  1. duh.......... like I said... simple... So far so good.. MC off and now onto the repair kit
  2. okay.. here comes my first question that probably has a real simple answer to it... How do you disconnect the electrical connection/switch near the handle from the mc? I'd hate to break something so soon.. I'll try to attach picture even tho I have never done that. Clay clutch mc 001.jpg
  3. Got my parts in toady from Rick at Buckeye and will attempt tomorrow to repair clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder on my 83 VR. I do have the mannual that shows the diagram for the mc, but the directions for the slave are pretty vague. Anyone ever do these jobs or have any expert advice before I tear into them. Need to get old 83 up and running? Thanks, Clay
  4. Thanks for the input. Yea, from what I hear from most people, it is just better to put the whole new slave in rather than try to rebuild... I'm sure I'll be back with questions later. Thanks, Clay
  5. HI, NEED TO ORDER A CLUTCH mc REBUILD KIT AND SLAVE CYLINDER REBUILD TO FIX UP 83VR CLUTCH THAT DIED ON MY WAY BACK FROM MY 5000 MILE TRIP OUT WEST. ANY IDEAS / ADVICE ON A PLACE TO ORDER THESE ITEMS FROM? CLAY
  6. As soon as I run back to iowa to get the bike I will check the master cyclinder on the handlebars and I imagine I'll pull the clutch cover. i'll start looking thru my mannual and get back with any ( I'm sure lots) of questions...... Thanks for all the advice so far. Clay
  7. Help. Never have had a problem like this on old 83. Just took it 5000 miles west to Glacier, Waterton, Yellowstone, the tetons and the bighorns...300 miles from home the clutch seemed to lose pressure.. the only way to get it to shift was to pump the clutch up.. no fluid was seemingly lost.....Stopped and bled the clutch , but to no avail... the pressure stayed up , but it got to the point where it would no longer shift. Fortunately it stopped working just a few miles from my moms' house on my last day.... However... it will no longer shift into any gear while running.. I can get it into nuetral while it is not running, but the second I try to put it in any gear, it slams to a stop and kills the motor or makes an ungodly sound like someone throwing a bad of wrenches.. Hopefully the tranny did not go.. I love my original 83 (40,000 miles )and would hate to see it die. Never dealt with any clutch issues before so have no idea.. Any thoughts, clues or things to look at????? Hard to repair???? I have to take my trailer and ride back 300 miles to pick up the bike next week...Want to do more serious riding this summer so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated... Met another Venture rider ( Dave 007) at a gas station in Chamberlain,SD on my way back. 5000 miles 0f a great trip. the Road to the Sun and The Beartooth were great rides....Hopefully old 83 is up for more...
  8. Thanks for the update. I'm leaving tomorrow at 7:00 for that same trip. I am really bummed that Road to the Sun is not open. I had planned on hitting it July 3rd and the Beartooth around the 11th... Sounds like a great trip. Thanks again. Unique timing on this post. Clay
  9. Thanks for all the good wishes and suggestions. I absolutely am planning on the Beartooth. From everything I have heard it is dramatic. The Chief Joseph is also on my list... So much to see and do... Being a teacher, I have the summer off..... but usually work at something else anyway. ......This summer I said the heck with it. Time for a GREAT trip. The irony of it is that I Hate heights,.... :confused24:but am going to certainly experience some real "straight downs" and edges... I refuse to let fear of that spoil such great Vistas.... I did Pikes Peak a few years back and that was a bit spooky......I am however planning on the east to west route of Road to the Sun ( staying on the mountain side..... although that is not even completely open yet according to the USNPS website... The big drift is still not plowed out and the 29 mile middle section at Logan pass is not open. The bike is just about packed.. backpacking tent, bag, pad, clothes and the necessary items... ( BEAR SPRAY)... 2 more days... The anticipation is intense.. Can't wait... I'll keep an eye out for all those killer deer on hwy 2..... If I ever figure out how to post photos on here, I'll post some upon return. Clay
  10. Hi, Well I'm leaving Sunday AM for my solo trip across MN, ND and Montana on Hwy 2 to Glacier NP, then down to Yellowstone, The Grand Tetons, back thru Devils Tower, the Black Hills and thru SD back to home in Wisconsin 3 weeks later. Camping most of the way except for a 4 day stop at my best friend's place in Great Falls, MT. I am way pumped for this trip.. old 83 is primed and ready to roll....:fingers-crossed-emo From what I see on the Glacier website, the Road to the sun is STILL not open all the way through... Anyone who lives in those areas got any great side trips.... I've got the time... Clay
  11. Hi, Used to live in SD right next to 44 in White River. Used to take it back home thru to Iowa. It is good thru Parker, Parkston and Platte to Winner and even beyond thru Mission SD. Don't look for much in the way of services along this road. If you like the open plains, it will be scenic in its own way. From White River on thru Wanblee it is pretty desolate, but again very scenic in a stark way. From Mission to Wanblee you are running thru the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian Reservations...If you head from there thru the Badlands, you gotta stop at Wooden Knife Indian Taco Stand in the Interior/ Scenic area. Best Indian Tacos anywhere.. 44 runs right into the south side of Rapid City. It will take longer, but you can cruise along pretty good. I've spent a lot of time in the Black Hills. If you go take the Custer Wildlife Loop ( a great time ) be sure to plan to go early to late evening. Otherwise all you will see are the tons of Pronghorns. Late in the day, the chances of Buffalo, wild burros and elk are much greater... Don't miss Sylvan Lake.. The Gem of the Black Hills Watch the late evening drives. Deer everywhere along the roads Have a great trip.. You'll love it..A week is barely enough to cover the Hills. Clay
