Well at a minimum I’m sure glad you’re fixed and healthy enough to type the tale. I hit a bird with my Wrangler probably 18 years ago I saw it coming and distinctly remember it’s wing stretched across the windshield. I was shocked and felt bad but was thankful no damage and I think the bird flew off.

Ok @cowpuc @skydoc_17 I’m really getting frustrated not knowing how to navigate this new GPS. It isn’t letting me see the data like it’s displayed BEFORE you save it, once it’s saved it converts to a .GPX file that I can’t figure out how to open. I think I need to get on my laptop rather than my phone. Anyway eventually I found a screen that kinda sorta shows the data I want to see, but can’t export it so I took a pic. I’m thinking “Total average speed” includes stopped time at red lights and whatnot.

First let me clarify I work full time on an AFB and support a number of other bases, but I am just a contractor supporting the real warfighters, so the praise belongs to them. That @cowpuc is an F-35A being piloted by Major Wolfe. https://www.388fw.acc.af.mil/About-Us/Biographies/Article/2098569/major-kristin-beo-wolfe/

@skydoc_17 @cowpuc I’m working on getting you that info…not too long into the ride I remembered to turn in the tracks mode on my new Garmin. Now getting that data to transfer to another devise and make sense is another learning curve. I will say 90+ % of the ride was backroad mountain vista but still 4th and 5th gear. Interesting thought though today on slow speed vs high…on the ground that makes sense but in the air I’m thinking slow speed is burning waaaaayyyy more fuel. From my Bases air show today. @cowpuc America being America at its finest! 3 year olds riding in bombs around an Air Force Base. And also yes that is a sniper / sharpshooter on the rooftop. One of many posted for the event. God bless America and her Allies.

Glad to hear it’s working out. About 20 years ago I got into an accident with my Audi when someone pulled out in front of me. After correcting the insurance company multiple times about the actual model A4S and them finally agreeing that it wasn’t an A4, the value went up and they didn’t want to total it. I sure didn’t want it back given the amount of damage. They said that I can have it repaired at a shop of my choice, so I told them to send it back to Germany so Audi can fix it. They didn’t see that on coming and decided to total it. Made a few bucks off of it. And salt in the wound that still stings is I had put a full tank in just the night before.

Sorry don’t want to beat a dead horse but also if you’re still rocking the glass buss fuses like myself and many others it may not be blown but just a shoddy corroded connection. If all that checks out ok let us know and we’ll help follow the next path.
-
I’m going on pure memory here but I think the hazard is a separate fuse which would still actuate the flasher. Check fuses maybe

Have you checked the above folder for your appropriate schematic? I posted the whole thread not knowing exact model you’d need. These are very helpful to print out 11x17 or larger and laminate for your bike.

Cool experiment. Proves what I knew about ethanol all along…it’s a scam! I switched to non ethanol for all my small engines along with my F150 and Duc years ago. So many headaches eliminated since then.

I have a utility cap on my truck so never had the hard cover personally. But last week at work we needed to move some chairs and had two pickups with the hard covers (sorry I don’t know brands of covers). The dodge cover didn’t work so well as it didn’t flip all the way open, I want to say it had three sections but the section nearest the cab didn’t flip up, rendering a third of the bed useless. The Chevy did fully open and had prop rods to keep the cover up against the back window.

Weight distribution…I’ve stumbled upon the obvious.

My rear shock leaks like a clogged sieve the PO apparently attempted to re-solder the CLASS board but failed. They ended up cutting the lines and installing schrader valves. Lucky for me they left all the original parts I fixed the board and rebuilt the pump / manifold and everything works. BUT in the era of early COVID tapping back into the original air lines proved difficult. I did my best but not good enough and haven’t gotten the motivation to re-address -
So many of you probably know I’ve been complaining about the lean angle of the beast when on its side stand. I’ve messed with the kickstand and did some adjustments with little results. Well, the other day I stopped at the auto store on my way home from work to pick up some brake pads for the cage and they had a promo that if I bought rotors too I’d get %20 off even if I return the rotors. So being thrifty I took the bait. Anyway when I got home I got off the bike and it was pleasantly not leaning too far at all. Knowing I put the front rotors in the right saddle bag I figured I was onto something…sure enough when I took them out the lean came back. So out of convenience I keep my tool bag and emergency supplies in the left side probably further exaggerating the lean. I’ll be moving that to the right.

Congrats to you! I have seen first hand how hard it is. I’ve been blessed with the love of smoking and the ability to take it or leave it.

@Leland That rig is impeccably clean! Nice job with the Jerry can too.

Yes @cowpuc I do know what you mean! I’m born and raised just outside of Philly but moved here in 2014. I’m about 30-40 min north of Salt Lake City next to Hill AFB. Even in my well developed neighborhood we have kids riding the main streets on quads and dirt bikes as you describe in Salina! The salt lake valley isn’t all that big and once you get out of it and off the super slab, gas stations can be few and far…that said even IF there is a station you need to factor in if they are open. After 6pm or on a Sunday and you’ll be camping out or pushing…or begging because the owner lives within earshot of his station. It is a different culture and way of life out here, as you say for the risk takers / adventure seekers. On the flat screens at the gas pumps or over the slurpee machine in town they’re advertising extreme sports like dirt biking, hang gliding, jet packing…red bull kinda stuff as if that’s what you’re off to do once you fill up…and many are! if you stick to the beaten path gas availability is a slim issue, but start connecting those backroads and you can quickly be SOL. On a side note, living out here I’ve learned it isn’t the thermometer reading that’s dangerous as much as the intensity of the sun. For that reason I’ve added a compact umbrella to every vehicles emergency kit. Until you’ve experienced it it’s hard to explain how difficult something as simple as swapping a fuse is when you’re dripping a pint of sweat onto the project at hand.

Thanks all. I don’t plan on carrying a can for the daily, it’s more of an idea for trips. I live in Utah so “out west” as most of you have mentioned is my back yard. I remember @cowpuc mentioning the empty oil cans in old socks under the luggage rack. Many people carry cans exposed to the elements on trailer tongues or racks especially landscapers, jet ski, and snowmobile out here. When we take the mini bike out to the desert I carry the bike and fuel on the hitch carrier.

Ouch! Good everyone is ok.

I’ve posted before about carrying extra gas and there are some other threads that are a decade old so I figured I’d start another one with my specific question. When I bought the 87 in 2019 I tore into it immediately and addressed lots of minor issues (it ran when I bought it and even test rode it) in that process I took off the markland hitch. Recently I put the hitch back on mainly because 1. Why not 2. I was tired of moving it around the garage knowing sooner or later I’d loose a piece of it. Anyway to my point, while cleaning my garage I came across some unused small gas cans and I thought this could be perfect to strap to the hitch! I’ve got a 2gal, 1 1/4gal, and 1gal. Thoughts? All containers are in good condition, just dirty.

Hmmm. Well it is a big white connector that goes to the class. Would normally hang out by the coolant tank, unfortunately I haven’t followed it further back.
