You might recommend that he takes a refresher course and then the both of you taking an advanced riding course together where you use your own bikes. By doing it together you are not telling him he cant handle the bike but the both of you are just brushing up on your skills. That might help him understand what this bike can do and what his skill level is really at plus lets you see it also. Plus an instructor might be able to tell him constructively that he needs to work on certain skills. Just a thought, but I guess it depends on the guy and how he reacts to being told things. Good luck Rick F.

Another DUH clutch question
cimmer replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Look at this from the tech library, http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?10518-Clutch-Upgrade , it is for a second gen but works for the MKII. I replaced my half disk and plate with full size ones and that did away with the wire that retains the half hight ones. I also scuffed up my plates with a cross hatch pattern with some fine sandpaper to give them a little more bit. Hope that helps but you can also refer to the service manual in the tech forum also. The one thing to watch out for is when you torque the botls down, make sure you use an inch pound torque wrench as it is a fairly small amount. Rick F. -
Tugs Induction System
cimmer replied to Ronsun's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Have you taken the cover off of the airbox and seen what is underneath with all the wires and fused going into the cover. I would be curious as to what is in the airbox also or if there are some activators in there also. You might PM the gentleman in the older post, Poledar, and see if he has anything on the Tugs as he did mention he was installing one on his 86 VR. On another thought here, if you are having a hard time getting the bike to run correctly, and unable to get any information on the Tugs system, I would look at getting a set of stock carbs and maniford tubes and getting it running correctly that way so you are not fighting this mod. It sounds like the carbs may have been modified for this to work properly. Good luck and if you need a hand, let me know as I am not that far away from you.. Rick F. -
Tugs Induction System
cimmer replied to Ronsun's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
share some pictures with us would help. The electronic on the airbox could be that the ignition control box could have been moved to get it away from the heat of the engine. I found this on the Tugs Induction System in a previous post. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?20950-What-gas-mileage-do-you-get/page8 I am not aware of this setup myself. Good luck. O ring price from stealer
cimmer replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks, but this is the place where we had a group buy on carb diaphragms a while back and I noticed that they carry a large selection of replacement parts for the Ventures. It is a good site to book mark for future reference. Rick F. -

I have been on Needles Highway and have meet full size tour buses in the eye of the needle. I asked the gate attendant and he said that they regularly get tour buses on Needles Highway and the tunnel in the needle is just big enough to let them thru. Needless to say it took us about an hour before we could get thru on our motorcycles as the buses had traffic backed up for miles behind them and it is a single land tunnel so it is a first come first go type of deal. So maybe an RV could make it thru if you felt comfortable doing it and didn't mind a scrap or two.. Rick F.

Replacing clutch...what parts to order?
cimmer replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not sure what bike you are doing this one but I found that just replacing the pressure plate spring with an EBC one, on my 89 VR and then cross hatching the plates and just resoaking the friction plates in oil made a big different and stop the higher engine speed slippage I was having. If you have a pre 86 VR they use springs on each bolt. Here is an article from the tech library, it is for a second gen but it is the same setup, http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?10518-Clutch-Upgrade. The removal of the half disk is just replaces with a full disk is all and is a standard part. Rick F. -
If you are talking the badlands as in South Dakota, I would hope you would include the Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore. I would also take in Devils Tower in Wy and they have a nice KOA just outside the park entrance also. There is a lot of see in the Black Hills even without the tourist traps. Rick F.

Looking for a Braided SS Brake line shopping list - 88 vr
cimmer replied to Trader's topic in Watering Hole
I replaced the lines on my 89 a number of years ago and I can tell you it made a big difference in how the bike stopped. The original lines where old and swelling when pressure was applied but not anymore. Took some getting used to as it was very easy to lock up the front tire in a panic stop so be prepared to practice a bit with the new setup to get a better feel for it. I didnt de-link the brakes as I felt the new step up was performing well. I did rebuild the calipers and master cylinders when I replaced all the rubber lines with Steel braided hoses. I used another vendors setup at the time as I dont believe Skydoc was selling his yet and the setup I used only replaced the factory hoses. Good luck. Rick F. -
West Yellowstone is the Western entrance and has numerous hotel and camping options there. It can be hard to get accommodations in the park as a lot of them fill up over a year in advance. Also some of the park campgrounds are hard sided required sites due to bear issues. This is especially true around the fishing bridge area and has usually been a good area to see bears at. Good luck and enjoy the trip. Rick F.

radio and cb
cimmer replied to Mcolabella's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
First thing to make sure is that the headset button isnt pressed on the Amplifier panel on the left fairing panel. It is labeled "H PH" and is next to the tone knob. This being activates would keep you from hearing via the speakers in the fairing. Try listen to the radio but make sure the CB is turned off as you do as it designed to override the radio output. One more thought on this subject is that with Progressive springs installed, I have found no need to add air to the front forks as the bike handles great without the addition of air. I would recommend replacing the fork oil no matter what you do and maybe do this first. You should find out fairly quick when you drain out the old oil. If you dont get much out, then you have a leak, if not , replace it and see what happens. The Progressive springs will change the amount of oil that the forks need but the directions for the springs let you know how much you need for each one. Rick F.

Found a manual for you Vector VEC 1090A changer and it sounds like it wont desulfate a motorcycle battery as it states in the manual, "BATTERY RECONDITION MODE should only be used with 10 amp hour (Ah) or larger capacity lead-acid batteries" and from the manual it says use the 2-amp setting for motorcycles. Here is a link to the manual. http://www.manualslib.com/manual/625859/Vector-Vec1090-A.html#manual Rick F.

Cant say for your charger but I use the BatteryMinder Plus model 12117 and it states it does work on all 12 volt Lead-acid batteries which includes AGM. Been using it on my Deka AGM battery for about 4 years now and it still works great. Their website is http://www.batteryminders.com. Hope that helps, Rick F.

Tci replacement
cimmer replied to Big Auggie's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
One thought here is have you replace the old fuse panel with a more modern one yet. I found that on my 89 that the original fuse panel fuse holders had lost their grip or spring to hold the fuse tight. Replacing with the blade fuses might help with this issue and give you a better piece of mind about the bike. There are numerous post about this in the archives on this subject. Just a thought.. Who really knows/understands the 1st Gen CLASS/shock system ??

Glad you figured it out. Your guys work on this will help us all down the road if it occurs to our 1st Gens. Thanks again. Rick F. -
Who really knows/understands the 1st Gen CLASS/shock system ??
cimmer replied to KIC's topic in Watering Hole
Just a quick thought to try this.. pump up the system to the max, about 75 psi and then disconnect the wiring harness from the CLASS controler and see if that helps to hold the air in the system. It could be a leaking solenoid or one that is getting a small electrical signal from the class unit. Sounds like you have check about everything else. Rick F. -
Aux led lights
cimmer replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I only have the fog lights and use the supplied switch to control them and usually have them on with both the high and low beams. I have the right one direct to help light up the white line and ditches with the left one more on the center line for when I am riding in rain and fog mostly and to help being seen and didnt want to blind oncoming traffic and possible endanger myself. Rick F. -
Leave the site as is and see what happens over the next couple of years. I think changing it to include other bikes will just drive membership away. Rick F.

Who really knows/understands the 1st Gen CLASS/shock system ??
cimmer replied to KIC's topic in Watering Hole
It sounds like maybe the air release solenoid valve could be leaking air. There is a complete section in the service manual on the CLASS system and how to troubleshoot it in the electrical section. I would start there and see if that helps solve it. If you dont have the manual, there is a link to one in the tech section that you can download. How close was the rear flap to the ground when you installed it or first got the bike? Hope this helps. Rick F.
