Welcome to the group. Could be a number of things. Maybe the previous owner wired it to run all the time, the switch could be bad or maybe there is a toggle switch that the previous owner hooked up to it to control it. I would start by checking out the wiring and seeing if is running to the temperature switch. I dont own a second generation Venture so I not 100% sure on where it is located. I have a buddy that just picked up a 2017 F150 and when we was deciding on the engine to get, he asked the mechanics at the dealership and 8 out of 10 said the 5.0L V8 over the ecoboost. Most of the F150 in the shop where ecoboost equipped F150. The ecoboost has to run near max to make the number to be close to the 5.0V. I have a 2011 F150 Lariat with the 5.0 and I get about 18 MPG when driving at about 70 or so. Of course it depends on the weather conditions and wind speed and direction but I am very happy with it. If you are not having any issues with your truck, keep it, maintain it properly and it should last for a long time for you. Hope this helps Rick F.

Looks a lot like Sport Wheel just south of the Twin Cities in Jordan Minnesota. They have a lot of 1st Gen MK1s and a few 1st Gen MK2s but they have been striped of most the good parts or left to the elements with whats left. Clutch bolt torque for an '87 VR

Per the service manual for the 86-93 Venture, 5.8ft-lb for the clutch bolts. Refer to page 3-68 in the manual, it is in the engine assembly and adjustment section in the parts diagram. And yes, dont use a 3/8 inch torque wrench but a 1/4 inch one. The 3/8" isnt accurate enough to measure 5.8 ft-lb and you will over-tighten it and snap it off before you know you even did it.. trust me on this.. I actually ended up replacing all of mine with new ones just to be safe. Hope this helps Rick F. -
Quick starter Replacement Question

If I recall correctly, the 2 brush starter has a big Phillips type head on the side of the body. The 4 brush does not have this phillips head on the body of the starter. Hope that helps. Rick F. -

If you do cook at a camp site, don't wear the clothes you cook in to bed or even store them in your tent as the bears might mistake them for food also with the scent on them. Also a nice ride would be Bear Tooth pass in Montana and Wyoming but it will be a chilly one for sure. Rick F. -
I mix Seafoam in all my small engine gas including the motorcycle. I add an ounce or so a gallon before I fill the tank up. I have the option here in Minnesota of using non-ethanol premium gas, which I use in all my small engines and motorcycle. The non-ethanol premium is uses in the bike when I park it for the season but I do add Seafoam to the bike when I park it for the week if I can. Doing it this way I have no issues starting an engine that had been sitting used for 6 months or so. I been doing this for years and it works for me. Hope this helps. Rick F.

If you havent gotten it on yet.. get some all tread rod that is the same size as the bolts and cut it into length that is about an inch longer then the over all length of the bolts. 3 pieces should do it and then space them and screw them in to the case. These will guide the cover with the stator and and let you use the other bolts to secure the cover. Back out the all tread rod and use the remaining bolts and torque it to specs and you should be ready to go. You might also want to make sure the opening that the wires go out has a nice coating of silicon sealant around it and around the wires so you dont have an oil leak from there. You will see this around the kick stand area if you do. You should be able to get the all tread at a local hardware store or maybe one of the box stores. Hope this helps. Rick F.

I see there is a NOS vacuum activator list on ebay for the 86-93 VR and it includes the throttle cable with the activator. If you are still looking for a new cable it looks like you need to buy the whole activator to get a new one. Spitting oil

My first thought would be valve seals might be leaking a bit and with it sitting for a while, allowed some oil to find its way into the cylinders or onto the exhaust valves. I think I would check that out first and of course the antifreeze leak could be the one up by the system drain valve that a lot of us experience. Let us know what you find please. Rick F. -
Does you bike have or have you upgraded the battery cables to the starter and ground yet and you might also want to find a 4-brush started and replace the 2-brush starter that most likely is on the bike now. I would do both of these if they havent been done yet and make sure the bolts for the starter gear are properly torqued. I was getting some sounds like that out of my bike when it got hot but once the 4-brush starter was installed, I dont anymore. You can usually find good used ones on ebay as Yamaha switched to them for the 91 and up Ventures and Vmaxs I beleive. You can tell when you dont see the big Phillips head screw on the main body of the starter motor. For upgraded battery cables, they were a few members selling them here in the past in the classified section. Hope this helps Rick F

Confused on ordering friction plates

Check out this write up. It is for a 2nd Gen but the clutch is the same as the 1 Gen MKII, which is what we have. I used it and it helped a lot with then I did this. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?10518-Clutch-Upgrade I didnt do the Barnett upgrade but used an EBC Diaphragm clutch spring instead as it was simpler to set up. The needles set, 1NL-1490J-00-00, for the 86-93 Ventures MKII are no longer available from anywhere I can find, so be careful with the ones you have now. I ordered some different carb "kits" but none of these "kits" are complete and you will need to order parts from Yamaha. I thought the K&L 18-2879 had the most usable parts in it for the cost. It includes the float bowl, starter, and jet block gaskets. Also an assortment of O-rings that are needed. It does include a needle value and seat but I think I would order the Yamaha one as it includes the net filter also. I would also use Yamaha for the main nozzle. SCI in Canada, http://www.siriusconinc.com , also has a selection of after market carb parts but I would stay away from their keyster carb kits but I did order the jet block plugs from there as they offer them in a package of 8 with 4 of both sizes that you need. I also ordered the carb joints that attach the carbs to the heads plus a set of vacuum plugs for the vacuum ports on the joints. They also offered the group here a discount on the diaphragms for the slides and still might if you contact them. For my Yamaha parts source I use Partshark.com and have had good luck with them. Need help with a part number.

