Log cabin kits/prefab, anyone with any experience?
cimmer replied to CaseyJ955's topic in Watering Hole
In truth, most of the log homes are kits any way, built at the sellers site and then numbered, disassembled, and ship to the construction site. I remember driving south of Missoula, Mt once and seeing dozen of log home builders along the highway. Some using backhoes to move logs, other with multiple cranes to assist in the building. Be prepare for the cabin to settle a lot once it is assembled, so accommodations for that needs to be built into the doors, windows, cabinets, and just about anything hung to the outside walls. Log home are beautiful but there is still a lot of maintenance to them so that they last a long time. Good luck with your search. Rick F. -
What year Venture are we dealing with here? If you please add it to your profile then it will show up on all of your post below your name. Sounds like the CMS might be toast.. I would remove the solder connection you made and see if that made a difference in it operating. I am not sure what that plug could be used for. You should be able to figure it out with a service manual by looking it over for the wire color combo to a connector. The fan thermo switch is the flat blade connection on the hose joint. The pin like connector is for the temp gauge. And the wire with the pin connector is the ground for both of them. Hope this helps. Rick F.

Crush washer size?
cimmer replied to Patmac6075's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I dont think there is anything special about the copper brake hose washers and you most likely could get them from a local parts store. Take an old one with you to match it up and you should be set. Rick F. -
Do you have the hazard switch connected to its plug? If the hazard switch isnt connected the turn signals will not work. The front turn signals do operate as a running light also but the rears do not. On the Temp gauge, verify that the connection is there on the sending unit. It is located on the right side of the bike up by the right side radiator grill. It can easily come loose and not be noticed when working on the fairing. Are there any indication on the CMS, does it go thru the self test when starting the bike? The headlight issue, I would double check the wiring and see what is up. If you havent yet, there is a service manual located in the tech read me section of the library. Hope this helps. Rick F.

My first car was a 70 Chevelle SS 396/350HP. Cranberry Red with a black vinyl top. Black interior, Muncie M21 4 speed and no power anything. I got that car when I was 18 and sold it about 9 years later. It need a lot of rust fixed and at that time there wasnt much available to fix it like there is now. Be nice to get a car like that back but I dont think I would keep it stock but make a restomod out of it. Rick F.

Don, I was able to get in with just doing a manual entry on the address line with just http://www.venturerider.org and it directed me to the login in page. I would say you have it fixed. I was able to access the site after the change to the https so was surprised with it gave me the directory listings instead. Thanks for all that you do here Don.. Rick F.

Don, I have issues getting in with the https://www.venturerider.org as it would show me the listing for the directories for the appilication. I was able to pick out the forum directory and was then given the forum page and login. I tried it a couple of times and received the same directory listing. I did change the bookmark of URL to this, https://www.venturerider.org/forum/forum.php and was able to access directly into the site that way. I am using Windows 10, and Firefox Nightly 63.0a1 but have been using this browser for a long time with no issues in the past accessing the site. Just wanted to share what is occurring for me. If you need any testers, feel free to contact me. Rick F.

I am not sure it is published anywhere as to what the ratio is for the unit. There is the old tired and true method of marking it and spinning the wheel side and counting revolutions on the output side. But I agree with the others, get the bike running and stopping correctly and then pursue the change out of the speedometer. just my thoughts anyway.. Rick F.

I thought there was a schrader valve for the front forks also but I been mistaken before. I just rode about 350 miles on Saturday and had only 4lbs of air in the fronts with the progressives and 15W and the bike rode great.. handled all the bumps and holes with no issues and gave me a nice smooth ride. I like a little firmer ride and that is what I had. I had the rear shock at the medium auto setting which is 42 lbs I think.. Good luck on finding all of the stuff.. I know how it is when I save things for later use.. LOL Rick F.

You might be able to locate most of the items on Ebay if you really are after it.. Add some preload to the front springs and you should be ok.. Rick F.

I think that is just the marking on the diode, a zener diode to show what end is what. Here is a link to wikipedia about them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zener_diode Hope this helps. Rick F.

I honestly dont know.. do you have the schrader valve on the bike anywhere to add air manually to the system? If you did, then I would think you could add the components for the on board compressor. Rick F.

