  1. uh yea... thought about the fluid..then dismissed that..I think enough liquid got in somewhere....Now neither blinker works... How available is a new flasher for the first gens? ...or the auto blinker shut off timer?
  2. Thanks Jeff, I did take the cover off and disconnect the plug...Do you mean the plug or is there a relay hidden back under the outer fairing.. It's pretty obvious that water got somewhere it should'nt be , but I want to find out where so I can prevent it again. Why would that cause all the lights to go crazy..I' did not think that the computer lights and the indicator lights would be on the same circuit..Forgive me for my total lack of electrical knowledge.. Thanks Clay
  3. Hi, 5 days before I head out to Banff and points west for 20 days, I get caught in a torrential downpour and storm..In the midst of my left blinker went out..Right one works fine on front and back... When I turn the left on one..everything including bright indicator, neutral indicator, headlight and right and left blinker all begin to lightly blink..neither rear do anything Checked bulbs first as a possible .. they are fine... opinions....???? Could it be the flasher? What could possibly have gotten wet and cuased this.. Help..Need this fixed before trip Clay
  4. I've ridden it several times from Duluth west to Glacier...In fact i'll be riding that route out to Glacier and then up to Banff and Jasper in Early June for a 2week trip.. The odds of getting a motel in a 400 miles range from either side of williston,ND is tough with the oil boom and the railroad work along 2. I have camped a few times in Rugby North Daokta and I know from just the other day, that there are still a few motel rooms left in rugby..In minot or williston, they will either be full up or sky high rates... It's a long ride across the large states..Depends on whether you like open spaces...I love it..The truck traffic on 2 through the oil region is now nuts... I'm riding from Grand Rapids,MN to Rugby, ND.. about 400 the first day, then from Rugby to Havre,MT ( 500+) the next , then a short 4 hour jaunt to Glacier the next morning... Clay
  5. As usual, Whatever Mike tinkers with comes out awesome...They look fantastic.. and even better.. they work....
  6. Hi, A very good friend of mine just moved from Wisconsin to Maine, and I'm planning a solo ride this summer up thru the UP, across the Soo and taking what 17, 417 and what appears to be 40 across Ontario thru Montreal to Augusta, Maine. Looking like a mid-late July trip What kind of roads can I expect? typical summer weather patterns in that area? Pretty long distances with few gas stations on the western side? Need to watch out for Moose? :confused24:Advice or input welcome...Have NEVER ridden in Canada...Have passport etc... but certainly need advice from riders who have been there, done that. Thanks, Clay Menomonie ,WI
  7. Have not been on the site in a while, but stopped back in today to check and saw the post about Dan...When i first joined this group and had some tranny and clutch trouble Dan was a hero...He was so helpful and took the time to call and talk me thru issues i had with my bike..What a great guy..I nominated him for a VR award.. I'm not the religious type that many on here are, but certainly will be keeping Dan and his family in my thought often..Men like Dan are the good ones..
  8. My plan is to contact sky doc, get his delink kit. and hopefully use the standard front master on my 84... The portion on redoing the rear master will also be done.. New project for winter....along with the annual plastic tab repair..
  9. anyone have an idea where the little o rings in between the fluid ports between the calipers might be found?
  10. I think my plan is going to be to talk to sky doc as soon as i get a chance and order the de-linked stainless steel setup if it seems that the original front master will work ...or see if i need to get a larger one from another bike.... and then also probably rebuild the rear MC. I am wondering if when i rebuilt my calipers and had to split a couple of them,, if the little o rings between the fluid ports are the culprit...I know you are not supposed to split them, but ......live and learn maybe.. I'll look on the parts diagram to see if i can get those o rings
  11. I have thought about delinking the brakes with braided lines from sky doc, but wouldn't that require getting a different/large front reservoir? How much work is the process of changing from the linked on an 83 to a delinked...where would be the location of the splitter for the two front be located..It's hard enough to get to the valve up near the steering head to loosen the connection at the neck.. I want decent brakes again and simply am tired of the hassle....but if it's just the rear MC it might be just doing that fix....would a bad rear MC allow air in??
  12. Dan No I did not take the rear master out yet...was thinking about possibly having to rebuild that this winter, but would that cause this type of problem?
