Installing Barons Lowering Kit
Mike G in SC replied to gaillarry's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Both my RSTD and RSV are lowered in the rear (Barons kit). But I didn't want the full 1.5". So, for both, I had a local fab guy make a pair for of links that are half way between the stock and the Barons links. So the rear is dropped more like 3/4". (Someone here said for each 1/4" you add/sub on the links you lower/raise the rear 1".) Makes a lot less muffler scrapes, less on the kickstand and handling is closer to stock but still give me a better footing at stop, with two up. On the RSTD, I'm also lowered 1/2" in the front. So, close to level. Would like to lower the RSV front 3/4" but,, not that adventurous. (Anyone in the SC area who's good at lowering the front on a RSV ($$) ?) Mike G.- 5 replies

Extreme Sports Yamaha in Sumter SC is having their spring open house event this Saturday, 5/7. As SC locals know, this is a GREAT dealership (just Yamaha's). See the flyer below,, free dyno, burn out pit, bike show, food. Thanks, Mike G http://www.extremesportsyamaha.com/ http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs014/1103168065038/img/32.jpg

The end weights on my 2006 RSTD are different from my 2009 RSV. The RSTD have a alan head bolt that goes through them and the shoulder is unthreaded. On my RSV, the weights are solid (no bolt) and are threaded on the shoulder to screw into the grips. So,, may be different. You may be able to tell from looking at the plastic plug on the end. The RSTD has a one about half dime size, the RSV is dime size. Mike G in SC

Cut the darkness.

Back to the PIAA question. I've had several of the Silver Star H4 headlights, nice while the bright lasts. But that's for about 50 hours. The PIAA seems to last like a normal bulb. And yes, it is much brighter than stock, but maybe not as intense as a HID. It appears white (not blue). And it is the white one, between to my yellow passing lamps! I buy the 2 pack from Amazon, $44/pr. Carry a spare. Amazon link: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/PIAA-10904-H4-Intense-White/dp/B000MG40QW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1303294083&sr=8-4]Amazon.com: PIAA 10904 H4 Intense White - H4 60/55W=135/125W Xtra Intense White Bulb, Twin Pack: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31E5YHnwdIL.@@AMEPARAM@@31E5YHnwdIL[/ame] And, yeah, who found LED replacement passing lamps,,, lately? What, where? (The marine lamps got pulled last year.) Thanks, Mike G in SC -
That's funny, my deductable is $500! But, not likely to live thru a fender bender to collect $100,,, or go to jail! Mike G in SC

The 2005-2009 RSTD can be lowered in the front,,,, Free Version. A friend did mine. You cannot get the same 1 1/2" as the Venture. You can get about 1/2" only. But for me,,, worth it. You only get 1/2" because the air valves will hit the handle bars if you go anymore. With that, I suffered no issues and got the results I wanted. I also have the Barons kit on the back but had fabricated dogbones half way between stock and Barons. So, I am lowered 1/2 in front and 3/4 in the rear. (I had the small tire at first, so it was 3/4 both.) You drop the tripple tree same way as the Venture (no fairing is nice). But my mechanic also figured out that with a little machining on the big washers and swapping them from top to bottom, you could get another little bit. If you do it, be sure and put a jack under the bike before you loosen it. You'll thank me later. Also, first measure the distance from the top of the air valve to the handle bars. That is the max you can drop it. If you go too far, you won't know it till you put it back together,,, . Like I said, though if you do the washer thing I mentioned, you can get another 1/4",, maybe. Anyhow, for your question about the front kit,,, for the 1/2" of change for the RSTD, I would not bother. Mike G

Where the HE$$ does the seat nuts go.
Mike G in SC replied to Eddie's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I get my son-in-law to pick up the bike and shake it. Big guy. Get Rick Butler's thumb-screw nuts, on the member vendor page. They are much easier to hold on to when you are taking them on or off. But,,,, buy 3 incase you drop one!!!!! Mike G in SC -

Johnny N., Buy a used Venture for journeys,,, and then maybe you can keep the Honda too for your daily commute. That's kind what I did. We enjoy 2 up on the Venture and I ride my RSTD daily to work and solo. And 80 sustained is quite comfortable on a good interstate. Mike G in SC

