David, Yeah, post it if you don't mind. John is his Star chapter president in Manassas, Va. That might get them in touch. Star has some benefits that may help if needed. Thanks, Mike G

David, If you get the chance, Ben had asked for contact with John Zellers in VA. John's cell is 540-717-0611. Tell Ben I talked to John to get him up to date (from what I've read on this forum), but I didn't have a contact number to give John. I also copy/pasted Ben's posts to Star Touring, he has several well wishes there too. Thanks, Mike G in SC

Ben ( or someone who can phone contact Ben & give him the # below), I just talked to your friend, John Zellers in VA. He gave me his cell # 540-717-0611. I gave him updates from your posts. You can hear the concern in his voice, he sends his best. So if you can get Sis to dial him, he sure would like to hear from you. I don't know if you want to put a contact# here(?). Mike G in SC

Mike G in SC EDIT: Ben, also just sent email msg to John Z and left a voice mail on his home phone. You are getting good wishes on the ST site too. Visit when you can www.startouring.com,,, do you remember your ID&PW or is that built in to home PC? I didn't have any Charleston contact # to give him. I can foreward if you need mikeginsc@bellsouth.net

Ben, Glad to see you posting already. Thankful all survived as good as they have. I'm taking the liberty to move your quote to the Star Touring forum so they will also know of your wreck, but even better, your status now. Someone from the Charleston chapter may have already contacted you. Take care Gamecock, the Dragon can wait. Mike G in SC

Mark, That was a good buy. Fun too. Glad to see a young man ask for free advice. Most don't. Think he will be happy with the ride and 5 year warranty on the NEW 06. Mike G in SC

Okay kid, You got us wondering where it went,,, when you said "tomorrow". Especially as this has turned into a family thing (and this is a big family). And Dad was not running negative. That's always good. If you don't think it is a good deal, at the price you already negotiated, just post the dealer name and location here,,,, and I'll bet someone else with connections here has it in a week. I think my local dealer will give bike buyers 20% on accessories (Yamaha OEM) for a period of time, like your dad said. I got my bike used at a good price, so I can say this: Don't listen to us who tell you how much we saved on a used bike. You are looking at a NEW bike. The sweet part of this deal is the FULL 5 year warranty. They don't break often but that warranty is a real good piece of mind equalizer when something goes wrong. (Fuel pump $350, rear shock $600 and that's just parts.) AND,,,, if you do turn it around in, say 4 years,, the remaining 1 year warranty will be a BIG selling point. (And, speaking like a dad, put as much down as you can and pay it off as quick as you can, so if you do want to sell it then, it's all gravy.) Anyhow, Adam, let us know how it goes. Mike G in SC (with 63K+ on my 2006 RSTD. Don't tell anyone, but in about two years, I may look for a dealer left over '09 to start over with a 5 yr warranty. Even if I have to go to TX to get it.)
-
If it comes with the full 5 year warranty,,, then you are looking at a new RSTD. And,,,, they ain't making any more,, and I would vote YES on it. Does it have the warranty? Your other question is, do you hold on to a vehicle or do you jump around. I love my 2006 RSTD don't care about resale cause I plan to keep it. If you keep it, you will get your money out of it. Look into Startron by Starbrite. It's found in the boat section mostly. My Yamaha dealer put me on to it. It's kind of a cross between Seafoam and Stabil. It also is engineered to deal with Ethanol,,,, um, enzime action. Just google for Startron. I have found it more places lately, including Walmart and ordered through Ace. Also, Yamaha sells Ring Free. This is more to blow the crap out of the valves. It has a very concentrated version of Techron, found in Chevron gas. They suggest it as shock treatment for Roadstar sticky valve syndrom. But believers will take Seafoam to the grave.

I have a 2006 RSTD and a 2006 Strat. If my wife said I had to get rid of one,,,,, I sure would miss her. But, hey, really different rides,, a Caddie and a Vette. If I'm going the distance, I want the Caddie (RSTD). If I want a rocket, I take the Vette (Strat). If I want to take the wife,,,,,,,, I take the RSTD.

