  1. My experience with NGK Iridiums is, they last 30-40 k miles but also cost about 4 times as much. They don't perform "better", as far as HP or better mileage. So, advantage is if you don't like pulling wrenches, changing plugs is far in between. That said, on one of my Royals when I changed plugs after 30-40 k miles, I noted that,, oops,, they weren't the Iridiums. Just regulars. So, advantage,,,, price.
  2. I'm interested in this 20 year old Indian. Don't think the wife will let me. ,,,, SMOKING!
  3. Oh for the old days (70's). At 3-4 my son would ride on the tank of my 400 Kaw. I would strap a military belt around him and hook him to my belt and clamp his feet with my legs and go ride. Yes, we both wore helmets. And yep, rode him around town with folks pointing and waving. That was then. Now,,, well good advise above. A lot of liability is in play. I would even have a signed note from her folks and proper insurance. But, not trying to be critical, from what you have said, you need more time with your wife on the back to get 100% confident with a full sized (nothing personal Ma'am) rider. You do not want to have an accident with a child and be able to blame your own skills.
  4. Check in the VR classifieds, Vendor Member for Wild Bill (Bill Little). Bill installs them, but does not provide them. He also lowered my RSV and knows the bike well. I just talked to him yesterday about another matter. He is an engineer/mechanic. He will likely give you some pointers. Mike G in SC
  5. I've been thinking about a 14" but wide windshield for my RSV. Looked on-line but the shorter shields are 23", not 28" like my F4. I have a 17" F4 Customs that is great but want shorter. F4 Customs does not list a 14" that is wide (28"). After some posts here and other forums I left a contact to F4 on their website. The owner, Don Frank, sent back an email to contact him (or Kim) and they would custom make one for me. I will guess at about the same price. He is in Daytona this week, but I will contact him soon to make me a 13" or 14" full width shield. Will be great for warmer weather. Mike G in SC
  6. I am more worried about the Saint Christopher medal I stole off another bike and have on my Venture. Might be bad karma???? Okay, so I didn't really steal it,,,, it was on a used bike at a dealer in Camp Hill, PA. I was getting a new tire installed and looked at the used bikes. I saw a V-star 1100 and it had a brass looking St Chris clip on it. I took it off, and went to the cute girl at the service desk and asked if I could have it. With a couple hundred for the rear tire, and another $70 to replace the valve stem they found on the front,,, she said sure. I don't think that was "sure sucker". Anyhow, I win,,, St Chris trumps those superstitious silly gremlin bells. Wait,,, maybe I should think that out,,,, or call a priest? Nah, I'll call him later,,, when St Chris flies. Mike G in SC
  7. These are nice clamps off Ebay. I have them on my bikes. $39 + $7 ship. Royal Star Tour Deluxe Harley Dav Muffler VTwin Clamps | eBay

  9. Thanks Bert, I like the width, but I just put a ruler to my shield. Not sure if I want that short(?). Will see what I find in the next month or so. Again, thanks for checking, Mike G Oh, and the rest of the question,, Wife and I normally wear a half helmet (Scorpion). We do have full for dead of winter and expected heavy rain but have only used them a couple times this season.
  10. Here's a little better price, $167, on the Yamaha deflectors. There are a few dealers that have good Internet pricing. Usually my local dealer will match them if I bring in the printed page. Stadium Yamaha and Central Yamaha in Dallas area, Cucamonga Yamaha, in Coo-caaaa-mon-ga CA as Johnny Carson would say. Tinted Lower Wind Vents : Stadium Yamaha I have them on my RSTD and my RSV. They mostly help in cold weather to keep feet warm. In summer, if you put them full in, it can push more hot air on you lower legs & feet. So, I normally put them just in slightly to bring fresh air on the legs but not on the engine in summer.
  11. Looks like the OEM middle size is now 12.5". Stadium Yamaha in TX has a good price of $155 ( Windshields : Stadium Yamaha ) Bert, any chance that is what you have? If so, could you measure the width tip to tip on the back side, bottom. (stock is 23", my F4 is 28" wide). Thanks, Mike G
  12. Bert206, I know there are some cheapo short shields on Amazon (I posted a thread) but they don't indicate WIDER. I have a full size F4 Custom, it is WIDER. But they don't make a 14" wide. What screen did you buy, brand/model - link to seller? I would like to see about a 14" for summer, but me too, want wider. Thanks, Mike G in SC
  13. When I was replacing my right horn with a Stebel, I first disconnected the stock right. I did honk the remaining left horn (inside the cowling). It went mufffff. Been years but seems it was same horn as the one on the right. If so, yeah, mounted inside, it does not have the outlet that a car horn does, and lost a bunch of sound getting out.
