep my teeth from showing. I must say this is the most friendly site I have ever been associated with and the people in person are nothing short of extrordinary. It was truely a pleasure to meet both of you and I look forward to M.D. to meet many more. Lonna, Holli doesn't have any rhubarb. Hollar at me if you need anything, especially if you want me to be the guinea pig for any of your taste tests! Well I wouldn't want to have anyone here trying to lose weight have to do it.(I gave up on loseing weight when cheescake is around!) See ya soon. Thanks, Big Mike:dancefool:

A friend of mine just bought a hypercharger for his 1100 V-star. He hasn't found a mechanic to install it yet, but has some questions about perormance improvements. Does anyone know how much of a seat of the pants improvement this will make? If rejetting is necessary? How much this affects milage?(milage! you don't put a hypercharger on for milage?!) Also does anyone know of a good mechanic that he can trust this fix to, near Holly,Mi. Thanks in advance, Big Mike

I just got off the phone with PCW and ordered a clutch kit for my 99 Venture. Well not the whole clutch kit, but the new improved spring, gasket, and full clutch disk. The guy I talked to was great. He asked me some questions about my bike to make sure I was ordering the right stuff for my situation. He didn't try to over sell me on anything. I mentioned this site and he said he has dealt with many of us here and everyone he has dealt with has had good success with these kits, even the trailer pullers. So does anyone have any feedback on how they liked the PCW kit, or how it is working. Any suggestions or things I should look for while doing the repair? Also is it something I should save and do at M.D. at Freebirds. I should be getting the parts on Monday or Tuesday, HOWS THAT FOR SERVICE!!! Big Mike....Who cant wait for M. D. YEEEHAWWW

Noisy front brake and squeaky rear shock
big mike replied to greyghost's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
For your brakes use some brake quiet available in part store. For shock, http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2220 use this link from this site. Rick Butler had a great write up in this link to help fix the squeek. Hope it helps, Big Mike -
No problems in wmp. Music and talk!:rotf:

I'm considering a purchase this week of a carbtune pro from morgan directly. is this a good decision or is it better to go through a local distributor? If local any suggestions? Thanks, Big Mike

Thats pretty cool. Nice touch. Just a question for you virago enthusiasts, what year did they quit making the 920 Virago. I have an oppertunity to look at one for my brother, but the guy that is selling it doesn't know what year it is, he's selling it for his daughter, who dumped the boyfriend she bought it for. Thanks, Big Mike

Waddaya worried about your leg covers it! Besides it's not like it's a second gen or anything. Just kidding, that really sucks. I had a 78 Honda 550 that was far from perfect, and got pretty ticked off when my belt put a nick in the paint. Just put your bike away and anything else you don't want to get hurt and tell your wife you'll give her several more chances to get the lawnmower thing right!!!!!!!!! Big Mike......who just wants to hear about someone else making a mistake like that for a change. P.S. let me know how that works out for ya!...on second thought don't do it, i'd like to see you get several more years of riding in.

Harley FLT 1584 pipes
big mike replied to YamaDuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I Googled your part number and came up with an FLHTCUI which is an ultra classic harley. Those pipes should slip on and work just fine for you. The 1584/1688 signify engine ci's....96ci for the 1584cc not sure about the 1688cc but these pipes will fit either and also our bikes. Good luck. P.S. I found this site helpful as far as the exhaust goes, some pictures, sound clips, and alot of info. Just scroll to the bottom and click on free tech info. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/?action=category&cat_id=002 Big Mike -
Probably 2 sided tape. (hope they shaved:scared:) Oh.....and what's with 'em tryin' to pull 'em up all the time??? Maybe they buy 'em that way because their brains think backwards....most people think of being able to one day fit into a smaller pair of pants, is their goal just opposite?!!?!! Big Mike......who hates seeing butt crack!!!