Question about the RSV Horn
Mike G in SC replied to dmoff1698's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Do the Stebil, and get the adapter and harness sold on this site. I've done it both ways, home made with notes,,, and from "stuff" sold here (Carbonone). It's just short of plug & play with the "stuff",, and looks like is belongs. (Don't spend the money to get the chrome horn,,, it's not.) And WOW,,, do they hear you! Mike G in SC -
Cruise Control quick engage trick?
Mike G in SC replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
On my RSTD last year, mine was failing miserably at interstate speeds. A few days before I was going to take it to the shop, I cut the tassels so they only covered the levers. NEVER had another issue, can engage 4th & 5th just fine. I had fought that for months. (I had suspected the tassel problem, tried holding my hands on the levers while engaged and it was still failing. So, I convinced my self it was mechanical,,,, till I cut the tassels off. I like the levers covered with leather, so on next bike put covers only.) I did get a kick the first time I used my cruise on my RSV,,, after being used to the RSTD. That same switch turns on the FLASHERS on the RSV! Mike G in SC -
The V&H Monster Ovals do sound great. Anyone know what model# fits the RSV? Would they be for a RK and need the adapters too? ,,,, sound great. Oh, but on the V&H, looking like closer to $800. (Edit: Actually if I look down on the Youtube post, the owner answered the same questions: "They are on right now for $662 part #1801-(should be #1801-311) fits 95-08 HD FLT/FLHT/FLHX" I see same model (#?) on Amazon.com for $603 today. So, looks like they do need the RK adapters. Mike G in SC

My Two-Up is a 2009 RSV, my daily commute (little bike) is my 2006 RSTD.

I also got the Wal-Mart ones (might have been Green Slime) a few years back. I posted, don't remember if it was this forum or another,,, but most people blasted the idea. And valid skepticism,,, You are relying on a pretty cheap plastic valve cap that keeps your valve stem open. Pretty easy for it to break and let your tire empty in a few seconds. What I did notice is that they were pretty uneven between caps. I prefer kicking tires, if it hurts, the tire is full. Just saying,,,,,,,,

"Darlene" has started to groan when I first mount her
Mike G in SC replied to bknsaddle's topic in Watering Hole
Same, 2006 RSTD (but more like @ 50k miles). Mine started groaning. After the dealer replaced the rear tire he said he saw a slight leak on the shock and had placed the order, warranty. I didn't have to ask him, he just took care of it. (PS: that good dealer is Extreme Sports Yamaha in Sumter, SC) If it is the shock,,, YOU WANT TO REPLACE IT UNDER WARRANTY$$$$$ Mike G in SC -
I've got a great "BOSS" 3 pocket windshield bag on my RSTD, love it. But I would like to know, what 3 pocket bag members are using on their RSVs? Web links would be good for pics and price. I have a wide F4 windshield without a vent. But I would say anything that fits stock will fit the same. Thanks, Mike G in SC

Did you see, when in the winner circle, he dipped down for a second to remove his retainer. The announcers missed it. Braces, turned 20 yesterday and won the 500 cause he knew what he was doing. Nice kid. Wish him luck.

Wally, Deer skin, unlined,, look into Lee Parks. http://www.leeparksdesign.com/catalog_items.asp?pagenum=1&uTotalRecords=&uLimitPartName=&uLimitPartNumber=&cat=530-3637&imgview=y I have bought them at the IMS. The "tour" size is about $85. THEY ARE GREAT. They have tour length and gauntlet. They also carry "outseam" stitch. I also stopped by Fox Creek Leather in Independence, VA. They stock them and were a few bucks (no pun) cheaper. http://www.foxcreekleather.com/67-lee-parks-motorcycle-gloves/127-deertours-motorcycle-gloves I have the tan color and black (one for each bike). Or I can mix & match so I know left from right!!!! I like the tan but they do tend to get stained. The black probably won't. Anyhow, really good gloves for everything but winter. Mike G in SC

I have Wanderer's "old Venture". He had a Khumo CT on the rear and he LOVED it. I put 1000 quick miles on it then changed out to a Venom before a big road trip. I could knit-pick,,, but I like bike tires. Can't publish what Wanderer said when I told him. LOL TED,,, Spring is coming. I will still gladly lend you the bike for a weekend if you come this way. Let me know. So,,, bike tire for me. Mike G in SC
