  1. Always check the kill switch when the bike wont start. I dont know how many time it just jumps there on its own.. Rick F.
  2. I ended up installing a Clear view windshield on my 89 VR. I ordered the GT25 with the adjustable vent and a gray tint and enjoy riding behind it. I am 6ft and with the stock seat it was a good height for me. Here is the URL to the site. http://www.clearviewshields.com/motorcycle-windshield/yamaha/venture-royale-1983-1993-shields/ Sorry I cant help you with the stock height but 15.5 inches seems a little low to me. Hope that helps Rick F.
  3. There are parts on ebay as of now. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-Venture-XVZ-1200-Off-1983-XVZ1200-carburetor-mikuni-mount-rails-/351456907325?hash=item51d476d03d:g:icwAAOSwHnFVqBIA&vxp=mtr Rick F.
  4. I have a Mills Fleet Farm relabeled Deka AGM for my 89 and I have just got into the habit of putting a smart charger on it when the bike has been sitting for a while. I am using a BatteryMinder Plus model 12117. I believe this is a discontinued item as Northern Tool had a heck of a buy on them last Black Friday. My battery is about 5 years old and hasnt cause me on bit of trouble. Rick F.
  5. They are very important and are still available from Yamaha. What you need is parts 4 & 5 from the oil filter parts fiche. Here is a link from Partshark.com to the proper page. http://www.partshark.com/oemparts/a/yam/5107f835f870022108d65768/oil-filter You can order from them or just check your local dealer and see if he has them in stock but I will do it sooner then later. Welcome to the group. Rick F.
  6. I would suggest check the other plugs to make sure they are there also just in case you need to order all 4. These are fairly easy to access. The easiest way I have found to pull them out is with the terminal end of a spark plug. Remove the cap to wear you just have the treaded end of the spark plug and it will screw into the plugs in the cylinder jacks and then give it a pull and out comes the plug. Just remember there is coolant behind the plug. Good luck. Rick F.
  7. Sounds like you will need to rebuild the slave cylinder for the clutch as that most likely is the issue. Happens to us all and it isnt too bad to fix but you must pull off the middle gear cover on the back left of the engine. If you have the service manual for the website here, then look under the Chas section and the Hydraulic Clutch and it will show you how to do it. I would recommend getting the parts before you start so you can do it in a day. You will need to drain the oil as the Middle Gear case cover has oil behind it. So you will need to get a gasket for that. Here is a couple of links for more information on how to do it.. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?116337-Clutch-Hydraulic-Rebuild-Tutorial http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?66302-Slave-Cylinder-Replacement' Check those out and let us know if you have more questions Rick F.
  8. Clay, have you double checked the plugs on the vacuum ports on the carbs to make sure they are not cracked and leaking. I have an ignitech replacement ignition system we could try on your bike and see how it performs. It has a MAP sensor and doesnt use the stock pressure sensor. You might want to make sure the restrictor is still in line from the #2 carb vacuum port to the pressure sensor. It is located near the carb. You might also want to check the conditions of the electrical connectors and make sure they are clean. A good thing to try is some contact cleaner on them to make sure they have a good connection. I would do this to the pressure sensor connections and the TCI box connections. Let me know if you would like to try the Ignitech unit. Rick F.
  9. Another place to get carb parts and others for the Venture is at Sirius Consolidated Inc out of Canada. Here is a link for the Venture items they sell. http://www.siriusconinc.com/search_result.php?make=2&model=Venture%20Royale&part=All&partno=&x=56&y=16&search=search&start=25 They also have the diaphragms (SD-1) which if you mention that you are a Venturerider.org member they will discount for you. On the jet, you might need to look in the parts manual to see what is the stock jet, http://www.partshark.com/oemparts/a/yam/50042b41f8700209bc78980a/carburetor and see which jet it is and what the size is suppose to be. Hope that helps Rick F.
