2002 midnight venture
Mike G in SC replied to masterofyard's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Shawn,, Sounds like the perfect deal. Maintained and the good price! Now,, you need to get in some good miles before your NY looses "riding season". (SC riders have read about that!) Congrats, Mike G -
A couple that used to ride with us,, the girl was 4'9" and she rode a Ridley Speedster. It's a 3/4 sized cruiser. It would go through the belt in 1000 miles. But it would do the speed, 70+.. We'd let her be ride leader. As people passed us on the interstate we got a whole lot of double takes and "look at that" as they rode by. It ended up really problem prone. When Ridley was at Myrtle Beach, they took it back west and sold it for her. But I swear it looked like a circus bear should be riding it,,,, 3/4 sized bike. Cute.

2002 midnight venture
Mike G in SC replied to masterofyard's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I would look for one with more miles, it ain't broke in yet! Actually, those miles are very low. So, could still have original 10 year old tires on it. If so, you would want to replace them regardless of tread. Even if not original find out how long they've been on the bike. Same for oil (engine and rear), how long have they been in there (not miles, time)? As you are in NY (is the bike too?) the oil could have season wear without miles. As far as price for the year (and low miles), sounds good to me for that money,,,, if it's in decent shape. So offer $5800 and see where it goes. But, if you have ridden it and like it, don't hold out too much, else it will get sold. -
Below is my from post on STAR Touring in a recent discussion on air horns. Remember when "It's imported" was exotic, not cheap? *************************************************************** I'm thinking the Stebel is made in Italy and the Bad Boy is made in China,,,, Hey, both are "imported"! My mom would say "it's imported,,,, it says 'China' " and then me give a smurk. China can make good stuff,,, if you pay them for quality. But,, manufacturers usually don't go to China for quality. They go there for legal knock-off's. My company makes V-belts. We make a quality belt for, say $4, sell it to the OEM service group for $4.50, they sell it to a Big Box Store for $12 and they sell it to you for $24. Well, we can buy the "same" belt from China for under a dollar. It does not have quality and will have a short life (and smells like cat pee) but the store will still sell you the belt for same $24. Can get even cheaper and worse from India. Sorry, that got off track from horns,,. I will agree, they are look alikes but I don't think manufactured by same OEM or country. Mike G.************************************************************* But in the '80s, I worked for Blue Channel, the major Blue Crab canner in the US. High quality, great tasting canned crab, biggest producer in the US. Well, Tiwan canned crab meat came on the market and within a few years, we were also buying it ourselves and selling two lines, Atlantic and Pacific to stay in the market. Well, fast forward a few more years and we were out of business,, could not compete. Similar to what my current employer is dealing with today. I don't politic it,,,, it's business. I try to buy the better quality product, and it will probably be "one of ours". Mike G

Actually, I find that, with the trailer attached, you are more stable in a parking lot. Kind of like a light hand on the back keeping you steady. Like going down a stars,, just a light touch on the hand rail helps keep your balance. But, yeah backing is like doing math while someone tickles your feet. Goes wrong way fast. More than once I have got off the bike and PULLED the trailer sideways to get it straight.

2 to 3 weeks? I might suggest you have plenty of time to think about a Harbor Freight trailer. Then you can even bring beach chairs,,, heck, maybe a Lazy Boy. I pull a trailer. Wife can fill it quick. But also, I bought a Revco 11x16 cooler rack for my RSV. I had to fab a new set of tail lights cause the tour bag hides the bike lights. But because my bike is lowered it puts too much weigh on the rear. I can actually carry more on my RSTD than my RSV. The RSV trunk is good but limited. Then when you put a tour bag on the luggage rack, you have that much more weight above your center of gravity. That's why a small trailer takes care of it all.

Winter Riding tips tricks and questions
Mike G in SC replied to muaymendez1's topic in Watering Hole
I replaced my chaps with ski pants. Very light weight, packs easy. Keeps it all warm. Wind chill is not a factor anymore. -
Magnets to make trafic lights turn green.
Mike G in SC replied to Flyinfool's topic in General Tech Talk
I have magnets strapped under both of my bikes. Rarely have a problem. If you can't find strong ones specifically for a motorcycle, go to Tractor Supply. Get "Cow Magnets" in the medical section,,, yeah "Cow Magnets". $8.95 for 3. SC did the two minute rule a year or so back. Never had to wait, Got Magnets. -
Allen, I shared this post with our chapter at our meeting last night. I got the biggest laugh of the night when I quoted your statement above. THANKS, Mike G

The horn can take it. (Talking Stebel) But depending on the mount bracket you use, the two connectors at the bottom may have to be bent inward, say 45 degrees to have them not touch the pipes. I found that with my RSTD when I used cheapo brackets from Lowe's. On my RSV, I got the stainless bracket from Carbon one (and his harness) and I did not have the same problem. But,, if the connectors touch the pipes, they can be bent in a bit. The relay can neatly fit inside the right side cover.

As noted, what you describe was not typical STAR club ride. While we may not quite resemble Shriners in a parade, most STAR chapters ride very organized with safety as much of a concern as enjoying the ride it's self. If you are still interested, please do look at another chapter.

Jose, In STAR chapters, only the president has to own a Yamaha (so I got two just in case! LOL). In our chapter, I'd say we are about half Yamaha,,,, half Harley,,, half Kawasaki,,, half Honda, and even a Victory or two. It's a good mix. You'll probably make some very good friends. And it won't be in any competition with your Venture Rider affiliation. Mike G

I might be biased,,, I'm president of the Columbia, SC chapter. I've been with STAR about 5 years. I enjoy the bike friends I have made. Most chapters are open and invitiing. When you get there, make your presence known to the chapter president before the meeting. (Tell them Mike G in SC sent you. They're sure to say,,, huh?) Likely you will fit right in. But if you don't "feel the love", try another chapter. (One of my members moved to another state. He did first try a chapter that didn't seem to throw out the welcome mat. He tried another and found "family" first meeting.) We meet monthly and have a "sanctioned ride" the following Saturday. But, we may ride several weekends any given month. Some chapters are a bit more by the book, mine is pretty casual. (I've just been pres for a year, previous guy made it casual,, we like it.) In the last year, STAR national has made an effort to be open and available. That area and the $48 a year seemed to be the beef (negative) with some folks. They are involved with a few charities but not pushy. To me, their best charity is the STAR Family Foundation,, which has a purpose to help members (15 mos or more) with hardships. I've enjoyed STAR. You can PM me or email me ( mikeginsc@bellsouth.net) if you have questions. And,,,, thanks for asking. There are several STAR members here. Mike G in SC
