I am using the shield to hold my COPs in place by making bigger opening for them in the shield. I have read of a few guys having with the COPS grounding out to the engine by leaning against the engine. I would also verify that the COPs are fully seated on the spark plugs but it does sound like that maybe the fuel could be an issue also. Yep here in Minnesota we can buy premium non-ethanol gas for motorcycle and boats and small engines. I usually fill all my gas cans with it along with some Seafoam to help keep the gas fresh and also use it as the final fill up of a day of riding with a little Seafoam as I dont get to ride my bike daily as I have a company car for commuting to and from job sites. Just keep riding it and enjoying it and see if things improve as you do. also a nice run thru the gears at high RPMs is very enjoyable IMHO... Rick F.

Well the logos indicate that you do not have a Royale version unless the owner replaced some of the body parts on your bike. So yes he did remove the airpump and its assorted equipment other than the controller in the right fairing panel. Up to you if you want to try and get this working but I think I would just use it as it is for now. Good luck and keep the question coming.. Rick F.

Just curious, does your bike have the plastic shields that sit on top of the valve covers? There are use to direct the air flowing thru the radiator out the back of the engine or thru the vents in the side panels. They help to keep some of the hot air away from the carbs., Just wondering if you had those still in place. Enjoy the riding and the bike. Rick F.

Seafoam might help some but if sitting for 10 years then I would say you need to go thru the carbs and be prepared to spend some bucks. Also make sure you have fresh gas in the tank also. But like Luvmy40 said, check the plugs, caps and wires as there could be some corrosion in there also that will need to address. Just a note here also, you will not find a complete carb kit for these bikes as one has yet to be made for them. You will need to piece together the parts from Yamaha and the aftermarket to get everything you might need. Rick F.

If I recall, only the Venture Royales had the Class system on them. I also think that by 1988, you could only get the Venture Royale and not just a Venture. The Royales came with the Class and radio system on them. So first question is on the side bags, do you seem a emblem that says Royale on them or anywhere else on the bike? I am thinking the previous owner removed the compressor and control valves from the bike. I can see the mounting legs that held the plate with the assemble on the bike under the front part of the rear rack. So people have converted the Class to the non-Class system which is a schrader air valve that is usually located on the left side of the bike where you can adjust the damping for the rear air shock. The also place one up near the center of the forks to adjust the air there. You might have to do some searching for them and see if you can find some black air hoses that use to run to the back of the bike on the right upper side of the frame. I think the previous owner left the controler in the fairing just so he wouldnt have a hole to fill. Good luck and keep up the good work. Rick F.

Sounds like the fork springs are just plain wore out.. I would suggest getting some progressive fork springs for the bike and you will see a major improvement on the ride. Rick F.

You will find the air pump and selector valves underneath the travel trunk behind the seat under a black plastic cover. Looking at my service manual, the plug for the CLASS controller is a 9 pin white plug. Pages 7-73 to 7-96 explain how the system works and how to test the system if it isnt working properly and shows the shape of the connector to help you locate it. Also the CLASS system, air ride, only works when the bike is in the accessory position on the ignition switch. Hopefully the previous owner hasnt cut and removed any of the wires and connectors. On the clutch system, I would rebuild the master cylinder and slave cylinder and and maybe replace the hoses with steel braided ones. You be surprised how much those hoses swell when applying the clutch or the brakes. Let us know if you have other questions Rick F.