  13. Last winter, I was simply going to put new rotors on and replace my brake pads on my 83 VR. I got the wonderful idea to rebuild my calipers..( which really were not bad) as long as I was at it...Ever since then, my rear/left front brakes have been a nightmare... First bleeding them was a nightmare, but eventually got them satisfactory...but every now and then the rear pedal would get soft. I'd re bleed it and it would get somewhat better. The strange thing is as long as I was riding daily, it seemed okay...however, if I ever let the bike sit for much more than a week, I would have zero pressure and could not pump it up....fluid level is always fine in rear reservoir.. I'm obviously getting air somewhere, but how could that happen just sitting? Could it be a problem with seals on the calipers...I did have to split one of the calipers..( I know the mannual says never to do that,) but it seemed the only way to get one piston out. I really do not feel like spending all winter redoing brakes again.. it's darn messy job ...and i still prefer the integrated vs delinked brakes on this particular bike. Any great words of wisdom or ideas... Thanks Clay
  14. Went for a short ride tonight and went around the first corner and pressed on the brake pedal and uhh oh.....no brake at all.... Rode it three days ago and all was okay... No visible brake line leakage and no fluid anywhere....just no pressure at all... I"ll ride it tomorrow to work with just the front right and then check it out tomorrow. I"ll first check the rear fluid level and see if that is good..If that is good, will vacuum bleed.. Wondering if rear master cylinder would have suddenly gone.. This is an unexpected and never encountered problem.. Thoughts? ideas? comments? Thanks Clay
  15. If you are near Mountain Home or Mt View in North Central, there are endless great roads...Push Mountain Road is a great ride...There's a guy sitting there taking pictures on a nice curve.Sells them on Pushmountainspics.com ..I believe that is the website
  16. I may have to get some speed bleeders at some time soon, but for now I think I have addressed the air issue...I was after taking the right side black plastic cover and class controller out, quite easily get to the connection and rather easily looseN it. got a good amount of air out and intergrated brakes are about 90 %... I think letting it set a day may bring more to the neck... I also did find as Old Glazer stated... air getting in thru the bleeder threads....simply used the old school method of a half filled clear bottle with fluid and followed the sequence and the process seemed to work... although at the price, speed bleeders seem to be the ticket for all the hassle I went thru...The vaccum seemed to work well on the front, but not really necessary... Lots of great advice as always from great folks. Thanks
  17. i think i'm getting way too much air.. it really is a pretty steady stream of good sized air bubbles..
  18. ughhhh..I hate brakes. I rebuilt my calipers on my 84 and have been bleeding or attempting to bleed the brakes.. the front right is fine, but I simply cannot get the air out of the left front/ rear...no matter how much i bleed with a vac, i still get a steady stream of bubbles....much more than normal.. I have to be getting air in the system somewhere, but can't find where...checked banjo bolts and bleeders....calipers are working.....rear seems to have less air than the front left... any idea where i might have a leak.. i never messed with the junction near the steering neck. darn.. this is beyond frustrating.. I've been battling this for days... clay
  19. Hi, After caliper and brake rebuild, I am trying in vain to bleed the brakes on my 84. After 3 hours of using a vacuum pump yielding little success with quite a bit of air is out, the rear is still very spongy and cannot seem to get anymore air out..I have read a lot about the lack of a bleeder on the early models and am wondering if it is possible to get to the connection without taking plastic off???? I've bled the brakes before, but never a complete re-do from zero...Even having a terrible time with the front right brake... ughhhh.this is very frustrating..I want to ride. What is the correct order in bleeding considering the anti dives...??? Is it left anti-dive ,then left front caliper. then rear ....over and over again???? I;ve read a lot on this here, but still am struggling this time Thanks Clay
  20. Not religious like many on here, but went through a situation like this a number of years with my father...My thoughts and hopes are with you and yours...Hang in there and take care of yourself too.. Clay
  21. I've trailered my 84 a number of times several thousand miles..Nylon straps around the triple tree....I would not attach them to the saddlebag bars though..I run the tie down straps around the frame near the rear pegs.... Use a decent wheel chock in the front and pull everything forward.. Also use a ratchet strap around the front tire and the wheel chock... Don't compress the forks more than 1/3 of the way down.. Clay
  22. Beads all the way.. I have used both on my 83 and 84 VR...Beads keep your butt cool and are also great when your seat gets wet...Keeps you above the moisture...The beads also massage your hindquarters as you move around.. bead rider .com Clay
  23. I'll try to make it, depending on the date..heading to Colorado June 10th-20th
  24. I friend of a friend who just purchased an 83 VR and the CLASS air system works fine in the rear, but does not work at all in the front.. I told him to check the solders in the CLASS system, and he said it does not appear that there are any cracks in the solder..I thought he may have missed some, but might there be any other reasons Thanks, Clay