  10. I used the air shields on my 89 VR to hold the COPs in place better. I cut a bigger hole in the rubber around where the COPs drop thru and that seems to be working to hold them in place. Rick F.
  11. What so the instruction say for you Barnett disks. I have not installed those so I cant offer any advise on those. Try them and see what happens is about all I can say.. Maybe one of the other member can offer some advise on them. Rick F.
  12. Actually a lot of us replace the half disk and steel plate with a full size and do away with the wire. Check out this post and you can use it for a reference even though it is for a 2nd gen.. there isnt that much difference between them. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?10518-Clutch-Upgrade Rick F.
  13. When you reinstall that clutch, make sure you line the disk up correctly as from looking at the picture the previous owner didnt have it correct. Make sure the notches in the disk match up with the basket. The outer disk is in the correct spot the others arent. Rick F.
  14. I installed the COP on my 89 last year and have not regretted it once. The bike is starting easier and just run better all around. I did not install the load resistors as I have the Ignitech system to install on the bike but with the stock TCI, no issues to report. I have future plans to remove the coil and TCI bracket and move my AGM battery to that location. I also keep the air defectors about the cylinder heads and made some holes in them to hold the COP in place so they wouldnt move around. Good luck. Rick F.
  15. The EBC part number for the rear brake rotor is MD2049 for the 86-93 Ventures. I know they had different part numbers for the front ones in older catalogs. Hope this helps. Rick F.
  16. For a radiator cap you can use these also... Radiator cap Stant 11227 or 227. (It has a spec.of 13lbs pressure) Autozone cap CST 7513 Here is some information I have gathered over the years on replacement hoses... I cant attest to if these work but it might be a starting point.. Front Cylinder Gates # 11601 /Napa -Rear Cylinder Gates # 09821 /NAPA -Upper rad. hose Gates # 8722/NAPA -S hose under the rad. Gates # 20521 /Napa 7333 If you do use any of these hoses, let us know how it goes.. Thanks Rick F.
  17. the auto store replacement will last for a bit but I found the the OEM ones or replacements meant for a motorcycle seems to hold up better. I got my replacements from Yamaha but I see that Sirius Consolidated, http://www.siriusconinc.com, also have replacement caps. Good luck.. Rick F.
  18. one other thing to check is to make sure the connection for the wire is clean and tight. On my 89 it is a pin on the back of the sending unit and not a spade connector and it had a loose connection with intermittent connection. I reshaped the connector and cleaned the pin and connector and that seemed to resolve the issue. Hope that helps. Rick F.
  19. Welcome to the site. I would download the service manual that is located in the tech section for the 1st Gen. http://labs.trunkful.com/vrmanuals/index.cfm Look at that as the throttle cable is a 2 piece affair as the cruise control cable attaches on the left side of the fairing as you are sitting on the bike. I havent replaced it myself but have seen the junction box for the cables. Also look at the parts diaphragm as it will show the parts you might need. I use the one from Partshark.com since I buy from them a lot. Good luck and ask more questions here. Rick F.
  20. I would check the plug wires and caps first. How are are they and how do they ohm out? Rick F.
  21. Cant make this one as I will be on vacation that weekend. Rick F.
  22. I havent put any air into my front forks since installing the Progressive Springs in my 89 VR. I would look at the solenoids as I agree that it sound like the front one isnt closing when you try to pump up the rear. Rick F.
  23. The TCI is located under the battery box along with the coils. I would install the resistor inline with the wire and connect it to the screw just on the steering side of the fuse panel. Right off the top of my head, I dont remember the resistor size but it is in one of the post here or in the tech section. There is also a PDF of the service manual in the tech section also that you might want to download as it can be a big help to you also. Rick F.
  24. The wiring is also different. the 86 uses 4 pickups the 90-93 use a single one. You should be able to reflash the unit if you have all the software that was sent with the Ingitech unit. I have a unit for a 91 and am looking for the cables for an 86-89 unit, maybe we can work out a trade. Let me know. Rick F.