  12. Hey, Thinking of putting some vents in my windshield. tired of not getting enough air flow to stay cool on warm days. Anybody ever buy and install aftermarket vents? CLAY
  13. I have not yet found my short, but will be working on it this week. Simply driving w/o blinkers, hornTach, Nuetral and other computer signals..Mostly slab time anyway.. but.. my short ( fuse blowing) has gotten worse... I have it narrowed down to it occurs everytime I turn my handlebars to the left. I'm thinking horn wiring. but am going to tear all the plastic off this week and replace plug wires and re-grease all possible connections within reach at the same time... I hate electrical issues. They are maddening to say the least:mad: Clay
  14. I start started having the exact same problem with that same fuse, but mine will go fine for a day or so then when I go out in the AM, the gauges and blinkers are dead, replace the fuse and fine for a day or so. never blows while running. I just go out and find that fuse blown. I was going to start looking. It's easy to replace the fuse in 2 or 3 minutes but a hassle. Any ideas would be great. Clay
  15. Hi, Going to order then change the plug wires on my 83 VR... I could order them from the local dealer, but thought I'd first check if anybody here had any recommendations on brand, or good place online to order them from... Any quick tidbits of advice for making the job quick and easy? Thanks, Clay
  16. Glad to pay a reasonable fee.. The tech talk and advice alone are worth $$$$.. Do what you need to do. Aprreciate all that you do. Clay
  17. Hi, I seem to have a problem with something getting wet and causing poor running. This has gone on for 2 years 83 VR runs perfect when dry or even damp, but after 25 or 30 miles in a medium to heavy rain, the bike starts to run poorly.....Seems to want to miss and cut out I've wondered about the TCI connections or the plug wires... any other thoughts... Thanks in advance for any info, Clay
  18. Quick question. Anyone ever run 404's on their Venture on VR...??? I've read so much about Avon Venoms , and am really thinking about order some new rubber for my 83 VR this week, but also have read enough about some bikes having that squirrley feeling above 80. Have not been able to find a matched set of Elite III's Had just thought about the old 404's for a bit. Thought I'd ask the experts. Most riding is solo touring, but do ride some two up around town. Thanks, Clay
  19. I've had it with my radio on my 83 VR.. I screwed with it non stop, cleaned it and and even replaced it with one I picked up that i know works. The brass pin connections are just too tricky. I saw somewhere on here at one time where someone had retrofitted a marine radio into the same location as the original.... but I can't find the post again.. I know lots of people just use MP3's and i pods. those are great, but I still like the plain old radio for around town. Any thoughts ideas or knowledge on how to put a marine radio in that location. thanks Clay
  20. Hi Quick question for all...I got my 83 VR last year and just love it.. Best Riding bike I've ever had in 30 years of riding. No 2nd gear problems yet with 28,000 However I for the life of me cannot get it up on it's center stand.. I'm 6:4 230 and fairly strong. I've also had a buddy of mine who has ridden for years and is an instructor for the MSF try as well... the 2 of us could hardly get it up. He said he has never had difficulty like that either. Is there some trick I'm missing on this particular bike or is that a problem others have had as well? Just curious? Thanks, Clay
  21. Thanks to all who contributed opinions. Looks like I'll be ordering a new set of Avons from SW Moto. I was kind of leaning that direction anyway, but now am interested to see if handling improves as much as some riders state.
  22. Hi, Time to replace the Dunlop Elite II tires on my 1st Gen 83 VR. before my long summer tour out west....I've looked at some of the previous posts and am wondering between the seeminly ever popular Venoms loved by lots on here, the Elite III's , The Conti-tour and The Michelin Commander.. SW motor Tires and American Motorcycle Tires seem to have the best prices.. Any words of wisdom or warning concerning the above? Thanks, Clay
  23. Way to rub it in...cold with a foot of snow on the ground ... All that's left is the Packers and the Badgers.... I'll be riding in April.. maybe... However certainly interesting checking out all the great info on the site.. Thanks to all who contribute... Planning my summer ride to Glacier and Yellowstone.. 5 months seems forever.
  24. Hi, Headlight on 83 VR used to work ....both high and low beam, stopped working on high this fall , therefore high beam warning lite stays on.... I'm assuming switch on left handlebar might be bad... Not the greatest light beam now..., but I am going to look at painting inside of headlight cover as suggested and I'm replacing driving lights soon too... Still a well functioning high beam would be nice... Anyone had to replace switch???? Running wires as well as choke cable look interesting ..... Clay
  25. Hi, Question?? My radio/ cassette on my 83 VR cuts in and out... Will sound fine out of both speakers while idling.. Put it in gear and sometimes it cuts out.. sometimes goes to one speaker or the other, sometimes sounds great. Same with Cass. Perfect at times.. almost nil at others.. a good bang on the volume switch will occasionally fix it otherwise not.. I have heard that the pins sometimes are bent or do not connect well... Looking at another radio or 2 on e-bay... not the best luck? Any similar experiences or successes. I have thought about retro fitting a marine radio. but would really prefer to keep factory.. Clay
