  1. Just did my rear tire and also drive shaft today. It took about 2 minutes or less to get the shaft back in.... Just kind of lifted the u joint up with the end and it slipped right in.. Having the bike in gear helped so the u joint would not move. Maybe lucky , but I'll take it after hearing a few tough stories about putting Drive shaft back in, Also put in a new fuel filter at the same time.. That's real fun to get at... New rubber, new fluids, new filters... 4 weeks to our group Ozark Trip..Ready to roll Clay
  2. I'm going to change the reat tire, and pull the punpkin off my 84 this weekend.. Pull out the drive shaft and lube it... Easy out, but I've had a few people tell me getting the shaft back in is not quite as easy since the u-joint near the front drops down.. Any tricks or tips ?? And what about moly grease? Thanks, Clay

  4. Hoping for the best. Always sick to hear of a rider down. My thoughts will be with those close . Clay
  5. Hi, Thanks for all the interest in the 83 parts I have listed in the classifieds.Floorboards, clutch master cylinder, throttle cable, rotor covers, slave cylinder, seat, windshield and left saddlebag are gone. Still willing to offer good deals on driver's backrest, nice chrome bumper, TCI, Full Wiring harness and many other parts. Radio/CD were shot.. Help me clean out my basement/ garage. I'm tired of parts everywhere Clay
  6. Hey, thanks for all the interest and PMs on the parts... Floorboards are gone as well as slave and rear brake master cyclinder Still have a very nice driver's backrest, and all black top plastic , front fender, the nice rear chrome bumper along with numerous other parts. Squidly... I'll kind of combine all the little bolts, screws and attachments together and drop you a PM sometime soon. Thanks, Clay
  7. I'm putting this in the classifieds as well.. Parting out my old 83 VR.. Plastic is mostly shot Lots of other great parts.. Not interested in Ebaying stuff. I'm more interested in getting rid of most of the stuff rather than getting rich.. Backrest, Floorboards w/ heel toe shifter,TCI, very nice rear chrome and most all other misc parts. PM me , ask for what you need and we'll make a good deal... Clay
  8. Got my seat back from Rick a couple of weeks ago. Today was 60 degrees and sunny. A buddy and I went nearly 200 miles today and the re-done seat was sweeeeeeettt... A great choice to have Rick do the job.
  9. Hi, Bought another 84 first Gen last summer. The factory radio was out and a nicely installed radio /CD player had been installed in it's place. The PO told me that he could not get the radio to work and thought maybe it was bad... I really did not care all that much last year, but over the winter I decided to check it out. Could not get it to power up... Took it to the radio repair shop , the guy tested it and it worked fine.. Home.... of course not... Situation.. there are 3 wires coming from the noise filter box. Red, yellow and Black. The Radio guy told me yellow -- power all the time for memory red- from the ignition Black ground.. Sounds simple right... however cannot get anything to work I'm an electronics idiot and thought someone on here might have more knowledge.. Thanks, Clay
  10. The Tach on my 84 has recently begun to move slugglishly for about 1 or 2 minutes especially when it is very cold as well.. I have not worried about it yet as it works fine after a few minutes. I may try cleaning it up with some product next spring. I also read an article on here some time back about the same problem. Clay
  11. Gotta love the clean look of the back of the bike without all that chrome on it.... Nice looking ride....
  12. This is an issue I'm a bit afraid to even deal with now.. I have to remove the bolt on mine soon, and was wondering if there is a good way to get the bolt out without snapping the neck off. I was thinking about trying to hold the neck with a wrench while turning the bolt... With all the stories of broken res., I'm a bit tentative until at least after the riding season..
  13. I've been thinking about progressives.. Question... Does sitting that much higher cause problems with leaning too far over and putting even more pressure on an already iffy and breakable kickstand????
  14. Congrats on the "new" 1st Gen.. gotta keep them all on the road.
  15. Great article and a great reminder for all of us whether in the cage or on the bike. I passed it on to a buddy of mine who is a MSF instructor and he too felt it was so appropriate. Fortunately for me I have a GF who constantly reminds me that there is no need to be in a hurry:no-no-no:... A great phrase to remember whenever hoping on the bike... Thanks for the post,
  16. I had the same problem on my 83.. Tried keeping the air levels high.. not much helped and I'm 6"4 230......The only thing I found that made it easy was to simply leave a 1 x 10 section of board in the garage and drive up on that with the rear wheel leaving enough space to get the center stand down. with the rear wheel up a bit , it was much easier.. Also be sure to let the bike rest on the center stand. Sometimes until you are used to it, it feels like you're almost over too far, but be sure both legs are down well..then.. follow the other advice given here.. the board will really help.. My 84 pops right up like nothing, but the 83 was nearly impossible.. why I don't know. Good luck, Clay
  17. This is the best link that I have been referred to online. The blown up parts diagram on fiche are very handy. http://www.flatoutmotorcycles.com/fiche_select.asp?vcc=Motorcycles&mfg=Yamaha&year=0#FicheSelection Clay
  18. Well well well... parting out my old 83 is looking better considering I now have 2 backrests in perfect condition:big-grin-emoticon: Clay
  19. good grief.....Old Mickey Mouse of the Nutcrushers MC:dancefool:
  20. Glad to hear you are okay. With all the deer around MN and WI, it's lucky any of us are still upright. Take and hope you are back on the road soon. Clay
  21. Here in western Wisconsin I've only seen a few Ventures.. We do have a few 1st Gens in the area. Some that I've met, while some I look forward to meeting..It's absolutely the greatest to have a classic ride like the 1st gen:banana: compared to all the home grown Harleys in the brew state.. Clay
  22. It's somehow some way the neutral switch... It will turn over when clutch is held in......However I obviously have not gotten to the root of the entire clutch issue and the tranny still seems to want to engage ... Still hoping for a cure sometime soon... looks like i'll be tearing the bike down again...
  23. Hey Well wait a sec.... All put back together and now there seems to be no power to the starter.. :think:all I get is a dimming of the lights and nothing else.. Kickstand relay seems okay.. I must have messed up a wire or connection somewhere when I had the stator cover or some other part off... SHEEEEEET First place to look???

  25. Hello After much profanity and ghost chasing, my hydraulic air lock issue seems to be resolved. After previously blowing out the lines once, I decided to disconnect the joint between the main clutch line and the black hose nearest the slave and blow that section separately .. walllllllaaaaaa.. gunk crap came out which I believe was acting as a blockage at that junction..Blew the Sh-- out of it.. reconnected all and bled well... Perfect clutch action......... Now all that remains is to clean up one heck of a mess in the garage, fill with oil and fire up... hopefully I will be back rolling very soon.. Thank you VERY much to everyone who contributed ideas and suggestions.. Special thanks to Danob11 in Indiana and Condor for their well used suggestions.. This has been a fantastic learning experience in so many parts of this bike that I had not experienced. Hopefully I'll be able to use this experience to help anyone else that has difficulties in these areas... Clay