After looking at the parts fiche, check under electrical 1 listing and it appears to me that the cable is attached with the Vacuum Actuator assemble which is no long available from Yamaha. I have check the parts fiche and I dont find a listing for the cruise control cable listed. I have checked a few online sources and had no luck with locating a replacement cable part number. Do you have your fairing apart so you can get a good look at the Vacuum Actuator and see how the cable is attached to the actuator. You might be able to take it off and see if you can find one at a local dealer. Good luck and let us know what you find. Take a few pictures of it and share it here as that might help us all. Thanks. I am sure that the Funny Car was detuned a bit as not to hurt any parts as they consistently run under 4 sec in 1000 ft. at 300+ MPH. Not bad from a standing start and yes they dont turn worth a crap. Rick F.

Lost my drive train!

I think I would get it on the center stand and see if you can move the rear wheel with your hands when it is in neutral first and see if you hear any noises. Then I would try it with the transmission in second and see if you can spin the rear wheel that way. Try the simple stuff first before tearing into anything. Good luck.. Rick F. -
The floats are still available from Yamaha with the part number being 1FK-14985-00-00 and a retail price of $50.90 but can be had for $31.68 plus shipping. I would check the float levels before pulling them off if the drain lines are sticking out of the brackets on each side of the bike. Service manual has a good explanation on how to do this and it can be done without pulling the carbs. Setting the float level isnt too hard to get it close as the carb fuel bowl has some markings inside of it that help to get it close. We can give you some assistance and photos on what to look for if it comes to that. Good luck and dont give up on it.. Rick F.

I have those travel trunk bars on the side of my 89 VR. They are a Ventureline item that I was able to pick up NOS when I first got my VR. I actually picked them up at a dealer and was the only Ventureline item they had left in stock. Here is a picture of them on my bike. I am thinking he has them mounted backwards from what I do. Hi Jack, welcome to the group. I also have an 89 VR, so I will try to answer some of your questions . The fuel pump does cycle on when you turn on the key to the run position and only runs for a short bit to top of the carbs. There are 4 overflow lines from the carbs, one for each, and they do exit the bike down by the swingarm. I would suggest taking off the saddle bags so you can get a clearer look and see if it is all or just one and maybe trace it back to the offending carb. Chances are you might have a stuck float that is holding open the needle seat valve and flooding the carb. But also check and make sure the gas supply line from the fuel filter to the carbs doesnt also have a leak. I know you said it is holding pressure but better to be safe then sorry. I would also remove the rear tire too, as you might as well service the rear end and swing arm if you havent do so yet. One of the mods that a lot of us do is to add grease zerks to the pivot joints to keep things greased. I believe there is a how to on this in the library for 1st Gens. I would also recommend getting the service manual for the bike, there is a PDF file in the tech section that can be downloaded to you PC. You should not have to pull the tank or the seat to see this but removing the side panels to the fairing and the false tank cover does help. Also the air filter box can easily be removed also to get some light on the subject also. The overflow lines connect to the part of the carbs that face the center of the carb setup so taking off the air filter box would make it easier to see them, but also when trying to run the bike without the air filter assemble, the bike will not rev up properly without the air box. Be aware that any "kit" you buy will not be complete for your carbs and you will need to buy some items from Yamaha if they are available still. The biggest thing to replace will be your slide diaphragms and these are available from a couple of sources. When ordering from the Carburetor Shop website, I would suggest you pay for the faster shipping, as when I ordered from them this spring and use the standard shipping, it took about a month for the parts to arrive as they come from across the pond. It looks like a nice kit with all the o-rings and gaskets included but you still will need to order parts from another source to replace everything in the carbs. Good luck Rick F.

I was out there in June and was able to get a ride in on the Dragon.. We road it on a Tuesday about 430pm and not little to no traffic on it and have a real nice ride both direction on it. It was my buddy on his 89 VR and me on mine. I dont think I ever made it out of second gear the whole time. I also enjoy the ride to the Dragon from Maggie Valley area. Very nice riding out in that area... Rick F.

Demo ride impression 2018 Star Venture

A little more to add here, we did play around with the parking assist and how to use it. One thing to note is when engaged, you dont need to use the brakes as the electric motor locks in and the bike wont move till you push the control buttons. When you release the button the bike stops and stays stopped. I didnt move the bike a lot, just forward and back with the assist as it was in line for the ride but it was simple to use and engage. Also the adjustable windshield was nice also. I ended up using it at the up most position as the bugs were getting thick out in the country, but it raises and tilts as it changes positions. This is also able to be done while moving on the bike. I should also note that when testing the 2 helmets in the travel trunk, they were full face helmets we used for the test. Also, the Loveland Co area is where the demo bikes were headed to next so the members out there will have a chance to ride them also. And I know they were taking a full dressed one, as the Yamaha guys called it, to Sturgis as it had already left Star Days for there. I also see that they will be offering demo rides on the Star Venture out there for the week of Sturgis, Saturday, August 05, 2017 - Saturday, August 12, 2017. Rick F.