I have ran mine with no air and now with 4 lbs air in the front forks and I find I prefer the 4 lbs as it seems to handle better for me. I didnt put a lot of preload in the front forks with the progressive and I am sure that will make a big difference also. I been running the rear shock at the med level for my alone ride time and I did manage to find a shock with a progressive rear spring already installed on it. The key to finding one of those is to look for a red spring on the shock instead of a black one and that is a progressive rear spring. They are no longer available from progressive by the way. I just helped a buddy install a new set of progressive springs in his 89 VR and we didnt use the plastic spacers at all in his and he likes the ride. He had almost 30 years and 65K on the old springs and noticed a big difference with the 15W and 4 lbs of air. Your best bet is to see what you like the best when you are riding and go with that. Rick F.

I have the progressive front fork springs with 15W Bel-ray fork oil and I run about 3 -4 lbs of air and my antidives are unplugged but still attached to the forks. My future plans are to cap them off when I change out the fork oil the next time. Rick F.

I would recommending checking the coils and the TCI unit as they could be causing your issues. Rick F. -
Greasing rear wheel pins and splines
cimmer replied to frankd's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have attached an URL to the Yamaha part fiche to use to explain this, https://www.partshark.com/oemparts/a/yam/5107f83bf870022108d65785/rear-wheel What we are talking about with fingers is the pins (#9) on the diagram and the hub clutch (#8). By removing the circlip (#12) you can pull out the hub clutch and pins and grease the pins. These are what transfer the power to the rear wheel from the pumpkin assembly. It is also a good time to grease all the joints in the a-arm assembly also as they need grease, especially if you dont have grease zerks installed in them and if not, you can also install them yourself as I believe there is a article in the tech library on how to do that. Hope this helps.. Rick F. -
What is happening when you push the piston into their openings? I would remove the seals and make sure the piston fit into their openings in the calipers with no seals in place and then see how the seals fit on the pistons. When the seals are in their grove, are they smooth with the cylinder bore or do they protrude out of the grove a lot. Maybe get us some pictures to check it out. I had no issues when I rebuilt mine last year. Rick F.

I did the same on mine also to make the high beam indicator work. Swapped the bulbs in the dash, was too easy not too. Rick F. -
Air ride problems
cimmer replied to JimboSlice's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On the air suspension system, as stated above it is only adjustable in the acc postion with the key. The auto system just set the air to predetermined levels where the manual setting lets you adjust the air to any level you want. I would check the hose connections and the solenoids for leaks. Also the silica can be dried in an oven or microwave to dry it out and reuse it or you can buy a bottle of it and replace it that way also. I would pay attention to how the parts come out as if I recall the service manual shows a part that isnt in the 89 VR drier housing. On the drive shaft, there is no lube in the drive shaft itself but the differential does have lube that also lubricates the gear on the end of the shaft. The onle thing to make sure of is the joints in the rear suspension are lubed and moving freely. It is possible that someone has added grease zerks to the a-arms and then you can just grease them that way. The drive shaft can be removed from the u-joint at the rear of the engine and some lube applied to the spines and then grease the pivot bears for the swing arm. If you dont have a service manual yet, there is one that can be download from the tech section that will assist you in keeping your VR running great. Enjoy the ride.. Rick F. -
Brake seal direction
cimmer replied to dna9656's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I did have to clean out the grove they sit in with a pick to get all the crud out but they did slide in nice and tight. I applied the grease to them after I had them in place so the grease didnt apply any pressure to them when seating them in the grove. I had to run my fingers around the pressure seal to get it to seat properly. Hope that helps. Rick F. -
Brake seal direction
cimmer replied to dna9656's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Are you using any of the supplied red grease on the seal and piston when you go to install them? Also make sure you have the seal area nice and clean so the new seals fit completely in them. Are this the double piston 83-85 calipers or the 4 piston 86-93 calipers we are dealing with here? Rick F. -
Staor and/or rectifier question
cimmer replied to luvmy40's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
do all the above cleaning but if you have an unsealed battery, double check the fluid levels in the battery also. Rick F.