I have the Battery Tender Plus pigtail on my RSTD (directly to the battery). It runs the "Slime Sport Tire Inflator" just fine. This one: http://www.slime.com/product/111/Power-Sport-Tire-Inflator-(%2340001).html I like the size for a bike, has more connectors than you can use. (The pump comes with a pigtail. But the one with the Battery Tender is better quality.) Sells for $36.99 but O'Rileys gives me 10% off for being a Vet. I donate one of these as a door prize at our Star Touring Christmas party each year.

Hey, a FYI: If you ever loose your shifter bolt on the run, the side cover dummy bolts will do the trick till you can reorder a new one. (and use some Loctite) If you already know this it's because you once said "HOLY S*&%" when you started to downshift and your whole shifter flopped down on your floorboard.

Like Straycat said, Use a mirror on a stick (buy extendable mirror at cheap tool places),,, but also a small LED flashlight aimed down your sight angle really helps see in the window. Oh, and read it with bike level, not on kickstand. Using the mirror, going from kickstand to center you will see how much difference that makes. If you filled it on kickstand to the mark you would have way too much oil in it.

Yeah, same for me on the RSTD. I know this wasn't about RSTD but,,,, Leave the recurve out of it. Actually if I want to cut it down, that might be the place to do it. Also, the vent: it is probably needed on the RSV as there is little other air movement, but on my RSTD (with no fairing) I didn't have much use for it. Mostly left it closed, even in summer. I actually went back to my stock shield after one season. I think the stock shield is engineered for that bike. The wider Clearview picked up more broken air on the road at speed. (But yes, Clearview people are the best.)

Rates vary a bunch per state and now most companies also look at your credit scores. Here in SC I found that I got Nationwide (Victoria) for almost half of what Progressive wanted (who I left 2 years ago). I think I am paying about $400/yr for GOOD full coverage on my 2006 RSTD and 2006 Strat. Mike G in SC PS: I am dealing with USAA on an estate. Very good people but rates are not real competitive. My mom was paying more for one car than I do for two (similar coverage & value).

My clutch basket was replaced years ago. I get some wine from it sometimes, nothing bad. I had a friend replace my clutch and go to the Barnette plate a couple of weeks ago. On first long trip, coming home back roads just before dark yesterday, I heard the pitch go way up and loud. After a few seconds of thoughts passing through my mind, waiting for it to all come undone,,,,,, if dawned on me. I was going through a swamp area of the Edisto river. IT WAS THE HIGH PITCH DROAN OF A MILLION FROGS ALONG THE ROAD !!!! Really.

There's a lady rider out of Sumter SC. She rides with the Star Touring group there. Check with Extreme Sports Yamaha in Sumter if you are thinking of going pink, they know the paint shop. Yep, it's bubble gum pink.

Motel suggestion - Lake Lure, Chimney Rock?
Mike G in SC replied to Mike G in SC's topic in Watering Hole
Thanks guys, I started to book the Evening Shade (Bryan reference) but turns out is a far walk back from town, could spill a beer. Ended up googling and found the Carter Lodge more in the middle. Hey Jim, the Greenville SC M&G is not limited to SC,,, so join us. Stone Cold is coming. So is Papa Smurf. It's at the Olive Tree in Maudlin 3/27 @ 1:30 www.olivetreepizzagrill.com -
SC Star Touring chapters is having a Meet&Greet 3/27 in the Greenville area. I am looking for a one night (Saturday) motel stay for a few friends somewhere around Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, Bat Cave NC. (Prefere motel over cabin.) Bike friendly, reasonable cost,,,, and maybe a bar/grill in close walking distance. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mike G in SC

Buddy, We traded emails 1/14/10. The lower vents, I still didn't get them. If you shipped them, can you track them?? Thanks, Mike Griswold I have also sent you an email. Thanks.

I added the Kuryakyn LED charge monitor on my RSTD. After loosing a couple of stators on my R* and one on my RSTD, it was time to put an idiot light on it. Had it about 2 years, just fine, thanks. Removes some worries. Mike G in SC
-
Buddy, sent you Paypal $35 for the lower vents too. Smoke prefered, black okay. Thanks again, Mike Griswold Mike G in SC

I've done three used Yamaha's warranty transfers with my local dealer. All I had to show was my state registration, to proove it was mine, and the VIN and they went on the Yamaha site and put the warranty into my name. No cost to me. And they have honored all warranty work on each. If it is not that simple, try another dealer, they would love to have your warranty work.

Made the Greenville, SC show last year. Probably do it again, Jan 8-10 weekend.
