  1. I've been hunting around, and I can't figure out exactly how to remove the class computer so I can do the E4 repair. On my 86 venture royale, the class is attached to a pivoting mount, so I can easily get to the plugs, but I can't get it out, I loosened the four screws at the back, but that doesn't seem to be all I need to do to get it out of the fariring. Need some experienced assistance please.
  2. I'm not sure if that would be one of the symptoms. With mine it's a matter of vibration that will cause an E1 error. Simply unplugging and plugging the unit works to fix it, it just may need to be done several times each day, usually I check it at gas stop.

I've done my reading on the CLASS repairs, and after hitting one helluva bump in a construction zone a couple weeks ago, it appears I'm going to have to use the techniques, but I have a couple questions. First, until the bump, it was working great, no E1 or E4 codes. After the bump, an E1 that can be corrected with the plug technique. However, after riding for a while, and the associated vibrations, sometimes it'll keep working, sometimes not. I read about heating up the contacts with a solder gun? Which contacts, how do you get them out of the plug, if necessary? Do I have to go in to resolder any cracks if the plug technique is working to make it work? Thanks guys, Joe
  4. I take a lot more issue with the states that use salt than I do the trucks. As a matter of fact that's the whole reason I brought this Escort back. My wife has to drive over to MN for her new job, and I flat told her that my truck would not be driven in the salt and that we needed to find a sacrificial lamb for that drive. I've lived in ND for 4 years now, and it's a rule in my house, my 92 doesn't get driven in MN from Oct-Mar. The only salt that truck has seen in 16 years is 1 detroit winter, where it got washed twice a week. It was lucky to come out with minimal underbody rust and no cancer. The body still looks just as good as the day I bought it in 2001.
  5. This is way off topic, but I'm just so damn thrilled with my pickup, I had to share. Today I dragged my wife's 94 Ford Escort from Minneapolis to my place just south of Canada with my 92 Toyota pickup. The weight of the car and dolly was just over 3000#. I held 65 mph in 5th gear (could've gone faster, but I didn't want to risk losing the whole ball of wax at 75), only having to downshift for the construction zones and was able to pull down 19mpg on the first tank, and 19+mpg with the air conditioning on (haven't figured it out yet) on the second tank. Not bad for a 16 year old pickup with 171,000 miles on it. Now, if Toyota just made a truck I wanted, I might consider buying a new one....on second thought, nah!
  6. I'm finally going to insulate my garage tomorrow. It's just a small 1 car unit, anyone have any good thoughts on a reasonably priced heating source?

  8. Okay, so I don't expect much, but I do expect that the city live up to their obligations, especially if they want me to. So, I go in to the city office in June and request that they trim their trees in front of my yard. I went in twice more throughout the summer, both times told I was on the list, and that it was in the works. So last week the trucks show up and they're trimming. Well, I wait a couple days, no truck in front of my house, I call today and am told they are done and I'll have to wait until next year, and that I have weeds in my yard and that they have to be taken care of or they'll fine me. So, here I am, being blown off, but in the same breath being told what I need to do. Consequently, I get pissed, raise my voice (not yelling, but not happy either) and go off on the first woman, and get transferred to another woman. (sorry gals, but I HATE dealing with women in these positions) She then proceeds to tell me that they ran out of money (after they put up an $850,000 community center this summer for a town of 600 people) and they had to prioritize, so they took the dead ones, and other people chipped in to get theirs taken down. I reiterated that they were not MY trees, they were on city property and the one tree in specific has a dead branch that has been threatening to come down on vehicles parked under/near the tree, and that if they were needing money chipped in, I was never informed and was not about to take care of my weeds until the city did their job. I then told them to just try to get a check for any fines out of me. So next, I was told that it wasn't courteous to raise my voice, to which I quickly responded that I'm not a nice guy, and to not expect it, especially if they were going to defend not doing their jobs. Oh, then on top of that, she tells me that a good citizen would go out and do it themselves to beautify the town. WHAT THE F*** am I paying taxes for!? Oh, I'm still steamed about it. Damn bastards, think they're so high and mighty because they sit in that office all day making decisions for other people, just ticks me off. Okay, I"m done.
  9. Man, do I hear you. I'm getting ready to head to MN to see the wife today, starting out in Topeka, KS. I came down on Mon/Tues and a patch let go about 70 miles south of the ND/SD line. Ended up barely getting off the interstate, standing out in the sun and wind for about an hour and a half before my ride finally showed up to get me over to Milbank to try to fix it. The patch was obviously poorly installed, so it took a bunch of calls and a lot of luck to track down a suitable replacement. Long story short, 11 hours to go 400 miles, and just about $300 for a new tire/labor. Just hope this one holds.
  10. I'd love to see my rpm's around the 3500 range, but mine still pulls down acceptable to very good mileage. I'm in mid trip again, spending a couple days in Topeka from ND, and the first day I was pulling down 38 mpg at 75 mph with a little headwind, and the second day I was getting 41-43 mpg running 65-70. I"m very happy, and love it when people tell me how expensive it must have been to drive down here. Heading back north tomorrow, but making a large detour through Minneapolis...need to go see the wife, it's been two weeks and I've got a hanckerin.
  11. Considering these engines are water cooled, it isn't a problem. Unlike air cooled motors in phoenix, where I hear it's not uncommon to replace cylinders every year or two. This is a bit unrelated, but my airplane engine is air cooled. I use fuel, air flow and oil to cool, and as such I use a cht and oil temp gauge for my engine monitoring. According to the oil manufacturers, and I use 20w50 and straight 50 weight, oil temps of 235 degrees aren't going to compromise the oil's ability to do it's job. Now, I'm not sure, but I'm assuming the thermostat and fan on our bikes are calibrated to keep the temp at or under 200 degrees, so there should really be no problem if everything is operating properly.
  12. Is anyone familiar with the Sioux Falls, SD area well enough to recommend a clean, reasonably priced hotel in the area? Gonna be going through there next weekend, and hope to find something that's not gonna break the bank, and not come away with any additional "visitors" in my bags. Thanks.
  13. Okay, finally, it's back together. Waiting for these parts can be excrutiating. Here's the synopsis. Speedo quit, cable, speedo itself okay. Tore apart the fron wheel, the hub unit itself spun freely (part number 26H-25190-00-00), but the clutch meter (341-25149-00-00) was torn up. So, we replaced that, its retainer and seal. Upon further investigation, the hub unit was crudded up with rust, so my mechanic took it upon himself to take it apart, clean it, polish it, regrease and put it all back together when the parts finally arrived. As of right now, it's working without any problems. Thanks to all for their input and assistance. Oh, I'd post pictures, but the wife's got the camera and she's away for the next 6 weeks. Joe
  14. I fought this very thing earlier this spring. Turned out to be an old, cracked vacuum line leading up to the baro sensor. I replaced that, took the idle down just a little, no more problem. I had the same thing though, slow, steay advance to 3000 rpm as it got warm, tried looking for vacuum leaks around the carbs, etc. Was really glad it was just an old line. Good luck.
  15. I'm working on mine right now, and the axle was where the problem is. I'm waiting on a new gear that drives the gear unit. It got pretty torn up over time.
