    Yeep at 52 I am having some of those issues myself I am leaning toward SL 550. I had one on loan for 2 days & I am hooked!

    What battery is everyone using? My original only lasted 1 1/2 years. I replaced it (in an emergency from the local parts store) with an Interstate, and this one only lasted 1 1/2 years. I know batteries do not last forever, but I normally get at least 5-6 years on my other bikes. What is everyone using? Original? Yuasa? Gel? Now with snow still outside I have planty of time to make a better choice.

    Check all of the mounting hardware for the rear trunk. See if any are loose or missing!!!!!!!!

    20k for the same old Venture is a lot. But sitting on a GW my knees would not last bent like that for too long. I guess when the time comes I would need to look elsewhere!

    OK, OK, OK for those of you that need an explanation, that was for the previous target (road side pull off). Here is the current target! I have read the preliminary police report and I can tell you the cyclists were in NO WAY in the wrong. They did EXACTLY what the law required them to do. I have also been at the accident site and if you see it you will realize what really happened. With that said I just want to spread the word to anyone interested that there will be a rally in support of motorcyclists on Friday August, 13th starting at 7pm Downtown at Monument circle in Indianapolis. There will be a petition going around to help force the police to take the correct steps to make sure this case is handled properly and that it isn’t just get swept under the rug. If you would like to show your support please be sure to come by. We truly appreciate everyone’s kind words, thoughts, and prayers

    After all I read about our whining problem, nothing seams to have made much sense:think: until now. I read this TECH Q&A in Rider magazine and thought some one else may be interested. Q: / recently purchased a used, one-owner 2007 Yamaha Royal Star Venture with the 1,300cc V-4 engine, still under factory warranty with 7,000 miles on it, I discovered (only after I brought it home and began to ride it) that as the engine speed increases there is an annoying "whine" to the motor. I have talked to two other Venture owners about this, and whine is so loud you can't hear the radio! Is this something I should take back to the dealer to have looked at, or is this truly a whine I have to live with? By the way, the noise is in the engine— not the drivetrain—because it is notice­able in neutral as the motor is revved. Dave Sugarbaker, Via E-mail A: The kind of noise you're describing usually comes from straight-cut gears, and the Venture has two sets: the gear pair that drives the clutch and the pair that drives the balancer shaft. The pri­mary gears—the ones that drive the clutch—seem to be the problem here. Most manufacturers address the noise issue by using helical-cut gears (teeth that are at an angle rather than parallel to the shaft) or split gears (gear pairs that are slightly offset and spring loaded). Now, by using straight-cut gears, Yamaha has made accuracy in the machining of the gears highly critical. A driven gear (the one on the clutch hub) that's just a couple of thousandths of an inch too big will make a lot more noise. As with all mass-produced machinery there's a plus and minus tolerance, and ideally the gears will be matched so the tooth engagement is just right. The engineers have probably made sure that even if you got two "big" gears there would be enough tol­erance in the shaft bearings that it wouldn't cause a bearing failure.I suggest you take your bike in to your favorite Yamaha dealer and get it looked at while it's still under warranty. Even if the mechanic can't find the problem (using Plastigauge to measure the clearance and then actually finding a specification to compare it to), you'll have docu­mentation and if something breaks later you'll have something to fall back on.

    Specs. on 3 bikes: Year and model-------2008 HD RK---------2009 HD RK------------Yamaha RSV Overall length--------------93.7"-----------------97"---------------104.5" Wheel base----------------63.5"-----------------64"----------------67.1" These measurement clearly show a big difference in size of the bikes, most of which is in the rider/passenger accommodations. I still recommend sitting on a full dresser in the show room with your better half before putting any money down you'll find that is laking in the room department especially with a rider back rest installed. On my venture I need to lean back some to know if my wife is still there. Why can Harley manufacture a chassis that would allow more space and give the costumer a choice.

    OK I finally found it! I do not know how old some of you are but I have been riding and reading about motorcycles a long time. The V-rod is not the first Harley/Porsche collaboration on a water cooled bike! There was a bike called the NOVA V-4 back in the late '70s that was manufactured by Harley with a Porsche motor that never came to be, why I do not know or remember but here is the link to the story I found on line enjoy: http://www.bikerenews.com/AntiqueBikes/CodeNameNova.htm There are some similarities to the V-rod, the V-rod is not all new innovation!

    First of all I like all bikes if it has 2 wheels and an engine I'll ride it. OK you Harley experts correct me if I am wrong. I rode my friends Harley (that the one that looks like a Road King without the trunk) yes it easier to balance and manage but if felt a lot smaller than my Venture, more like my old Kawasaki Vulcan 800 (which had in 1997 a wheel base 1/2" longer than a RK) and the heat coming from between my legs at the light was just too much. I am no longer 20 years old and nor is my wife, we are not extremely big people but rather average, looking at the Harley we would not fit comfortably on it definitely not like we do on the Venture. Then a Harley owner explained to me that HD make a kit you can buy to move the trunk further back to make more room for the passenger. Now I know why some trunks on Harley vibrate more than others. The further out you move the weight the more it moves and leads to cracks. Now is this true or not? I my opinion it feels smaller and it is smaller. So if you are thinking of going from a RSV or a GW to HD better try it out for size first.

    Let me see if I have this correct. We went from a automobile running a red light and hitting a motorcycle and causing the death of the rider to: -It was the rider fault for not wearing a helmet. -It was the rider fault for not being prepared. -It was the rider fault for choosing to ride a motorcycle. -Accidents happen no matter what. -We also go down from collision with animals. -Motorcyclists hit motorcyclists too. -Cars hit cars and we do not care what happens. -Etc., etc,. The above reasons do not apply!!! I do not know the specifics but I would speculate that she was distracted & did not realized she went through the red light until it was too late. The fact is that we are riders & and we care because we know the danger we face when we ride. Carelessness from driver lead to much greater injury to riders than other drivers. That is not to say that drivers do not get injured, but that does not justify hitting a rider.
