    I just returned from a trip to Yellowstone and Glacier National parks. I wasnt on my VR but have a minivan as I had 4 other people along with me. I did go over Beartooth Pass on June 16th as they had opened it just a day and half earlier. The road was in ok shape but they had some very tall snow drifts they had blow the road open thru. I would guess some to be about 20 ft tall. There was some ice in these areas as the snow would melt then refreeze in the shade of the snow. They are talking that there will be construction in these areas also so you might want to check road reports if you plan on riding up there this season. They did have the road tore up between Cooke City and the park entrance with a warning to motorcycles about the road. Yellowstone was nice, seemed like lots of traffic for June and there was still snow there in the higher elevations but the roads were dry. They did have reports of oil and rocking going on this summer there too. The biggest issue I saw was the buffalo of course. The road from West Yellowstone seemed to be very slow in the mornings due to the buffalo using the road to move about. Took me 45 mins a couple of times to get pass them. Also the moose are back in Yellowstone too now. I had one jump out in front of me and ramble across the road, so be careful of them. Also had a report of a 600 lbs Grizzly having dinner on Fishing Bridge road and blocking that road for hours. I then drove up to Glacier via Boseman, Helena and Kalispell, MT. Those road were in good condition and nice scenery along the way. I would recommend to everyone to go north of Helena and take the boat tour for the Gateway to the Mountain. It is about 2 hours long and very beautiful scenery as the Missouri River cut a path though the mountains. In Glacier National Park, the Road to the Sun was not opened yet due to snow and avalanches . They guessing it should be opened by the 4th of July. They did have it open in the lower parts of the mountain but you have to use Hwy 2 to get to the other sides. Hwy 2 thru Montana was in good shape other the some road construction in Havre. This had the road down to gravel and dirt as you went thru town. There was also 6 miles of construction farther east that has it down to gravel and dirt. This is east of Dodson, MT. Other then that, the trip was nice and I wish I could have been on my Venture but that will have to wait for another trip I guess. Hope this helps anyone riding out that way. Rick F.

    I just leave mine in the reserve position all the time and not even mess with it. I just use the fuel gauge and trip mileage to see how far I have gone and if I need to top out the tank. Have never had a problem doing it that way. Rick F.

    Nice bike Matt. Hope to see you around and maybe we can hit the road for a ride. I put a Avon on the back of my 89 VR and have enjoyed the way it handles. Right now I have the Dunlop on the front. I did put on the super brace on the forks but have not experience any wobbles in mine. You might want to make sure frame bolts are tighten properly and grease the swingarm and relay arms also and of course make sure the steering head it tighten properly also. Hope to see you around.     Here is the link to the Sea Foam website. http://www.seafoamsales.com/products.htm I use it in all my gasoline motors and have never had a issue with them. Had it in my 89 VR over the winter with premium non-oxygenated gas and it fired right off and ran like I had parked it yesterday. If you overfilled your oil, try taking off the oil filter assemble and drain the oil out of that and that should get you close to the level you need in the motor. Rick F.

    I replaced mine last year on my bike. You might want to have a new gasket for the middle gear case also in case yours is broken and unusable. Just take your time getting the clutch activator out of it space. It will come out but you will have to work at it. I also took the time to rebuild the clutch master cylinder at the same time and it made a world of difference on the action of the clutch. I am planning on rebuilding the brake system this year and replace all the hoses with Rick's steel braided set for the 89 Venture. Right now I have a front caliper that is seeping a bit. I also replace the brake fluid with synthetic brake fluid so moisture wouldn't be an issue down the road. Good luck and just take you time is the key and also what the others said about the piston seal and such. Rick F.

    Welcome Dave, With your idle problem, you might want to check for air leaks around the carbs and double check the plugs on the sync tubes as they will crack and are hard to see unless you move them a bit. I had this on my 89 Venture that had been sitting in a garage for 5 years before I purchased it. On bleeding your brakes, be aware there is a bleeder between the front of the tank cover and the steering head. I had missed this one when I first bleed mine and it makes a difference. Also the left front and the rear brake is link together. I would suggest if you havent yet, download the service manual from the site here and it will help you alot with the maintenance on your ride.     You might want to check and see if the cables need some oiling. The RPMs should drop off fairly quickly. I have had an issue like this and only needed to oil the cables and that loosened them up. You can check this with the left engine side cover off and watch the throttle shaft as you open and release the throttle. They should snap back quickly. Hope this helps. Rick F.

    Download the service manual file for your 1st gen bike from this link here.. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3384 It talks about how to remove the fairing and just reverse the order to reinstall it. Also just ask questions here. Start with the inner panels and the then the outer sides. Good luck and let us know how it is going.. Rick F.

There are other places online to get parts also, just find one you like. A lot of the places have the yamaha parts fiches online so you can see the parts and click on what you want to order.     I think you need to ask yourself if you want to be around all these people for 5 nights. Staying at a college in the summer in the dorms can be inexpensive and the bull sessions at night could be fun and entertaining.They might be sharing photos from past trips or who knows what. It doesn't sound unreasonable for 5 night and 4 1/2 days worth of food to me. I guess it just depends on what you expect from the trip. Good Luck, Rick F.

    Does anyone know what the enclosed packet is with the seal kit? I have one of the rear caliper seal kits already but haven't opened it yet but was wonder what the packet is used for. The service manual doesn't mention anything about it so that is why I am asking. I am thinking maybe a lubricate for the seals but I was just planning on using brake fluid to do that when I assembled them. Thanks, Rick F.

    I am looking to rebuild my braking system on my Venture and have a question on the caliper seals for the front brakes. The microfiche shows two different calipers seal kits for the front calipers. Part numbers 1KT-W0047-00-00 and 1NL-W0047-00-00. I did notice there is also two different part numbers for the piston so I am guessing that the pistons are different sizes and that is why there are two different seal kits. Is this correct?     One thing you need to take into consideration is where is the TV going to be places. Plasma is a good choice if their is no reflections of light. LCD is better if there will be outside light, ie sunshine, on the screen. I would recommend a 1080p HDTV with an upconvertor built into the unit. This will help upgrade the incoming signal to 1080p standards and helps with old DVD movies and such. I just purchased a Sony 40" LCD Bravia at a local electronics store. They were more then happy to let me see different video sources on different TVs. I went with a LCD as it is sitting in my living room with a big picture window facing west. I did break down and get a HD cable convertor and and HD package from the local cable company. I used a HDMI cable to connect between the two. Now some channels are broadcast in 720i, 720p and 1080i but there is still alot of programs that are still standard format. I suggest go to a local shop and talked to them about what you want and expect and see what they recommend. Good Luck.. Rick F.

    Thanks all, I was looking at the Custom Dynamics Radiantz 1.85 " 1157 direct base leds but was wondering on the clearance issues but it sounds like they will work. I am wondering if installing a load resistor wouldn't solve the warning light issue as I am sure the computer is looking at the load to see if all of the bulbs are working or not. I think I have seen some listed for this purpose. Thanks again.. Rick F.

    Has anyone installed LEDs in the 1st gen in place of the 1157 bulbs and if so, what did you use and how do you like it. I found that I have a burnt out running light in my taillight and was thinking about using an LED bulb for them. Thanks, Rick F.