  14. This one was not mine but this is what it looked like. In 1973 my oldest brother had a Kawasaki 175 he sold me. Shipped it from CA to SC in a crate. Good dirt bike but I also used it to commute to work.
  15. Yeah, I will say that Yamaha is trying to move the 2012-2013's left at dealers with deep discounts (rebates to dealer). They have actually put the 2013 RSV back on the Yamaha model page last week: 2013 Star Motorcycles Royal Star Venture S Home, information I rode up to Lumberton NC with a friend from Columbia 3 weeks ago and he got the 2013 for $15099+ tax/tags. It is up to the dealer to apply them (the one in Florence SC was holding out for 15999 on same bike). He commutes (about 25k miles/yr and wanted the 5 year unlimited miles warranty,,, after HD $$ problems.) GREAT deal if you are good with the 2013 model (I would for $10k less than the likely 2016).
  16. Bob, I thought someone in NY won part of the Powerball $400+M last week,,,, wasn't it your cousin??? You should check.
  17. I haven't heard it, he says more of a cricket noise, drives him crazy. No, this is a dealer/bike issue as this is 4th time, and dealer acknowledges it. (I do see google chatter about it.)
  18. I sat on one at the dealer in Myrtle Beach. I did not ride it, was not demo day. But what I did like is, at 5'8", my feet were on the ground, and very comfortable. My neighbor got a Chieftain, loves it. (But he has taken it back for 4th time for belt squeal, not happy about that.)
  19. Impressed with your article! Thanks. I had typically been using the Hi-Flo 303 as that is what bike shops sell. Sometimes K&N. Then, reading on forums, I went to the Purolator Pure One for several years. Could get the right one (above) at Advance Auto Parts. But then two years ago, one of the articles of filters, and then some members started saying that the Purolator (specifically Pure One) requires too high of oil pressure to function on our bikes. Said it is made for cars, and motorcycles do not push that much pressure. ???? I do not know if they meant in normal operation or as it clogs. (That said, I used them for several years on my Royals with no known problems.) So, with that I started back buying the K&N as I know it is specifically made for motorcycles. More auto part places carry it now. I do not know if the pressure is really a problem with using "car" filters on a motorcycle or if they are just fine. Again, thanks for your article. Mike G.
  20. Shop replaced the one on my RSTD and RSV, under warranty. They spotted the leak(s) when changing rear tires and placed the order before I knew about it. Extreme Sports Yamaha, Sumter, SC, Thank you!
  21. Thanks Eddie. I jumped to NW/Victoria (so, now Titan) about 5 years ago from GEICO. But same thing, they started good, then continued increases each year. I will stick with a good thing, as long as I am treated good. But, $330 vs $500/yr,, (good record, good credit, same coverage's) is time to move. But, as noted, I did give my agent the opportunity to keep me, and he did. He does similar with my house/cars. Mike G
  22. I cover TWO bikes. 2006 RSTD and 2009 RSV. ($330/yr) Mine went up last April when Nationwide/Victoria sold my policy to Titian, who jacked it to almost $500/yr, but with good $$ coverage (but $500 deductible). I went online and checked Dairyland, qouted $380 for same. Called my local agent and told him about his new company and Dairyland. Turns out he can sell Dairyland, and cut it to $330 for great coverage on BOTH bikes! I got a good independent agent. But my neighbor, with a new Indian Chieftain did Dairyland online, then had rate troubles after signing. He tried to go with my agent but could not as he had already signed direct. So, chase Internet quotes, but check with your local independent before you sign up.
  23. Dion, Cause it's like having Pavarotti, backed up by Alvin the Chipmunk. Can't hear it and don't want to. (Sorry Alvin,,,, ALVIN!) Try this test. Unplug your right side horn (one lead) then honk. Goes Poooooo,,,,t Being inside the cowling makes it pretty insignificant. Someone more electrical might tell you if it is stealing juice from the Bad Boy (or Stebel in my case). Some folks have mounted a second air horn over there.
  24. When I first got my RSTD, did not know about Larry's bracket and harness. Heck, didn't know about VR! So, did it my self. I used a 2" single hole corner brace from Lowes (enlarged the holes). see below. And wired manually with a relay. The original brace did crack. But, hey, it was a 4 pack & quickly fashioned another. But when I got my RSV, got harness and the stainless bracket from Larry. Looks better, won't crack and harness made it quick and easy. And, I did unplug the left horn (maybe removed it, not sure?). You can't hear it over the air horn, only serves to drain juice. Stupid place for one anyhow. Lowes brace:
