  1. Check the connection for the temp sending unit to make sure it is connected, clean and tight. It is located on the right side of the engine, up front on the joint that has the two prong fan thermo switch. It is a single prong connection just behind the chrome guard cover. That is the first place I would be checking. Rick F.
  2. I ordered the wider and taller Clearview windshield for the Venture. I also had the vent installed in it and had a gray tinted to it and enjoy it very much. I do look thru the windshield but I dont find that an issue with it effecting my vision. The vent adds a lot of air flow when I am riding on hot days and it is adjustable to the amount of air flow. I am not sure if they are still offering the windshields for the 1st Gen Ventures still or not but it might be worth a call to them to see. If you like to see how it looks on the bike I would be happy to post a photo of it for you also. Good luck Rick F.
  3. I haven't de-linked my 89 brakes but I did rebuild all the master cylinders, calipers, clutch slave and also replaced all the rubber brake lines with steel braided hoses. I have no trouble locking up both wheels if I apply the brakes too fast and all at once. I personally think that replacing the old worn out rubber brake lines is one of the best improvements that can be made to the brake system. Before I replaced them, I could grab a brake line and apply the brakes and feel the hose expand in my hands. To me this translated to loose of braking pressure and volume to the calipers and attributed to less braking action. Just my 2 cents worth.. Rick F.
  4. The last set of pads I put in my bike were these EBC V-Pads. https://ebcbrakes.com/product/sintered-brake-pads/ Made for the heavy cruisers and touring bikes. I have been happy with them so far and they do a good job of stopping my bike. Hope this helps. Rick F.
  5. I looked around but couldnt find any torque specs for the caliper haves. Yamaha doesn't recommend splitting them so they don't list the spec for them. I just used my torque wrench and keep setting it higher and higher till I was able to break one loose. Not the most accurate way but it seemed to work okay as I have had no leakage out of them. Rick F.
  6. I might be a little late on this, but the throttle cable goes on the inside of the starter rod. If it is installed on the outside as shown in the picture, it will cause the throttle cable to hang up and not let the carbs return to idle. I had a buddy who had it on the outside and when we moved it to the proper inside position, then his throttle cable was easier to move and the bike would return to idle when released. Rick F.
  7. Part of it was trial and error.. I helped beta the Partscrafter kit with the guy that owns it and actually I prefer that kit as it gives you new o-rings for the caliper halves. They are not available from Yamaha as they dont want you separating the halves but I like to hone out the bores and make sure they are clean before reassembling them. Plus it is nice to order one item and have everything in one kit to rebuild the front calipers. Good luck Rick F.
  8. I misspoke.. you are correct it is the rear and left front.. Rick F.
  9. Here is what I used last year.. https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?130233-24mm-hex-bit-socket-for-fork-work Hope this helps. Rick F.
  10. I would also add in there, the correct tool to fit any fastening device that you might have changed out for a stock item. ie, replaced some Phillips head screws with allen headed bolts.. Also if on a long trip, a Clutch hand lever is nice, I had a buddy have an issue and dropped his VR and broke the chrome clutch lever off. He was unable to ride the bike even to get it up a hill to the trailer. I ended up removing my clutch lever and installing it on his bike just so we could move it under its own power. We played hell finding one but go lucky at a place that had a parts unlimited one we could cut to get it to fit for the rest of the week. Unfortunately I didn't get the part number off the package before we left so I could share it here.. Rick F.
  11. Here is a Yamaha tech bulletin on the subject of drive shaft maintenance. 1stGen_Final.pdf1stGen_Final.pdf I hope this helps out everyone. When I removed my drive shaft on my 89 VR the spines were very wet with gear oil. I ended up tearing up the seal on the drive shaft and had to replace it before reinstalling it. I dont have any plans to remove the drive shaft from the differential again but when I remove the rear wheel I do grease the spines at the U-joint connection. Rick F.
  12. Another thought is traditional construction with a log looking siding applied to the outside of the structure to make it appear to be a log home. Just a thought.. Good luck Casey... Rick F.
  13. Here is a place selling replacement slides http://www.newmotorcycleparts.net/fuel_system_parts/misc_carb_parts.html still not cheap but $85 a pop. And on ebay there are these.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-Carburetor-Slide-Piston-Valve-Rubber-Diaphragm-V-Max-VMax-Replacement/311897363295?fits=Make%3AYamaha&hash=item489e88135f%3Ag%3AqkAAAOSw7ZRZjcLz%3Asc%3AUSPSFirstClass%2155431%21US%21-1&_sacat=0&_nkw=yamaha+diaphragms&_from=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=m570.l1313 You can also get replace diaphragms from a few different sources too.. http://jbmindustries.com/Yamaha650.html https://www.siriusconinc.com/search_result.php?make=2&model=Venture%20Royale&part=All&partno=&x=56&y=16&search=search&start=25 The Sirius Consolidated Inc was offering the group a special price but I am not sure if that is still in effect and they have a lot of aftermarket replacement parts for the bikes. Good luck.. Rick F.
  14. Glad to hear things are working out for you. The front bulbs should be a 1157 so that would explain the running light but no turn signal function on that corner. Enjoy the ride. Rick F.
  15. I would think it would work ok but you are going to loose the low brake fluid indicator on the CMS panel. It is nothing for them a reservoir for the rear master cylinder. If you are concerned, you most likely could get one off of ebay or ask here and another member might have an extra one they would sell you. Rick F.
  16. In truth, most of the log homes are kits any way, built at the sellers site and then numbered, disassembled, and ship to the construction site. I remember driving south of Missoula, Mt once and seeing dozen of log home builders along the highway. Some using backhoes to move logs, other with multiple cranes to assist in the building. Be prepare for the cabin to settle a lot once it is assembled, so accommodations for that needs to be built into the doors, windows, cabinets, and just about anything hung to the outside walls. Log home are beautiful but there is still a lot of maintenance to them so that they last a long time. Good luck with your search. Rick F.
  17. What year Venture are we dealing with here? If you please add it to your profile then it will show up on all of your post below your name. Sounds like the CMS might be toast.. I would remove the solder connection you made and see if that made a difference in it operating. I am not sure what that plug could be used for. You should be able to figure it out with a service manual by looking it over for the wire color combo to a connector. The fan thermo switch is the flat blade connection on the hose joint. The pin like connector is for the temp gauge. And the wire with the pin connector is the ground for both of them. Hope this helps. Rick F.
  18. I dont think there is anything special about the copper brake hose washers and you most likely could get them from a local parts store. Take an old one with you to match it up and you should be set. Rick F.
  19. Do you have the hazard switch connected to its plug? If the hazard switch isnt connected the turn signals will not work. The front turn signals do operate as a running light also but the rears do not. On the Temp gauge, verify that the connection is there on the sending unit. It is located on the right side of the bike up by the right side radiator grill. It can easily come loose and not be noticed when working on the fairing. Are there any indication on the CMS, does it go thru the self test when starting the bike? The headlight issue, I would double check the wiring and see what is up. If you havent yet, there is a service manual located in the tech read me section of the library. Hope this helps. Rick F.
  20. My first car was a 70 Chevelle SS 396/350HP. Cranberry Red with a black vinyl top. Black interior, Muncie M21 4 speed and no power anything. I got that car when I was 18 and sold it about 9 years later. It need a lot of rust fixed and at that time there wasnt much available to fix it like there is now. Be nice to get a car like that back but I dont think I would keep it stock but make a restomod out of it. Rick F.
  21. They seem to be available new still.. https://superbrace.com/collections/yamaha/products/1100-yamaha-venture-royale?variant=13481539334 You might also look on ebay for a used one. Rick F.
  22. Don, I was able to get in with just doing a manual entry on the address line with just http://www.venturerider.org and it directed me to the login in page. I would say you have it fixed. I was able to access the site after the change to the https so was surprised with it gave me the directory listings instead. Thanks for all that you do here Don.. Rick F.
  23. Don, I have issues getting in with the https://www.venturerider.org as it would show me the listing for the directories for the appilication. I was able to pick out the forum directory and was then given the forum page and login. I tried it a couple of times and received the same directory listing. I did change the bookmark of URL to this, https://www.venturerider.org/forum/forum.php and was able to access directly into the site that way. I am using Windows 10, and Firefox Nightly 63.0a1 but have been using this browser for a long time with no issues in the past accessing the site. Just wanted to share what is occurring for me. If you need any testers, feel free to contact me. Rick F.
  24. I am not sure it is published anywhere as to what the ratio is for the unit. There is the old tired and true method of marking it and spinning the wheel side and counting revolutions on the output side. But I agree with the others, get the bike running and stopping correctly and then pursue the change out of the speedometer. just my thoughts anyway.. Rick F.
  25. I thought there was a schrader valve for the front forks also but I been mistaken before. I just rode about 350 miles on Saturday and had only 4lbs of air in the fronts with the progressives and 15W and the bike rode great.. handled all the bumps and holes with no issues and gave me a nice smooth ride. I like a little firmer ride and that is what I had. I had the rear shock at the medium auto setting which is 42 lbs I think.. Good luck on finding all of the stuff.. I know how it is when I save things for later use.. LOL Rick F.
