For my 89 VR, I use the Rotella 15w-40 diesel grade oil as it has no friction modifiers in it. With a wet clutch you dont want those do you need to be very careful when using automotive oils and they use the modifiers in them to reduce the friction. Not sure what you are riding, but your pictures looks to be a 2nd Gen and you should be able to use the Rotella in a dino or synthetic version as they have both. Good Luck Rick F.

I was thinking of a opening scene for the next James Bond movie as 007 escapes from someplace and surfs out to a submarine to be picked up. Of course need to add machine guns and a small rocket launcher to the bike also. Yea I would try it I think, least to surf across a lake or river. Might come in handy up here in Minnesota in the summer, winter not much of an issue.. Rick F.

Here is a link to it. http://www.firstdivisionmuseum.org/ They have a very good museum about the history of the Big Red One thru the history of the unit. Rick F.

Top Box amber lens?
cimmer replied to Great White's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The lenses on the aftermarket item are held in with glue. I just slowly worked my loose with a small screwdriver and slowly pulling on the lens. They are just glued in and are meant to be removed for bulb replacement. Then I just cleaned out the old glue and used RTV to secure the lens back in. Rick F. -

Top Box amber lens?
cimmer replied to Great White's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This was an aftermarket item offer but discontinued for a while now by Big Bike Parts out of Rice Lake, Wisconsin. You can still get the lenses as of a few years ago and you see one pop up on ebay now and then. They are extra turn signals for the yellow lense and you had the option of making the red lense either a brake light or running light but to be honest they didnt put out a lot of light as they were only 4 194 bulbs in there. I ended up stripping those out of mine and adding red LEDs and a flash unit so now people can tell I am stopping even in broad daylight. Hope that helps. Rick F. -
What is this bracket tab for?
cimmer replied to Great White's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The item circled in red on the orginal post, is where the helmet lock goes on a 1990 and newer Venture as they moved it from the rear of the bike to the front of the bars. Most likely the bars came off of a 90 or newer bike. If you check the travel trunk rack on the back of the bike, you should find the two helmet locks. Hope that helps. Rick F. -
Just another thought here, what did you use in the ultrasonic cleaner as a fluid? I read not to use carb cleaner as there are o-rings around the throttle shafts and the cleaner would destroy there if left to soak in it for any length of time. Might be worth checking into. Also the first indication you had before the rebuild with the Morgan Carbtune was getting low and erratic reading, be sure that you have the restrictors that are in the hoses near the carbs and not near the Morgan tune. Yes I did this and had the same issues that caused you to rebuild the carbs. I noticed I could squeeze the hose and they would became readable and then realized my mistake. Switched them around and then got the correct readings on the Carbtune. Just something to think about. I also will do what is called "Shooting the Shotgun" on the carbs and that helps a lot also. http://vmax.lvlhead.com/tips/shotgun.htm Good luck and I hope you get it resolved. Rick F.

If you are referring to the Pouch that is on the right front of the travel trunk and the two on each side of the fairing, you can fit whatever fits in there. Stash whatever will fit but if it has any value, I wouldnt leave it there unattended overnight. I know I have passengers that stash candy or small item in the rear one so they can access it while riding. I personally removed the two front ones as I found my knees hitting them but I would but my wallet in there while riding as I didnt care to sit on it as I rode. Hope that helps. Rick F.

Looks like it has a lot of the chrome accessories on it also but be sure to go thru it all and dont be afraid to ask questions about what to do or what this or that is. And be sure to have fun with it. Rick F.

After market TCI ?
cimmer replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I just installed my Ignitech TCI, purchased from Gary, and converted to the Coil On Plug for my 89 VR and I can say I am very pleased. I reset the carbs and sync after the upgrade and the bike is very smooth and responsive on the short drives I have taken and it starts easily now with just a few revs of the motor. Gary's kit is very complete and simple to install and he supplies everything you could need. The only issue is now that the old coils and TCI box dont need to be on the bike, I am thinking that if I lay my AGM battery on its side and seeing if I can slide it in that opening and then build a nice bracket for the fuse block, new TCI and other items to sit on and giving me more room under the false tank cover. I believe that is what one of the other members did to his bike and that might have been Gary. Thanks Gary for the great kit. Rick F.- 33 replies

Latest on my 89VR tinkering
cimmer replied to BlueSky's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The issue with the Motion Pro unit is that the o-rings dry out and dont provide the proper seal. They sell a refill kit of the fluid and seals but I gave up on mine also as I replaced the seals and such and then next year it was doing the same thing. I ended up buying a Carbtune and havent looked back since. It works great and nothing to spill out of it. Rick F. -
Need to lift the rear a bit
cimmer replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
How much higher do you want to raise it and can pumping up the rear air shock give you the needed lift? I have seen a company on eBay selling shocks for the 1st Gens but they are priced very high IMHO. I checked and didnt see anything listed today but you might want to keep an eye out there. At one time, Progressive made a rear shock for the 1st Gens but it has been discontinued but can still be found at some retail locations. I am not sure if this would increase your ride height but would stiffen the ride some. They also made just a replacement spring for the stock Venture shock to replace the factory one. You can tell this as they are painted red and do occasionally show up on eBay from time to time. Here is a link to one on Dennis Kirk website for the completes shock. https://www.denniskirk.com/progressive-suspension/465-series-rear-shock-850-1200-spring-rate-lbs-in-465-1114.p584162.prd/584162.sku Good luck and let us know what you find. Thanks Rick F -
Was looking for a 4 brush starter and found this on ebay and was wondering if anyone has purchased one of these starters from Rare Electrical. I would look at a carb sync also as I bet they are out of sync with each other and that can effect how it run also. If you havent checked the diaphragms yet, I would pull them and see if they have holes in the rubber section, and if so they will most likely need to be replaced. Let us know how it goes.. Rick F. -
89 VR Not Starting
cimmer replied to philtrex's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Get yourself a AGM battery, and I would recommend a Deka brand and also a smart battery charger such as a Battery Tender brand that will let you hook it up for long term storage of your battery. I dont think the 10.4v is enough to turn over the engine, so I think I would be looking for that new battery if it doesnt charge up. Rick F. -
Will, go to this page and click on the link and you can download the service manual for your Venture and that should help you with understanding how things are layed out on the bike. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?3384-First-Gen-Service-Manuals It is in a PDF format so you can print out the pages you need to assist you in repairing your ride.
