  1. I had this same thing and was worried that I might have to pull the fuel sending unigt and mess with the fumes etc....A couple guys on here said to check the connections under the seat first..Pulled the seat, cleaned the connections with a bit steel wool and sprayed the rest down with electrical cleaner and WALLA.. works perfect...A first place to start.. Good luck Clay
  2. Thanks Don All the work you do for this site is more appreciated than you know:lightbulb:
  3. Want to thank everyone for the advice... took the seat off and simply cleaned the connections real well and sprayed them down with electric cleaner. Immediately worked perfect....Glad it was the first simple solution.... Thanks Clay
  4. I'll check out these options tomorrow night..Thanks for the advice.. hope it's just a connection issue, but at any rate, does not seem too complicated.
  5. I still have my tank from my old 83 ...I'll first check the connections, greae them up with dialectic grease....Other wise I'll pull the fuel sender and check that...I was wondering about the solder connections as a potential issue.
  6. Hi, Finally got the 84 VR all put back together after a long winter tear down..Replaced collector, new swing arm bushings, starter rebuild and misc other stuff...Started her up today for the first time... runs great.....BUT Gas gauge shows empty and of course the darn little red light is flashing , but the tank was half full... rode to the gas station, filled it up and still shows empty. This happened once last year for about 10 minutes then good all summer.. What to check first??? fuel sender, float...gauge itself??? Any advice on where to begin would be appreciated...Can certainly ride it, but do not like the little red light and I'd rather know the gas level Thanks, Clay
  7. After calling Flatout and a few other places about the swing arm and getting the same response..." can't get them".. I went back to Rick at Buckeye and as usual....he had the hard to find part in stock....Yamaha sure seems to be proud of their bushings at $25..a pop, but once again Buckeye is a great source for these fantastic 1st Gen ventures..
  8. Tore the swing arm apart on my 84 VR tonight and found out I need the middle bushings...the ones near the shock attachment... do they still make those anymore? checkede a couple places online and they said backordered.. Hoping to find some fast. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Clay
  9. My 83 blond was a real bear to pop up, so I always had a 2x10 in the garage and just drove up on it and that helped a lot... my 84 on the other hand jumps right up with a little rock and push down on the center stand
  10. as soon as you figure out how to mount them, be sure to post so people like me who are not quite a s innovative can see themm.. love to find a way to mount them.... or find some that are made for the bike.. Clay
  11. I'll take a set too....let me know when and where to send or use pay pal Clay
  12. Yes. the removable bags are great, but if one is going to put clothing in, it tends to fall out a bit...You know how some people ( read better half) tend to want to pack too many clothes.......
  13. Hi, I have been looking in vain for a set of saddlebag liners for my 84 VR.. Can't find anything that would fit and my sewing ability is NOT going to allow me to make any..I have found a few old posts and pm'd Beer 30 , but have not heard anything.... Any ideas or thoughts....Love to have a set for our summer trip to CO Clay
  14. Thanks.. I like check out the missing images...The connections.....I've got the bike torn down a bit right now in the garage.. replacing the collector, putting in new swing arm bushings, going to rebuild the starter too.....maybe even put in a barrnet clutch...I'll check all the connection.. especially the solenoid 80,000 miles on the old girl and she still runs like a charm.. 15,000 miles each of the last 2 years..
  15. I have 50 watt driving lights, but rarely use them. They are just on the bike for my rare night riding...I just want to make sure that I'm not found with a dead batt at 14,000 feet.. of course there's always a running downhill start.... Thanks for the info.. I was not sure of the output on these older VRs..I'll check on the draw of the vest before I order one.. Clay
  16. Am planning an early June trip to Colorado this coming summer...Going to be a bit chilly riding a few of those passes I imagine.. was thinking of a heated vest for my better half, but wondered if the electrical output of my 84 first gen is enough... I was thinking no, but thought I check with the folks here.. Anyone early first gen riders familiar with this...??? Thanks, Clay
  17. Was looking here for news of continued recovery.. what sad news....Thought are with his family and friends
  18. my 84 occasionally does the same thing.. Never loses any rad fluid and only when hot city driving, but temp is never much over 1/2. If you figure out the reason, be sure to let us know...Maybe I need to look into a new cap as well.
  19. I was including the front header gaskets in that number.. Probably will not need to replace those, but looking for another place to get the collector in and outs at a little bit better price... This looks to be an time consuming job that will require a few beverages to accomplish. Any tricks, tips or advice welcome.
  20. Hey I'm going to teat out my old collector from my 84 which cracked at the out pipe and replace it with the good one from my old 83...( glad I kept it). Do i need to replace all the gaskets... Those darn things are expensive.. Rick at buckeye quoted 148.00 for eight of them. Can the old ones be reused? Clay
  21. I have a buddy who has had several of them, and the RT's are very nice bike. However they are not a full touring bike like the LT.. The RT gets fantastic mileage.. 52+...Comfortable with an upright seating position. The engines are easy to adjust the valves on which is a positive as well... The only real downside to Beemers is the repair portion.. dealers are much harder to find on trips. with honda, yamaha dealers on lots of corners, BMW dealers are more sparsley located. I'd still rather ride my 1st gen
  22. My rear Dunlop E-3 on my 84 has developed some pretty serious scalloping.. I generally run about 42 psi in that tire. I don't run real agressive in corners and do run a fair amount of slab.. Any ideas why this happens... I had hoped to get considerably more mileage than that. I got nearly 20 K on my previous E-2s.
  23. Hi, I recently developed an afterfire on my 84. Upon further inspection, I have one fair sized crak near the very rear of my collector.. I imagine there may be more.. Time to fix I suppose...How much effort and job to remove this and weld....I think the baffles are okay. Any tip or trick to speed removal or make it easier? Thanks Clay
  24. Just got back from there today. We road from West Central WI down to St Louis to the Arch then down to Mt Home...Took quite a while around SL.... Slabbed it back up 63 in much shorter time..2 down, 4 there and 2 down is just about right. Some of the best roads around..Hooked up with Curtis ( CTraylor) in Mountain Home....What a great guy. You must ride ":push mountain road" 341 out of mountain home....check out the photo guy 8.8 miles from the south end of the run.. Great guy who takes great picture (pushmountainpics.com) The area around Jasper is beautiful...Be careful on the twisties.. All those heading to the Rally are in for a real treat....( with some heat)
  25. That's exactly where the fuel filter is... A real pain to get at . Best time to change that is when you have the rear wheel off.. I change mine everytime I change my rear tire... Cheap price to pay for getting caught plugged on the side of the road. I've never changed mine without taking the rear off... Clay