My 89 VR gets between 35 and 40 depending on my wrist action. I usually run seafoam in the tank anytime I know it will sit for a while and always store the bike with a full tank of gas and some seafoam. You might try running some seafoam thru the tanks and carbs on your next fill up and see if that makes a difference or not. I would take it by aligning the carbs they synced them together. How is the acceleration on the bike? Could be some issues in the carbs with the diaphragms as they can develop pin holes in them that can affect mileage and performance. Skydoc sold a Stainless steel screw and ball to help to hold in the stock valve but he wasnt selling the valve. Here is one on Ebay right now, it is for a 87 but will work on your 84 also. It can be access from this link... https://www.venturerider.org/manuals/1986-1993 Yamaha Venture Service Manual.pdf Second take a look thru the tech library section for the 1st gens. https://www.venturerider.org/forum/forum/15-venture-and-venture-royale-tech-library-83-93-read-only/ You will find a lot of your questions have been answered in there but still ask them if you arent sure on something. First thing I would do is replace all of your fluids in the bike, including draining the gas tank as you dont know how old that gas is. Open the gas cap and take a whiff will give you an idea of its age. Change the engine oil, differential fluid, grease the wheel bearings, fork oil, brake and clutch fluids, etc. The manual has a good section on what to do and how to do it. For parts, Ebay is a good source for used ones and I prefer and use Parts Shark for my new factory Yamaha parts.. www.partshark.com The do have the joint that is broken on your bike as well as the o-rings for it. Here is a carb sync guide using a carb tune instead of the gauges you have but it might help you.. It appears to me that the 2 gauges on the left, maybe carbs 1 & 2 are not pulling any vacuum at idle or when you rev them up. If you look at the 2 gauges on the right you will see they are pulling vacuum at idle and that is what should happen with all of them. I would want to see the vacuum at idle in the green area of the gauges. You might need to play with the pilot screw adjustments on the carbs and see if that makes a difference or you might have some clogged air passages in those carbs. There is a cleaning trick some of the Vmax guys use called shotgunning the carbs to clean them up without taking them off the bike. Vacuum pressure at idle speed is 33.3kPa (250mm Hg, 9.84 in Hg). I am not sure what your gauges are ready but this is what the service manual for a 86-93 Venture has listed. Vacuum Sych Difference is 1.33 kPa Hg (10mm Hg, .04 in Hg).. You can find a copy of the service manual for the 83-85 Venture in the tech library and that might be of assistance to you also. Good luck Rick F.

You can also check ebay and see if they have a TCI for your bike but yes, in 90-93, Yamaha changed over to a digital TCI so make sure you get one from those years of Ventures. At one time we have a group buy on the Ignitech replacment TCI so there is some information in the tech library on that or available via a search of website. Rick F.

I would say just go out and ride it and enjoy.. get about 1,000 miles on it and then maybe bring it back and check the pilot screws for the idle mixture and then resync the carbs if needed. One thing I do is when I fill my gas tank, I usually add some seafoam to the gas to help keep it fresh and to help keep the fuel system clean. About the only time I dont add seafoam is when I am going to be riding all day and filling the tank a few times, then I usually wait till the last refuel before adding it again. Rick F.

Actually, pulling the motor isnt that bad with 2 people doing it. turn the motor over and it can go quickly. Look over the service manual on the procedure before doing it and that will help. Good luck Rick F.

Yes you should have the o-ring, item, #23, in there on the tube. Also check and see how tight the rubber plugs, 40 & 41 are in the bottom of the jet block. They should be a very snug fit. I would also check the carb diaphgrams for pin holes or tears. They do wear out over time. There really isnt a complete carb kit for these bikes and you need to source the parts from different places including Yamaha. Also you might need to replace the spark plug wires and caps as there could be corrosion in ends of the wires and also the spark plug caps. Be aware there is a small o-ring on my coil end of the wire so when pulling it out of the coil be sure not to loose it. Hope this helps you out. Rick F.

Welcome to the group and on getting a Venture Royale. First off I would add a half of can of seafoam to the new gas if not even a full can.. Next before trying to start it, reinstall the air cleaner box and filter with the top of the box installed also. These carbs need the restriction to function correctly and will not run with it removed at mid to full throttle. You can remove the top of the box to observe the sliders and see if all 4 are moving when idling. This help to figure out if you have a plugged air passage or not. I would go ahead and start the bike with the seafoam in the tank but maybe rock the bike some to mix the seafoam with the gas.. usually you would add the seafoam and then fill with gas. Let the bike fun for maybe 10 to 15 mins and then shut it off and let it be overnight so the seafoam can do its magic. Next day get on it and start it up and run it like you stole it, working the throttle all over the place and see if you feel and hear an improvement in the running. If you need a new battery, I have had excellent result with a Deka built AGM battery and using a smart charger to maintain it. I hope this helps and let us know how this works for you. Rick F.
